Contractor staff visiting or working on the PY-1 platform
Anyone flown or ferried to a platform in Indian waters needs the induction their employer names, and in tropical water that is often the tropical version.
The basin that runs from Puducherry down towards Ramnad is a gas basin, and its oil and gas organisation is run from Karaikal. ONGC's Cauvery Asset is based there, and its published plans centre on the Ramnad, Periakudi and Bhuvanagiri fields, which are onshore. For most staff on those fields an offshore survival certificate is not part of the job. It becomes relevant for the people who are sent to an offshore installation, who move to a vessel, or who change employers.
The offshore end of the basin is the PY-1 gas field, about 18 km from land off the Puducherry coast. Its operator, Hindustan Oil Exploration Company, holds the block outright and reported in 2022 that the production sharing contract had been extended by ten years from October of that year. A 2026 market report mentions plans for four more development wells in the field, subject to gas sales agreements. Platform crews and the contractors who visit them are in tropical waters by definition, which is the setting T-BOSIET was designed for.
Karaikal Port is the other local employer with a maritime flavour. Adani Ports took it over in April 2023, and the port handles cement, fertiliser, limestone, steel and liquids across five operating berths, with plans to add a container terminal. Port and terminal staff do not need an offshore certificate for dockside work. Those who might be seconded to a vessel, an offshore support contract or another site will want to know the requirement before the call comes. Coverage of the takeover also mentioned a planned Chennai Petroleum refinery at Nagapattinam, nearby. That is a long project, so do not buy a course in anticipation of it.
None of this is a promise of work. It is the reason a Puducherry or Karaikal applicant, asked for a tropical offshore induction, will not be surprised.
About 18 km off the Puducherry coast, operated by Hindustan Oil Exploration Company; the licence was extended by ten years in 2022.
Regional base for the Cauvery basin; its development plans named Ramnad, Periakudi and Bhuvanagiri, all onshore fields.
Five operating berths, about 10 million tonnes of cargo in FY2023, and a new owner since April 2023.
Train 16187 runs the corridor between Karaikal and Kerala daily, about 593 km.
Anyone flown or ferried to a platform in Indian waters needs the induction their employer names, and in tropical water that is often the tropical version.
A fitter or instrument technician on a Cauvery onshore field has no need for the certificate until a posting changes. Buying it before the move avoids a delayed mobilisation.
Only those who could be posted to vessels or offshore sites, such as pilots' assistants, surveyors or tug and workboat crew, would typically be asked.
A first offshore application is easier when the induction is already on the CV. Check the employer's requirement before you book.
Crew with sea sense who want a recognised survival qualification when applying for support-vessel roles.
The Cauvery basin, the KG basin to the north and the Indian west-coast fields all lie in warm water, and many operators and contractors working there ask for the tropical certificate. A few employers, especially those with international rotations, ask for the standard BOSIET with EBS. The only reliable answer is in the contract. If you cannot take three days away from work, the digital route does the theory online and leaves one practical day in Kochi, which suits the long journey from Karaikal.
The employer or contract names BOSIET, or deployment could include non-tropical regions.
You want to study the theory online and spend one day, rather than three, at the campus. Same ₹35,000, same four-year validity.
You work around gas production and the employer asks for hydrogen sulphide awareness. It is a half-day course at ₹12,500 with two years' validity.
The four parts of the course are the same everywhere. What changes is what they mean to a person who might end up on a gas platform off the Coromandel coast or a support vessel out of Karaikal.
Offshore hazards, regulations and management systems, and your responsibilities on an installation. Useful if your experience is onshore gas processing and you have not worked within a permit system at sea.
Brace positions, emergency procedures and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter, practised in an indoor pool. Most platform crew change by helicopter or by vessel, so you learn the helicopter side before you need it.
Tropical survival techniques, lifejackets, life rafts and the effects of heat on the body, plus basic first aid. For Karaikal and Puducherry crews used to boats, the new part is the structured sequence for survival after abandonment.
Portable extinguishers on a fire ground and escape from smoke. People who handle gas at a Cauvery wellsite will recognise the hazard; the course shows how the response differs offshore.
Training here is bought by oilfield and platform contractors, port and terminal operators, marine service firms and recruiters. Staff often work in shifts and are scattered between Karaikal, Puducherry and other Tamil Nadu sites, so a group booking should be planned around rosters.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly asked of offshore personnel in warm Indian waters. The client contract decides. |

| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) | A way to reduce days off site, with one practical day in Kochi. |
| Basic H2S Training | Often added for staff around gas production; confirm with the client. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
The two parts of the territory have different best routes. Karaikal has a direct overnight train. Puducherry city is roughly 150 km from Chennai, which is the usual way out, or 38 km from Villupuram Junction for an onward train.
Leaves Karaikal at 16:30, calls at Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli, then Karur, Erode, Coimbatore and Palakkad, and arrives at Ernakulam Junction at 06:45, a journey of about 14 hours. The return, 16188, leaves Ernakulam at 22:25. Listings are unofficial, so confirm on the railway enquiry service.
Puducherry to Chennai is roughly 145 to 165 km by the East Coast Road or a train to Chennai Egmore of about three and a half hours. From Chennai there are direct flights to Cochin of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Puducherry's own airport has IndiGo flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, but a Kochi trip by air needs a connection.
Train 16855 leaves Puducherry at about 16:35 by way of Salem, Erode, Coimbatore and Palakkad and continues to Shoranur. You would change there for Ernakulam. It runs weekly, and sources disagree about the day, so check before you rely on it.
About 575 km from Puducherry to Kochi, a long day for a group sharing a vehicle. From Karaikal the train covers 593 km.
Get the certificate name from the employer, check your photo ID and decide whether you can take three days or prefer the digital route. Ask our team for the next suitable batch.
From Karaikal, take 16187 at 16:30 and arrive at 06:45 the next day. From Puducherry city, go via Chennai and fly or take a night train. Plan to arrive the day before if you want to rest.
Classroom induction, pool exercises for helicopter escape and sea survival, and the fire ground. Bring swimwear and a towel, wear comfortable clothing and declare any medication.
Ask for the day-three finish time. If it allows, 16188 leaves Ernakulam at 22:25 for Karaikal; otherwise stay another night.
Scan the certificate and share a copy with the employer or contractor. Set a reminder four years ahead.
