Why a city with no offshore industry asks for the standard version
Be clear about the starting point. Madurai is an inland city of temples, markets, colleges and small industry, and none of that needs a helicopter escape certificate. The people who write to us are heading out of the city. Tamil Nadu has a large overseas workforce: a state migration survey reported in 2015 estimated about 2.2 million emigrants from the state, roughly 3 per cent of its population, with the Gulf states taking more than half. We found no district-level figure for Madurai, so we do not quote one. What the state-level picture does tell you is that a technician from this part of the state is as likely to be sent to a Gulf yard or an international project as to Mumbai or the east coast.
That is why the standard BOSIET matters here more than it does in a coastal city. The tropical T-BOSIET is built for warm-water regions, and our pages for Chennai and Tirunelveli explain it. BOSIET with EBS is the standard version, and its helicopter module includes breathing-system practice with the emergency breathing system. Many operators and contractors working outside Indian waters, or on assets where colder water is possible, name it in the contract. If your offer letter says BOSIET, the tropical certificate may not be accepted; if it says T-BOSIET, this one may not be either. The contract decides, and a recruiter's message should be asked for in writing.
The second group is the city's students and graduates. A marine engineering institute affiliated to the Indian Maritime University is listed in Madurai, and the city has many engineering colleges that turn out mechanical, electrical and instrumentation graduates. Those graduates look at offshore support, fabrication and commissioning roles, and a job advertisement for those roles almost always lists a valid offshore survival certificate. Buying the course before an offer is a judgement call, and the section on choosing a version below is meant to make it a better-informed one.
Distance is the practical point. Kochi is a long journey from Madurai but a direct one: two daily trains run through to Ernakulam without a change, and a hill road crosses the Ghats by Theni and Munnar. For a candidate in Madurai the trip to Kochi is therefore a night in a berth, not a flight and a connection.

BOSIET with EBS or T-BOSIET: a rule for people without an employer
If the employer names a version, book that version and nothing else. If nobody has named one yet, ask three questions: where is the work, who is the client, and could you be moved to another asset? Work for Indian-waters operators or contractors in warm regions more often asks for the tropical certificate. Work for international operators, or work where a move to colder water is possible, more often asks for the standard version. Both cost ₹35,000, take three days and stay valid for four years. How risk is managed offshore, which safety rules apply and how incidents are reported. For a graduate coming from a factory or a college workshop, this is the part that explains how a platform or vessel manages risk differently.

Firefighting and self-rescue
Using handheld extinguishers and getting out of a smoke-filled space, practised on a fire ground. Anyone who has done plant fire training will find the equipment familiar and the escape routes new.

Sea survival
Wearing a lifejacket, getting into a survival craft and staying alive in the water. Madurai is inland, so many candidates have never entered open water in a lifejacket; tell the instructor early and everything is taken step by step.

HUET safety and escape, with EBS
Drills for a helicopter that ditches, a controlled descent and the breathing system in use. This is the exercise most candidates are nervous about and the one that most directly separates this certificate from a general safety course.

Hands-on pool drills
Simulated emergencies in aviation suits, lifejackets and the breathing system, using a controlled indoor pool. Bring swimwear and a towel, and declare any medication.

Madurai Junction to Njarakkal: the direct trains
Two daily trains leave Madurai and reach Ernakulam without a change, one by the Tenkasi and Kollam route and one through Pollachi and Palakkad. Both arrive late at night, so plan where you will sleep. By road it is roughly 270 km over the Ghats, and sources give differing times, so treat it as a team option and not a routine one.
Guruvayur Express 16327, day departure

Amrita Express 16344, afternoon departure
Listed at Madurai 16:10 and Ernakulam Town 00:02, covering about 394 km via Pollachi, Palakkad and Thrissur. It lands just after midnight, so book a room from the night before.

Car or tempo traveller via Theni and Munnar
The Kochi to Madurai highway climbs through the hills and is slower than the distance suggests. A group sharing a vehicle can do it, but keep the buffer in your schedule.

Ask the employer, agent or college placement cell to name BOSIET with EBS or T-BOSIET. Keep the message. If an employer has not decided, ask our team before you pay.

Prepare identity and medical basics
Carry a valid photo ID. You must be medically fit for the pool and fire exercises, and you will declare any condition or medication at the start.

Evening before: train in
Take the Guruvayur Express at 11:35 so that you arrive the night before, or the Amrita Express if you prefer a room booked for the whole day.

Days one to three: the course
Safety induction, fire ground, sea survival and the helicopter escape drills with the breathing system. Bring swimwear, a towel and comfortable clothing, and a retaining strap for spectacles.

Travel home and file the certificate
Choose the night train or the morning train after confirming your finish time. Put the four-year expiry in your phone and send a copy to your recruiter.
