Hook-up and commissioning technicians mobilised for a Gulf platform programme
Their first card was issued for a project that is now winding down, and the next project will check the date on day one.
Saudi Aramco's offshore expansion has kept contractors busy in the northern Gulf for several years. Industry coverage of the Marjan and Berri programme, announced in 2017, lists 24 oil, water and gas-injection platforms, 200 km of cables and a new offshore gas-oil separation plant for Marjan alone, with commissioning scheduled for 2025. The same coverage names tie-in platforms, wellhead platforms and pipelines awarded across a long list of EPC contractors
That history matters to a refresher page for a simple reason. If you mobilised for hook-up or commissioning in 2022 or 2023 and took a survival course for it, the four years run out between now and 2027. The people most at risk are mid-career technicians, inspectors and vessel staff who were given a card by a project and then forgot it. A card that has lapsed generally sends you back to the three-day course, so the cost of missing the date is two extra days and ₹10,000.
The other Khobar peculiarity is that crew arrive here with mixed paperwork. People arrive in a Khobar contractor's team with paperwork from different previous employers, and each employer chose its own version. OPITO's entry rule for T-FOET is wider than most people expect: it lists BOSIET, BOSIET with compressed-air EBS, T-BOSIET, FOET, FOET with compressed-air EBS and T-FOET as qualifying certificates, provided they are valid and in date. Whether your client then treats a tropical refresher as meeting a clause written around the standard BOSIET is a separate question, and the contract has the answer.
We found no public Aramco document that names T-FOET for contractor staff, so we cannot tell you how a given mobilisation desk will treat the card. The safe sequence is to read your own client wording, check the date on your current certificate, and only then fix the leave. Renewing inside the last three months before expiry also keeps your original end date, so a booking made too early wastes validity.
Announced in 2017: 24 platforms, 200 km of cables and a new offshore gas-oil separation plant, with commissioning scheduled for 2025.
Combined with Marjan as an $18bn Aramco programme to raise crude capacity by about 550,000 barrels a day.
Seven guided learning hours, three mandatory units and a four-year certificate; entry needs an in-date BOSIET or FOET-family certificate.
Their first card was issued for a project that is now winding down, and the next project will check the date on day one.
They fly or sail only a few times a year, so the card is the one document that quietly expires between trips.
Their seafarer certificates are tracked by the ship manager, but the offshore survival card often sits in a different file.
A BOSIET issued by a previous employer may still be valid and qualify for the refresher, but the new client's wording decides which version is accepted.
Read the front of your card first. T-FOET renews the tropical line and is open to anyone holding an in-date BOSIET or FOET-family certificate, the standard ones included. FOET with EBS (OPITO 5858) is the standard-version refresher, also one day at ₹25,000, and it is the one to ask about if your client's paperwork says BOSIET rather than T-BOSIET. If the old certificate has lapsed, OPITO's entry rule is not met and you should plan for the full T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501), which is three days at ₹35,000. Anyone moving from a tropical to a standard certificate should ask about OPITO's bridging product (5704) before assuming either route works.
Your client's wording names the standard BOSIET or FOET with an emergency breathing system.
Your certificate has already expired, or you have never held one.
You only fly as a passenger, hold no in-date certificate, and the client accepts helicopter escape alone.
Teaching mixes short classroom refreshers with practical work: helicopter escape and sea survival in an indoor pool with a simulator, and fire exercises on a dedicated fire ground. OPITO requires every exercise to be judged against the standard as it happens.
Ditching procedures, the brace position and getting out of a capsized, submerged cabin. After four years the sequence has usually blurred, so expect to repeat it from the beginning.
Lifejackets, staying together and boarding a raft in warm water. In warm water the hazard is heat stress rather than cold shock, and the course covers it.
Responding to a fire with portable equipment and finding your way out when smoke removes your view. It maps to accommodation blocks, switch rooms and process decks on a Gulf platform complex.
Immediate care for injuries and medical emergencies until help arrives, which can take longer offshore than at a plant gate.
The companies that buy this course in Khobar are usually managing a campaign, with a list of names, a date by which each person must be mobilised and a spread of different certificates. The job is to sort the list, book the renewals together and avoid pulling someone off the rota at the last minute.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | Book while the T-BOSIET or earlier T-FOET is still in date, and keep the written client wording on file. |
| Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS (FOET with EBS) | The standard-version refresher, for contracts that name the standard BOSIET or FOET. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | The fallback if a card has already lapsed, and the usual first course for new starters. |
| Basic H2S Training | Has its own two-year cycle, so check its date separately when you list renewals. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
You drive to Dammam's King Fahd International Airport and fly to Cochin International Airport (COK). From there the campus on Vypin island is about 40 km by road, or about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction over the Goshree bridges.
Roughly 50 km by road. Leave early enough for check-in.
Flight-comparison sites list direct services of about five hours. Frequencies vary by season, so confirm with the airline before you plan around a particular day.
A second option across the causeway. Check Bahrain's entry rules for your nationality and your Saudi exit and re-entry permission before choosing it.
Pre-book a taxi to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal. Allow an hour or a little more.
Pick the first days of your break rather than the last, so a repeated exercise never cuts into your return flight.
Indian passport holders enter India without a visa. Holders of other passports should read the e-Visa categories on the government portal before paying for tickets, since the visa office decides which one fits a one-day course. Confirm your iqama and exit and re-entry permission with your employer or on Absher as well.
Fees are quoted in Indian rupees for each delegate. Ask our team how to pay from Saudi Arabia before you send money, and keep the receipt for your employer's claim.
Note its type and expiry date. If it ends within three months, book now. If it ends later, waiting keeps more validity.
Ask whether a T-FOET certificate meets the survival clause in your contract, and keep the reply in writing.
Email info@imostacademy.in or message +91 8075 787307 with your certificate details and your window. Ask for current dates before buying tickets.
Drive to Dammam, fly to Kochi and take a taxi to your stay near Vypin. The clock moves 2 h 30 min ahead of Saudi time.
The pool and simulator work, the fire ground and first aid, all in a single day. Carry your old certificate for the entry check.
Return the next morning, send the new certificate to your office and move the next expiry into the matrix.
