What is BOSIET?
The Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) is an OPITO-approved course for personnel new to (or returning to) the offshore oil & gas industry. It covers safety induction, helicopter underwater escape (HUET), sea survival, first aid and fire fighting — preparing delegates to travel to and work safely on offshore installations.
What is T-BOSIET?
T-BOSIET is the Tropical version of BOSIET, designed for personnel working in warm-water regions such as the Middle East, South-East Asia and India. The skills are identical to BOSIET, but the sea survival and escape exercises are conducted without an immersion (survival) suit, reflecting tropical operating conditions.
Key Differences
The core difference is the operating environment. BOSIET assumes cold-water conditions and uses an immersion suit; T-BOSIET is delivered for tropical waters without one. Both are OPITO-approved, both include HUET with an Emergency Breathing System (EBS), and both carry the same global recognition.
Eligibility Criteria
Neither course requires prior offshore experience. Delegates should be medically fit to take part in the practical water-based and fire-fighting exercises. If your previous offshore certificate is still valid, you may only need the refresher (FOET / T-FOET) instead.
Course Duration
BOSIET is typically delivered over 3 days (around 21 guided learning hours) and T-BOSIET over a similar 3-day schedule (around 19 guided learning hours). Digital-delivery options complete the theory online followed by a 1-day practical.
Certification Validity
Both BOSIET and T-BOSIET certificates are valid for 4 years. Before they expire you renew with the matching refresher — FOET for BOSIET and T-FOET for T-BOSIET — within the 4-year window.
Career Opportunities After Certification
BOSIET / T-BOSIET is the entry ticket to most offshore oil & gas roles — roustabouts, technicians, electricians, engineers, medics and project staff. Operators worldwide require a valid certificate before allowing personnel to travel offshore by helicopter.
