Technicians and operators who took T-BOSIET for a rig or platform contract
Four years pass quickly between contracts. Renewing at home leave avoids a delay to the next mobilisation.
Start with an honest look at the district. Salem is a steel and manufacturing centre. The Salem Steel Plant, a SAIL unit on the national highway at the foot of Kanjamalai, makes hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel, with a stated slab capacity of 180,000 tonnes a year and about 1,357 employees. Mettur, roughly an hour and a half away by road, has a thermal power station, chemical works and an aluminium plant. None of this takes place offshore, so demand for a helicopter escape refresher in Salem is small and we say so. The people who need it are those whose work took them elsewhere, to a vessel, a platform or a Gulf project, and who come home between contracts.
For them the arithmetic is simple. A T-BOSIET or earlier T-FOET lasts four years. T-FOET costs ₹25,000 and takes one day, while a fresh T-BOSIET costs ₹35,000 and takes three. The difference is ₹10,000 and two more days away, and for someone travelling from Salem it also means extra nights near the campus. Letting the certificate lapse is therefore the expensive mistake, and a note of the expiry date in your phone is the cheapest fix.
The entry rule is OPITO's, and a centre has to produce evidence of it if OPITO asks. The learner must hold a valid, in-date OPITO-approved BOSIET, BOSIET with CA-EBS, T-BOSIET, FOET, FOET with CA-EBS or T-FOET. Our own course page asks for a valid T-BOSIET or T-FOET, so if you hold one of the others, write to us before you book. Bring the original certificate on the day. If the old certificate expires within three months before you enrol, OPITO says the new one should run on from the old expiry date unless your operator specifies otherwise, which means a booking inside that window loses nothing.
Medical fitness comes before the pool. OPITO accepts any one of five proofs: a current offshore medical, an employer-approved equivalent, a valid certificate of fitness to work at sea, a valid fitness-for-diving certificate, or a screening form that the centre supplies. A Salem worker who renewed an offshore medical for a recent contract can usually use that, and the form is the fallback. You and your employer remain responsible for declaring anything relevant.

Seven guided learning hours, valid four years, open only to holders of an in-date BOSIET or FOET-family certificate.

Crew managers track survival certificates beside seafarer papers, and an expiry can fall while the ship is far away.
A project may end, but if the next one needs the certificate, a renewal inside the window keeps it unbroken.
Visitors to offshore sites need the same certificate as crew, so a lapse blocks even a single trip.
They hold the expiry list and can group Salem and Erode renewals into one batch on one train.
Match the refresher to the certificate you hold and to the version your employer names. T-FOET refreshes the tropical certificate. FOET with EBS refreshes the standard version for employers who require it, and it also takes one day. If your certificate has expired, you do not meet the entry rule and the full T-BOSIET is normally the way back; confirm with our team and your employer before travelling. If you need only the helicopter escape exercise and your employer says so, T-HUET is a separate one-day course, though T-FOET already includes helicopter escape. The client's wording always comes first.
Your employer wants the standard refresher, for example because crew may move to colder-water or international assets. One day, ₹25,000.
Your certificate has already expired or you are new to offshore work. Three days, ₹35,000, OPITO 5501.
Your contract asks only for helicopter underwater escape. One day, ₹25,000.
Classroom briefings are short because you have done the course before. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in a controlled indoor pool using a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire exercises run on a dedicated fire ground. OPITO-approved instructors assess every exercise against the OPITO standard.
Emergency ditching situations and the escape techniques from a capsized, submerged helicopter. After four years the order of moves is rarely automatic, so the instructors walk it through again before you attempt it.
Staying afloat and working with others in warm water, with lifejackets and rafts. This is the part that suits people who spent their last contract on deck or in a control room rather than in the water.
Offshore fire response, using the equipment and getting out of a space with poor visibility. Workers from steel and chemical plants will find the extinguishers familiar and the escape pattern different.
Immediate care for injuries and medical emergencies, brought up to the current standard. If your job gives you a nominated first-aider role, this is the refresher that matters most.
Refreshers are bought by HSE and training coordinators, offshore and marine contractors that employ Tamil Nadu crew, and agencies that watch expiry dates. The task is calendar management: knowing which names expire in the next quarter and which of them live on the Chennai to Kochi line.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | The tropical refresher, to be taken while the earlier certificate is still in date. |
| Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS (FOET with EBS) | The refresher for the standard version, for contracts that name it. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | The route back in for anyone whose earlier certificate has already expired. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Salem is about 368 km from Ernakulam Junction by rail. The Chennai to Alleppey train reaches Salem after midnight and Kochi in the morning, and its return working leaves Ernakulam in the afternoon. By road it is about 330 km on NH 544 to Kochi city.
A third-party timetable lists it at Salem Junction at 01:25 and Ernakulam Junction at 08:40, daily. You board in the small hours of the day before the course, so you can sleep on the train and rest in Kochi.
The same source lists the Alleppey to Chennai train leaving Ernakulam Junction at 16:27 and reaching Salem at 00:02. Book it only after we confirm that your course day will finish in time.
The highway table puts Edapally in Kochi at 328 km from Salem. It is a long drive that passes Coimbatore and Palakkad, so treat it as a group option and allow for night traffic.
Note the type and expiry. If it expires within three months of the course, book now; if it is further off, wait so that you do not give up unused validity.
WhatsApp +91 8075 787307 or write to info@imostacademy.in with the certificate type and expiry, and ask for batch dates.
Take 22639 after midnight from Salem, arrive at 08:40 and rest. Ask our team for places to stay close to Njarakkal.
Bring swimwear, a towel, photo ID, your original certificate and your medical proof, and declare any medication. Expect pool, fire ground and first aid in one day.
Use 22640 only if the finish time allows, otherwise travel the next day. Scan the new certificate and diarise the four-year expiry.
