Stevedores, lashing gangs and quay supervisors
They work among moving cranes, containers and vehicles, often at night and in monsoon wind and rain.
The port at Raysut is the largest in Oman and works around the clock. Its container terminal operator says it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in day and night shifts, and its deepest berths take drafts of 18 metres. Salalah Port reported 4.3 million TEU through the container terminal in 2025, up 31 per cent on the year before, and 26.4 million tonnes through the general cargo terminal, up 17 per cent. More cargo means more lifting, lashing, driving and crane work, and those are the jobs where a crush, a fall from height or a cut from steel strapping happens in seconds.
Weather adds a Salalah-specific factor. The port operator notes monsoon waves of up to 4 metres and winds of 15 to 20 knots between June and August. On land the khareef season, roughly late June to September, brings drizzle, low cloud and mist to Dhofar, with temperatures of around 20 to 27 degrees. Wet decks, slippery quay surfaces and reduced visibility are normal for the port in those months, while outside the monsoon months the work is in warmer, drier conditions. A first aid course that covers wounds, fractures, burns and heat illness fits both halves of the year.
Beside the port, Salalah Free Zone covers about 2.6 million square metres, with plants making methanol, ammonia, PET and LPG, and gypsum board and limestone products, and a service corridor linking it to the port. Raysut Cement describes itself as Oman's largest cement producer, with its main production facility in Salalah. This course is not a chemical-hazard course and does not replace plant emergency training. It gives colleagues the first steps for a casualty while professional help is called, whatever caused the injury.

They work among moving cranes, containers and vehicles, often at night and in monsoon wind and rain.
A driver or operator may be the person who sees a colleague fall or be struck, and who must act before help arrives.
Chemical and materials plants have burns, slips and lifting injuries in addition to process hazards.
Heavy machinery, dust and heat produce crush injuries and heat illness.
They are first on scene at gates and roads and handle visitors as well as workers.
Visitors arriving in large numbers bring choking, falls and sudden illness to places with young, busy staff.
First aid covers the minutes after an injury or illness. It does not teach safe lifting, fire response, hazardous-substance handling or energy isolation. A port team often adds manual handling, an industrial team adds lockout/tagout or hazmat, and anyone responsible for people in a building adds fire fighting or fire warden training. Choose by the incidents your site has recorded. If your employer has told you a specific named first-aider qualification is required, confirm what it accepts first, because our certificate is an iMost certificate.
Lifting, lashing and carrying injuries are the most common on your quay or yard.
Your free zone plant or store handles several chemicals and you need the handling side as well.
Maintenance staff isolate energy sources on plant and need the isolation procedure.
Your team supports emergency response for small fires on a quay or in a plant.
The course is interactive classroom training combined with practical demonstrations, case studies and scenario-based exercises, led by experienced safety professionals. Assessment is a written test, a demonstration and oral questioning.
Definition, importance, legal considerations and objectives. Ask your own employer what its policy requires; the course explains the principles.
CPR, AED use and recovery positions. On a large terminal, knowing the AED location and the route to it saves time.
Wounds, burns, fractures and sprains, the injuries of cranes, steel and machinery.
Choking, heart attacks, strokes and seizures, which can strike any worker on a long night shift.
Heat-related illness, hypothermia, frostbite and poisoning, with heat illness relevant outside the monsoon months and poisoning relevant after a plant exposure.
Children, the elderly and mental health crises, relevant to visitors, families and workers under stress.
Role-playing, simulations and hands-on practice, which is the part people remember on the day.
Employers here include the port operator and its contractors, free zone plant companies, cement and materials producers, hotels and transport firms. A half-day course is simple to place inside a leave visit, and a portal account helps the HSE team track who attended and when.
