Offshore operations and maintenance staff for Block 8
Visits to the Bukha and West Bukha platforms are by sea or air, and the operator sets the induction list.
Oman's only producing offshore fields are Bukha and West Bukha, in Block 8 off the Musandam peninsula in the far north. West Bukha is a six-slot unmanned platform in about 90 m of water roughly 25 km off the coast, tied back to the Bukha platform that was developed in 1994. DNO's 30-year agreement ended on 3 January 2019, and operations passed to Musandam Oil and Gas Company, a subsidiary of Oman Oil Company's upstream arm. Gas from the block supplies the Musandam Gas Plant and a 120 MW power plant at Khasab, and in 2018 the energy minister warned that a break in that gas would disrupt utilities in Musandam. For the small crew who maintain it, a survival certificate is simply part of the job.
The other offshore story is exploration. Eni began Oman's first deepwater well in Block 52 on 10 February 2020, using the drillship Pacifica Bora in about 880 m of water. In 2024 it drilled a shallow-water wildcat from a jack-up 36 km offshore in 31 m of water. MEES reported in April 2025 that Eni had given up the block after that well failed. The lesson is practical: exploration drilling in Oman comes in short, project-based campaigns, and the people hired for them are commonly asked for their certificates before they board.
A reader in Muscat should therefore ask two questions before booking. Is there a named offshore or vessel posting, or only a possibility? And does the contract name the tropical version? Many Muscat-based roles are onshore with PDO or its contractors, where permit to work, first aid and H2S awareness are more often the requirement. If your job is on that side, our Muscat Permit to Work page is the better starting point.
Oman's only offshore producing fields, off Musandam, with an unmanned platform about 25 km from the coast.
Block 8 gas feeds a 120 MW power plant that began operating in 2017.
A deepwater well in 2020 and a shallow-water wildcat in 2024, both drilled by contractors on mobile rigs.
Five blocks of about 48,000 km2 in total, all onshore, per Oman's Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
Visits to the Bukha and West Bukha platforms are by sea or air, and the operator sets the induction list.
Drillships and jack-ups used in Omani waters are staffed by international contractors that routinely check certificates before mobilising.
They load, transfer and stand by around mobile rigs and fixed platforms.
They board vessels and platforms on short notice.
They support others during an emergency, so the helicopter and sea survival modules are working knowledge.
Holding the certificate before applying shortens the time between an offer and joining.
T-BOSIET (5501) is 19 guided hours, drops the immersion suit and spends its sea survival time on heat. It suits warm-water work such as the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. If an international operator is running the rig and the paperwork says BOSIET, the standard BOSIET with EBS (5700) is the one to take, and it costs the same. For people who already hold a tropical certificate and only need a specific piece, ask our team about shorter routes before you pay for a second three-day course. If you never leave the shore, none of these may be the right buy.
The operator or drilling contractor names the standard version, or you may work outside warm water.
Your leave is short and you want to do the theory online before a one-day practical session.
You hold the other elements and only helicopter underwater escape is missing from your record.
Your work is onshore at a plant or shutdown and the real question is permit knowledge.
Classroom theory is combined with instructor-led practical exercises. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in a controlled indoor pool using a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire fighting takes place on a dedicated fire ground. Competence is assessed continuously against the OPITO standard.
Offshore hazards, safety rules and management systems. On a drilling unit it is the same vocabulary as the rig's own induction.
Brace positions, emergency procedures and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter. Useful if any part of your posting is reached by air.
Tropical sea survival techniques, lifejackets, life rafts, hyperthermia and basic first aid, for the moment a boat transfer goes wrong.
Portable extinguishers and escape from a smoke-filled space, relevant to engine rooms, accommodation modules and compressor areas.
Training is bought by upstream operators, drilling and well-service contractors, marine companies and manning agencies. Because offshore campaigns are short, the practical approach is to certify a standing pool of people ahead of time and keep their expiry dates visible.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly asked for warm-water offshore work. Confirm the code in the project's mobilisation documents. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Named by some international operators and drilling contractors. |
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | The refresher for T-BOSIET holders, which OPITO says must be completed within four years of the T-BOSIET. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Direct flights connect Muscat International Airport (MCT) with Cochin International Airport (COK) in about 3 hours 45 minutes. The campus is on Vypin island, roughly 40 km from the airport. If you are posted in Musandam, expect to route through Muscat.
Direct flights are listed with Oman Air, Air India Express and IndiGo. Frequencies change by season, so check the airline.
Oman Air announced the return of direct flights from Muscat to Khasab from 18 April 2026. Check the timetable and plan to reach Muscat the day before your flight to Kochi.
A pre-booked taxi to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, across the Goshree bridges. Allow an hour or more.
Kochi is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Oman. Five days covers arrival, three course days and the flight home, which fits within a normal annual leave.
Indian passport holders do not need a visa for India. Others should check which e-Visa category applies on indianvisaonline.gov.in, or ask the Indian Embassy in Muscat, since eligibility depends on nationality.
Fees are quoted in INR per person. Confirm the currency and payment method with our team before paying from Oman.
Ask for the OPITO code in writing and check whether you need a medical first.
Send your dates to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307. Batches run regularly; ask for current dates.
Take a direct MCT to COK flight and settle near Vypin.
Induction, sea survival, fire ground and the helicopter escape exercises in the pool. Plan nothing else for these days.
Fly back with a spare day in hand, send the certificate to your employer and diarise the four-year expiry.
