Engineers and project staff seconded to operator-run offshore assets
The destination operator, not Doha, sets the induction list.
Qatar's gas expansion has brought a long list of international partners to Doha. Reporting on the North Field East and North Field South projects names TotalEnergies, Eni and ConocoPhillips among the partners in the first phase and TotalEnergies, Shell and ConocoPhillips in the second, each holding a minority share beside QatarEnergy's majority. Companies like these run offshore assets in many other countries, and each has its own induction rules for those places. A technical or project person in Doha who is seconded to one of those assets finds that the requirement follows the asset, not the home office.
QatarEnergy itself has stakes in offshore blocks outside Qatar. In November 2024 it agreed to raise its interest in Namibia's block 2913B, home to the Venus discovery about 300 km offshore, to 35.25 per cent, with TotalEnergies as operator. In May 2026 it was reported to be taking 30 per cent interests in two Uruguayan blocks operated by Shell. Non-operated partners often send engineers, inspectors and assurance staff to visit operator-run assets, and those visits are governed by the operator's induction list, which is where a standard BOSIET is commonly named.
None of this means every Doha job needs BOSIET. For Qatar's own warm-water installations the tropical course may be what the contract names, and our Doha T-BOSIET page covers that case. What the standard version buys is range. It is the course to take if you are between contracts, if a recruiter is asking you to hold a certificate that will not be questioned abroad, or if you have already had one tropical card and do not want a second three-day course to follow your next employer.
International partners hold minority shares in the North Field East and South LNG projects, with QatarEnergy as majority owner.
QatarEnergy's stake is 35.25 per cent after a 2024 deal; TotalEnergies operates and the Venus discovery lies in water 2,600 to 3,800 m deep.
Reported 30 per cent interests in two blocks operated by Shell, announced in May 2026.
A direct flight of about four and a half hours reaches Kochi, so the whole course fits in one working break.
The destination operator, not Doha, sets the induction list.
Rigs and vessels in colder waters are among the places where the standard version is commonly named.
They fly out on short notice and are unlikely to be able to join a helicopter manifest without the certificate.
They manage other people's emergencies, so the helicopter and sea survival modules are working knowledge.
After a career break or a spell onshore, an expired card means starting the induction again.
Agents prefer to put forward someone who already holds the certificate that the widest range of clients name.
Both cost ₹35,000 and last four years. T-BOSIET (5501) is 19 guided hours and is written for tropical regions, without an immersion suit. BOSIET with EBS (5700) is 21 hours, includes the Emergency Breathing System in the helicopter escape work, and is the one many international operators name. A simple test works well: if every contract you can see is in warm water and says tropical, save time with T-BOSIET. If you cannot rule out a colder or international posting, or the document just says BOSIET, take 5700. Ask our team about a bridging route only if you already hold a tropical certificate that is still valid.
The contract names the tropical OPITO 5501 and you expect to stay in warm-water operations.
You want the theory online before a shorter practical visit; ask our team for the current format.
You already hold a BOSIET with EBS and are renewing before the four-year limit.
Your next assignment involves sour gas and you need the half-day OPITO 9014 course as well.
OPITO sets BOSIET with EBS at 21 guided learning hours. The safety induction is entirely theory, and the remaining units are roughly 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practical. Helicopter escape and sea survival take place in an indoor pool on a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire fighting is practised on a dedicated fire ground.
Risk management, safety laws, offshore hazards and incident reporting. This is the vocabulary an operator's induction in another country will assume you know.
Handheld extinguishers, smoke-filled environments and self-rescue, repeated on installations of every type.
Lifejackets, boarding survival craft and water survival techniques, the group of skills a vessel posting leans on most.
Helicopter ditching drills, controlled descent and use of the Emergency Breathing System, a small rebreather used when escaping from a submerged helicopter.
Simulated emergencies in aviation suits, lifejackets and EBS, where the earlier units are tested together.
A Doha office that supplies people to several clients needs a certificate that works for most of them. Booking the standard version for a pool of staff, and tracking expiry dates, is easier than managing two course types.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Commonly named by international operators and some helicopter providers. Confirm the wording in the mobilisation documents. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | May be accepted for warm-water work. Check before assuming it substitutes for the standard version. |
| Basic H2S Training | Sour-gas assets commonly ask for it as a separate certificate with its own two-year validity. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Direct flights connect Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Cochin International Airport (COK), taking about four and a half hours. From Cochin the campus on Vypin island is about 40 km by road.
Aggregators list Air India Express, IndiGo and Qatar Airways on this route. Check the airline for the current schedule.
A pre-booked taxi over the Goshree bridges to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, normally an hour or more.
Between contracts is often the easiest time. Five or six days covers the flight in, the three course days and a spare day for the return.
Indian passport holders do not need a visa for India. Others should check which e-Visa category applies on indianvisaonline.gov.in, since eligibility depends on nationality.
Fees are quoted in INR per person. Confirm the currency and payment method with our team before sending money from Qatar.
Ask for the OPITO code in writing. If the document only says BOSIET, plan for 5700.
Send your dates to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307. Batches run regularly; ask for current dates.
Take a DOH to COK flight and reach the Vypin area the evening before.
Classroom induction, fire ground, sea survival and pool drills including the helicopter escape. Plan nothing else for these days.
Send the certificate to your employer or agent and set a reminder before the four-year limit.
