Gas plant and sulphur plant operators
They work in the units where acid gas is separated and converted, and they are the group most often asked for a current certificate.
QatarEnergy LNG calls the gas offshore at the North Field sour gas: its operations page says 208 wells supply about 18.5 bscfd of it to 14 LNG trains and four sales gas trains. Before liquefaction the acid gases have to come out. BASF announced in 2019 that its OASE and Flexsorb technologies would remove CO2 and H2S from the feed gas for the four new mega trains of the North Field expansion. The hydrogen sulphide does not disappear in that step. It is converted to sulphur, and the sulphur is a product in its own right.
The scale of that conversion is public. Qatargas reported that its Common Sulfur Plant at Ras Laffan processed more than 10,000 tonnes of sulphur a day in August 2021, and described it as one of the world's largest sulphur processing plants. The sulphur arrives as liquid from the North Field gas plants and from Barzan, and leaves as granules, mainly for fertiliser. Barzan itself was reported in 2022 as capable of 30,000 barrels of condensate and 3,500 tonnes of sulphur a day, with 1.4 bscfd of gas for sale.
Dukhan, the onshore concession west of Doha, adds a different one. Oil there was found in 1939 and first exported in 1949, and the field has four reservoirs, three of oil and one of non-associated gas. MEED has described the Khuff reservoir as one of four sour-gas sources supplying Qatar's industrial consumers, with a second acid-gas removal unit planned at Dukhan for 450 million cubic feet a day and a larger unit with amine sweetening planned at Mesaieed. Wellsite and plant crews on the onshore fields work where the gas is still raw.
QatarEnergy's contractor standard, CORP-HSE-STD-080, treats this as a design issue as well as a training one. Its gas hazards section says breathing apparatus must be available where H2S exposure is possible, that operatives must be trained in emergency breathing apparatus approved by OPITO, and that portable gas detectors must be worn in hazardous areas. Read the current revision through your contractor, because the client's wording decides.

About an hour west of Doha, with oil and non-associated gas reservoirs and a Khuff sour-gas source.
MEED reported a 750 million cubic feet a day acid-gas removal unit with amine sweetening.

Granulated sulphur is a different hazard from sour gas, but H2S can collect around storage and loading and the plant exists because of it.
Sampling raw gas and sour liquids puts them close to the source more often than their job title suggests.
Dukhan's Khuff gas is sour, so the wellsite is where the gas is least treated.
They open lines and vessels that held sour fluids, often with unfamiliar site layouts.
They visit several sites in a week, so they carry the certificate that lets them enter all of them.
Ask your supervisor two questions: does my site's permit or induction name H2S training, and is there a date after which my current certificate is not accepted? OPITO's standard describes Basic H2S for personnel in an environment that could become contaminated by the gas, with no prerequisites except completing a medical screening form before the practical exercises. If your trip is to Kochi anyway, the half day is cheap to add. If your next job is a platform, the three-day T-BOSIET can usually be placed in the same week. If you issue or receive permits on sour units, the Permit to Work course is a better complement than a second gas course.
You are heading to a North Field platform or an offshore production station and need the three-day tropical induction as well.
You issue, receive or close permits on units that handle sour gas.
You are on a site emergency team and want practical fire skills beside gas awareness.
OPITO allows four guided learning hours, and the assessment has a theory exam, which can be taken online, and a practical evaluation. Practical exercises use gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty rescue, after a medical questionnaire.
Properties and behaviour of the gas. In Qatar that means sour gas at wellheads, acid gas streams and sulphur storage, which behave differently.
How exposure affects the body. OSHA's guidance lists loss of smell after 2 to 15 minutes at around 100 ppm, which is why the nose cannot be your detector.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring systems. Exposure limits you may be asked about include OSHA's 20 ppm ceiling and 50 ppm ten-minute peak, and NIOSH's 10 ppm ten-minute ceiling.
Donning and using the set correctly and fast, which is the point of QatarEnergy's requirement that emergency breathing apparatus training is OPITO approved.
What to do when a leak is detected, including a casualty rescue and how to raise the alarm.
A theory exam and a practical assessment. Ask our team if you want the theory exam taken online.
H2S training is bought by operators' contractors at the industrial cities, drilling and workover companies serving the onshore fields, laboratory and inspection firms, and manning agencies that place gas plant staff. A two-year certificate falls due twice as often as an offshore survival card, so the coordinator needs a rolling expiry list.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Sour-gas sites commonly ask staff to hold H2S training before access. The OPITO certificate is valid for two years, so track it on its own cycle. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Offshore personnel in QatarEnergy's standard are expected to hold H2S/BA and a tropical induction, so the two are often booked together. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Worth pairing for supervisors who control work on sour units. It is an iMost certificate, so check with your client. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Cochin International Airport (COK) are linked by direct flights of roughly four to four and a half hours. The campus is on Vypin island, about 40 km from Cochin airport by road. A two-night stay can be enough if the batch date lines up.
The route is listed with Air India Express, IndiGo and Qatar Airways; confirm times with the airline.
Each of the three is roughly an hour from Doha by road, in different directions. Drive the day before if you finish a night shift.
Take a prepaid taxi to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, over the Goshree bridges.
A half day adds very little to a family visit to Kerala, so it is often slotted into the first or last day of leave.
An Indian passport needs no visa for India. If you hold another passport, find the right e-Visa category on the official portal before you buy tickets.
The fee is ₹12,500 a head, in rupees. Settle the transfer route from Qatar with our team first and keep the receipt for your employer.
Write down the date on any existing H2S card and the date your site stops accepting it.
Send your days off to +91 8075 787307 on WhatsApp or to info@imostacademy.in. A half-day batch is easier to fit than a three-day one.
If you also need a survival or permit course, ask for a combined timetable so the trip serves all of them.
Fly DOH to COK and take a taxi. Expect a 2 hour 30 minute time shift.
Fill in the medical questionnaire, sit the theory exam and practical evaluation, and tell the instructor about any medication.
Pass the certificate to your supervisor and set a reminder two months before it lapses.
