Production and process operators
They are flown to platforms for multi-week stints and are the core of any manned installation.
The platforms off Mumbai sit in warm water, and OPITO's tropical standard was written for that environment. It covers offshore hazards and controls, helicopter escape after a ditching, sea survival, first aid, firefighting and self-rescue in smoke, and it totals 19 guided learning hours over four units. Mumbai crews are also unusual in how they reach the field: helicopters have flown out of Juhu aerodrome to the ONGC installations since October 1986, and a 2012 account counted roughly 35 to 36 take-offs and landings a day carrying about 350 ONGC employees. Anyone who boards those flights needs training in helicopter escape, which is why the tropical version includes it.
The installations themselves are varied, which affects the work you will do. The Neelam field lies roughly 45 km south-west of Mumbai and has been the subject of platform life-extension and redevelopment work. The Tapti cluster sits 160 to 200 km north-west of Mumbai in water only 20 to 30 m deep. The Bassein processing complexes, BPA and BPB, were commissioned in 1987 and 1989 and handle acidic gas that contains H2S before it goes on to Hazira. The jobs range from hook-up crews to process operators and inspection teams, but they share one entry requirement: a valid induction.
Mumbai also supplies the contract workforce. Engineering, fabrication, catering and logistics firms recruit in the city and place staff on platforms for weeks at a time. For a first-time candidate the sequence is simple: the posting is confirmed, T-BOSIET is requested, and the candidate books three days in Kochi.

Contractors that work on platform revamp and life-extension jobs mobilise from Mumbai yards and offices and need every worker inducted.
Short campaigns offshore mean frequent helicopter transfers, so the helicopter escape component is directly relevant.
Accommodation and catering contractors place staff on manned platforms and ask for the same induction.
Agencies often require the certificate before they will submit a profile to a contractor.
Start from where your client works. For a contract on the western offshore, T-BOSIET is the version that matches the water temperature. If the same contract might put you in the North Sea or with an operator that names the standard version, ask your agency to confirm before you spend ₹35,000, because BOSIET with EBS is a different certificate with aviation suits and a breathing system. If you only need helicopter escape, T-HUET may be enough. Some operators in warm regions issue an emergency breathing system for helicopter flights, and OPITO has a separate standard (code 5900) for that, taken with T-BOSIET or T-HUET; ask your employer if it is needed and our team if we run it. If you hold a valid T-BOSIET and a new contract wants the standard version, OPITO also publishes a bridging element, though availability varies by centre.
The contract names the standard version, or the job may be outside warm-water regions.
You only need helicopter underwater escape in the tropical form, for example to complete a missing module.
You already hold a valid T-BOSIET and are within its last months of validity.
The platform or plant handles sour gas; it is a separate half-day course.
The course mixes classroom theory with instructor-led practical exercises. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in an indoor pool with a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire and smoke exercises take place on a fire ground. Assessment is continuous and practical, so you must demonstrate competence in every exercise before the certificate is issued.
Offshore hazards and risk controls, the safety legislation and management systems in force, and roles and responsibilities. It is the briefing for your first day on a Mumbai High or Neelam platform.
Helicopter travel hazards in tropical regions, brace positions and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter. It prepares you for the platform flights most Mumbai crews take.
Tropical sea survival techniques without an immersion suit, lifejackets, life rafts, hyperthermia considerations and basic first aid. The warm-water focus is the main difference from the standard course.
Fire hazards and prevention, portable extinguishers and escaping a smoke-filled space. On a gas-handling platform, leaving a smoke-filled module quickly is the point.
Engineering and fabrication firms, accommodation and catering contractors, inspection companies and manning agencies in Mumbai typically send offshore-bound staff in cohorts timed to a mobilisation. A fixed three-day course in Kochi suits that pattern.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly asked for by contractors working in tropical waters, including the western offshore. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Named in some contracts, especially when staff could be deployed outside warm water. |
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | The refresher before the four-year point. |
| Basic H2S Training | Where assets handle sour gas; confirm for your site. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
The campus is in Njarakkal, on Vypin island, a road transfer from Kochi's airport and railway junction. Flights from Mumbai take about two hours.
Choose a flight that lands in Kochi the evening before day one so that you are rested for the pool sessions. Fly home on the evening of day three, or the next morning for margin.
Cochin International Airport is about 40 km from Njarakkal, usually just over an hour by taxi, depending on traffic.
The overland route takes a day or more. It rarely makes sense for three days of training unless you are combining it with leave.
Confirm the course name with your client or agency and arrange your medical evidence. Ask our team on WhatsApp at +91 8075 787307 or at info@imostacademy.in for the next batch dates.
Book flights, stays and payment. If your rotation ends on a Friday, check whether a batch starting on the following Monday fits.
Expect classroom theory and practical blocks, with the tropical helicopter escape and sea survival sessions in the pool. Our team will share the timetable for your batch.
Send a copy of your certificate to your agency or employer straight away and note the renewal month. Four years from the course date, you take the T-FOET refresher.
