Inspection and integrity engineers who visit offshore facilities
Their trips are scheduled around shutdown windows, so they fly out and back and rarely need the induction content of a three-day course.
Saudi Aramco's aviation arm, now called Aloula Aviation, is headquartered in Dammam. Aramco's own history of the unit says it began in 1934, built a maintenance hangar at Dhahran Airport in 1980 and today flies a fleet of more than 60 aircraft. Leonardo's 2024 service-centre announcement gives the helicopter side as 27 Leonardo units, mainly AW139 models, flown on offshore transport missions for the oil and gas industry, with maintenance hangars at Dammam, Ras Tanura and Tanajib.
Aramco writes that helicopters came into offshore work in the 1970s and 1980s because boats were slow and sometimes impractical in rough seas, and that its aviation arm now serves more than 300 helipads onshore and offshore. The aircraft still do the quick trips: a half-day inspection, a specialist callout, a manager's field visit. We found no public source that says where Khobar-based passengers board, so your own mobilisation letter is the document to follow.
The decision for a Khobar resident is rarely whether to be trained. It is which training. If you live on a rig or accommodation platform, you will sit the full induction anyway. If you go out and come back the same day, a course that teaches only helicopter travel and escape is shorter, cheaper and easier to fit around an office job. Whether the client treats that as sufficient is its call, and we found no public Aramco document that names T-HUET as a general rule. Get the sentence in writing from the project or vendor-management team that books your seat.
One practical point is specific to this coast. Climate sites list the average sea temperature off Khobar at roughly 19 degrees Celsius in February and 33 degrees in August. Warm in summer, then, but not tropical in winter. OPITO's T-HUET page speaks of a tropical environment without defining it, so a client may name the standard HUET with an emergency breathing system instead. Ask which one is meant before you buy a certificate for your own file.
Aramco subsidiary, headquartered in Dammam; Aramco says it serves more than 300 helipads onshore and offshore.
Built in 1980, according to Aramco's history of its aviation unit.
Leonardo lists 27 of its helicopters, mainly AW139 models, in the operator's fleet, used mainly for offshore transport.
Their trips are scheduled around shutdown windows, so they fly out and back and rarely need the induction content of a three-day course.
Khobar's office district houses firms that survey vessels, platforms and equipment for several clients, each with its own passenger rule.
A callout may mean a morning flight and an evening return, and the helicopter operator wants the escape skill on the passenger list.
A boat-based job can still include one helicopter transfer a year, and a lapsed escape certificate is easy to overlook in the matrix.
OPITO describes T-HUET for people new to or returning to the energy industry who will travel by helicopter in a tropical environment.
Begin with what you hold. A valid T-BOSIET or T-FOET already contains tropical helicopter escape, so T-HUET would repeat it. If you have no offshore certificate and the contract wants the full induction, take the three-day T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501, ₹35,000). If your only need is to be a helicopter passenger and the client says so in writing, T-HUET is the efficient choice. If the wording names the standard version, or your trips could include cooler months in the northern Gulf, ask about HUET with EBS (OPITO 5095), also one day at ₹25,000.
You will live offshore, or the contract lists induction, first aid and fire fighting as well as helicopter escape.
The client names the standard HUET with an emergency breathing system, or winter water temperatures worry the procedure owner.
You already hold an in-date T-BOSIET or T-FOET and are close to the four-year mark.
A briefing leads into practical work in an indoor pool, where a Modular Egress Training Simulator stands in for the cabin. OPITO sets 8 hours 20 minutes of guided learning and two mandatory units, and every exercise is assessed as you go.
Wearing and inflating the life jacket and following the crew's emergency calls.
Leaving the aircraft in a controlled emergency on dry land, then in a water ditching.
Getting out of a partly submerged or capsized cabin, using the push-out window.
Boarding an aviation life raft, keeping it serviceable and supporting other survivors.
Using the spray visor and managing equipment before, during and after a ditching.
Many companies that supply offshore clients are managed from Khobar, while their engineers are on the road. The planning job is to separate people who need a full induction from people who only ride in the cabin.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) | The usual ask for a person who only rides as a passenger. Get the wording before you pay for the whole team. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Named when the person stays on an installation, or when the contract lists survival, fire and first aid as well. |
| Helicopter Underwater Escape Training with EBS (HUET with EBS) | The standard variant for operators whose procedures are written around it. |
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | A renewal option for T-BOSIET holders. It is not an alternative for a first-time passenger. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Most people drive to King Fahd International Airport at Dammam and fly to Cochin International Airport (COK). The campus is on Vypin island, about 40 km from COK by road and about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction over the Goshree bridges.
About 50 km by road. Add time for check-in and for the traffic on the Dammam side.
Comparison sites list direct services of about five hours, typically on Indian low-cost and full-service carriers. Timetables change by season.
An option if the King Fahd Causeway suits your travel documents. Check Bahrain's entry rules for your nationality and your Saudi exit and re-entry permission first.
Pre-book a taxi to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal. The ride takes about an hour, depending on traffic over the bridges.
A one-day course is easy to attach to a family trip to Kerala. Put it at the start of the visit, so that a repeated exercise cannot eat into the return flight.
A visa is not needed for Indian passport holders. Other nationalities should look up the e-Visa categories on the government portal, since the visa office alone decides what suits a one-day safety course. Before booking, check on Absher or with your employer that your iqama and exit and re-entry permission run past your return date.
Fees are in rupees for each person. Ask our team about the payment route from Saudi Arabia before you transfer, and keep the receipt for any company claim.
Ask your client or vendor-management contact whether the passenger rule is T-HUET, HUET with EBS or T-BOSIET, and note any expiry date you already hold.
Choose one of OPITO's five routes and keep the paper handy, or ask us for the centre's screening form.
Write to info@imostacademy.in or message +91 8075 787307 with the days you can spare, and ask for open dates before buying tickets.
Drive to Dammam, take the flight to Kochi, then a taxi to your stay near Vypin. The clock moves 2 h 30 min ahead, so treat the evening as a rest period.
Briefing, then life jacket, evacuation, underwater escape and raft drills. Expect a full day, as OPITO allows more than eight hours of guided learning.
Leave the next morning to keep a margin for any repeat exercise. Send the certificate to your office and put the fourth anniversary in the matrix.
