Field and plant operators on sour projects
They run wells, separators and gas processing where H2S is present at pressure.
Petroleum Development Oman found the Harweel field in 1997 and later discovered seven similar fields across about 1,000 square kilometres. An OGJ report on its enhanced oil recovery work estimated 1.8 billion barrels in place of light sour oil and retrograde condensate, with reservoirs three to five kilometres deep at pressures of 7,000 to 14,000 psi. The associated gas was reported to contain about 5 per cent H2S and 5 to 10 per cent CO2, which is why much of the equipment uses corrosion-resistant alloys. That report dates from 2007, so treat the numbers as a snapshot, not a current analysis.
The Rabab Harweel Integrated Project turned that into a plant. It combines sour miscible gas injection in several oil reservoirs with pressure maintenance of a gas-condensate field, and its scope includes sour gas processing, gathering and injection systems and export pipelines. Petrofac reported start-up on 18 July 2019, with gas from six sour wells arriving two months ahead of schedule. About 16 million standard cubic metres a day of high-pressure sour gas is injected, and condensate goes to the Main Oil Line via Marmul. An operator on that project works with sour gas, at pressure, every shift.
Yibal Khuff is the other landmark. The project is about 360 kilometres south-west of Muscat on a 1.68 square kilometre site, and production began in September 2021, with four sour wells opened and sour oil sent to the central processing facility. It makes about 235 tonnes of solid elemental sulphur a day and includes an acid gas absorber 48 metres tall and 291 tonnes in weight, fabricated in Oman. PDO's managing director cited more than 46 million lost-time-injury-free man-hours, with about 1,200 Omanis on site, 200 of them qualified welders. For a welder, a pipefitter or a scaffolder, that is a long list of sites where a sour-gas induction is the first thing asked.
We have not found a public PDO specification that sets out an H2S training rule, so we do not claim one. Requirements sit in your contract and site induction. Ask your PDO contract holder what applies to your role and whether a certificate from a course outside Oman is accepted.
Discovered in 1997; light sour oil and condensate in reservoirs 3 to 5 km deep, with H2S reported at about 5 per cent in the associated gas (2007).
Sour miscible gas injection; start-up announced on 18 July 2019 with six sour wells.
About 360 km south-west of Muscat; production began in September 2021 with sour oil and about 235 tonnes a day of solid sulphur.
A 48 m tall, 291 tonne column fabricated in Oman for the Yibal Khuff plant.
Fahud is about 282 km by road (3 h 45 min); Marmul about 800 km (roughly 10 hours).
They run wells, separators and gas processing where H2S is present at pressure.
About 1,200 Omanis worked on site at Yibal Khuff, 200 of them qualified welders, and construction and shutdown crews open lines that held sour fluids.
Harweel's reservoirs lie three to five kilometres down, so the wellsite is where raw gas is closest.
They handle sour liquids and gas samples, often alone in a field laboratory.
Fahud is a 3 h 45 min drive from Muscat, so long supply runs end at working sites where the gate induction applies.
They visit several sites in a week and carry the certificate that gets them through each gate.
Check three things before you book: whether your site's induction names H2S training, whether your current certificate falls inside the two years OPITO allows, and whether your contractor accepts a certificate gained outside Oman. OPITO's standard describes Basic H2S for people in an environment that could become contaminated by the gas, with no prerequisites except a medical screening form before the practical exercises. If you supervise work permits at the same site, the Permit to Work course is the natural pairing; if you drive long routes or work alone, Basic First Aid adds the skills for a remote casualty. If you may also work on a vessel or platform, T-BOSIET is the offshore side.
You supervise permitted work on sour-gas units.
You work at remote sites and may be first on scene for a casualty.
Your role extends to vessels or offshore platforms such as those off Musandam.
OPITO allows four guided learning hours. Classroom teaching is paired with exercises using gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty rescue. Assessment is a theory exam, which can be taken online, and a practical evaluation, and a medical questionnaire comes first.
How the gas behaves. At Harweel it is dissolved in oil and condensate at depth; at a sulphur plant it is a vapour among solids.
How exposure affects the body. OSHA's page lists loss of smell after 2 to 15 minutes at around 100 ppm, so the nose is not a detector.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring systems. Reference limits include OSHA's 20 ppm ceiling with a 50 ppm ten-minute peak, and NIOSH's 10 ppm ten-minute ceiling.
Donning and using the set correctly. On a remote site you may have to reach the muster point on your own set.
Steps in a leak or exposure, including a casualty rescue and how to raise the alarm.
Two assessments, one in theory and one practical; ask our team how the online theory option works.
H2S training in Oman is bought by contractors to PDO and other operators, drilling and workover companies, construction and shutdown firms and manning agencies. The practical problem is geography: crews are rotated through camps hundreds of kilometres from Muscat, so a half-day course in Kochi has to be fitted to a leave window, not to a site schedule.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Commonly asked for sour-gas sites. Track the two-year validity apart from any survival certificate. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Pairs well for supervisors, though it is an iMost certificate and your client decides if it counts. |
| Basic First Aid Training | Useful for crews at remote sites; it is an iMost certificate and does not replace any statutory scheme. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is about 32 km from the old city. Direct flights to Cochin (COK) take roughly 3 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes, and the campus on Vypin island is 40 to 45 km from the Kochi airport.
Oman Air, Air India Express and IndiGo are listed on this route. Kochi is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Oman, and timetables change.
Nizwa is about 140 km and 1.5 hours from Muscat; Fahud about 282 km. Allow a night in Muscat before an early flight.
Book a taxi to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, which crosses the Goshree bridges.
A half day adds one night to a Kerala trip. People often put it on the first or last day of leave, because the certificate must be renewed every two years.
An Indian passport needs no visa. Other nationalities can check the e-Visa category on the official portal or ask the Indian Embassy in Muscat.
Fees are charged in rupees, ₹12,500 for each person. Ask our team how to pay from Oman before you transfer anything.
Note the expiry of any current H2S certificate and the date your site stops accepting it.
Write to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307 with the days you are off.
A half-day course can be placed beside Permit to Work or First Aid, so ask for one timetable.
Fly MCT to COK and take a taxi onward.
Answer the medical questionnaire, sit the theory exam and the practical, and mention any medication.
Give the certificate to your supervisor and note the date two years on.
