Rotation crew for rigs, platforms and plants elsewhere
The destination site writes the H2S requirement into its induction, and you carry the card from Goa.
The honest starting point is that the gas comes from elsewhere. Sour gas and sour crude are produced, processed and shipped in other places, and Goans reach them by rotation: onto rigs and platforms, into refinery and plant shutdowns, or aboard tankers and offshore support vessels. For those jobs, the H2S certificate is a requirement that travels with the person, and it is set by the site or the vessel's operator, not by anything in Goa.
Some exposure does sit closer to home. Goa Shipyard at Vasco, which Wikipedia says has built 167 vessels since 1957, has commissioned a slipway for major repair work in its dry dock area. Ship work means tanks, bilges and voids. A West P&I Club loss prevention bulletin warns that marine bunkers can generate H2S, and that vapour in a bunker compartment can sit well above the figure declared for the fuel. You do not need an offshore field for that hazard to be real, only a vessel taking on fuel.
At Mormugao, the port authority handles coal, iron ore and other bulk cargo over 11 berths, and unloads naphtha and ammonia that move by pipeline to Zuarinagar. Those are not sulphide cargoes, but port work still brings people aboard ships and into enclosed spaces. On land, Margao's two sewage treatment plants at Sirvodem, of 20 and 6.75 million litres a day, were reported in 2023 to be running close to full capacity in the monsoon. Wherever sewage sits or flows slowly, H2S can form, and chambers and pump sumps are where it collects.
A third group is easy to forget: fishing and fish handling. Ireland's Health and Safety Authority notes that rotting fish can produce hydrogen sulphide and lists holds containing decaying fish, waste or offal as potential confined spaces. A hold that has been left uncleaned in Goa's warm weather is a setting where that guidance applies. If your work is purely local, ask your employer which certificate they expect before you plan a 740 km trip for a half-day course.
Founded in 1957 and credited with 167 vessels; it has commissioned a new slipway for major repair work.
Eleven berths handling coal, iron ore and other bulk cargo, with naphtha and ammonia piped on to Zuarinagar.

Goa-based people who work on tankers, offshore vessels, rigs and plants elsewhere carry the certificate with them.

Bunker and cargo tanks can release the gas, and a ship manager's procedures may call for awareness training.
Tank and void entry is routine in repair work, and the hazard is easy to underestimate in an empty-looking space.
Gas can build in chambers and sumps and come out when flows change.
Holds and tanks with decaying waste are enclosed spaces, and a trained person will treat them as one.
Be sceptical of any course that does not match your next job. Basic H2S (9014) earns its place when a site, a vessel or a contract names the gas, and it does not replace the entry rules that come from your employer's permit system and confined space procedure. A rotation to an offshore installation changes the order of things: you need the survival induction to board at all, and H2S becomes the add-on. Port and yard staff whose cargo is ammonia, solvents or other chemicals may be better served by a hazardous materials course. A half day can ride along with any of these, but a trip from Margao for H2S alone is hard to justify unless a document demands it.
You are headed to an offshore installation in warm water and need the transfer induction as well.
Your port or yard work involves chemical cargoes more than sour gas.
You look after a small team and want first aid alongside gas awareness.
You start with a health questionnaire, then classroom teaching, then hands-on use of detectors, a breathing set and a mock rescue. Assessment has two parts: a theory paper that can be sat online, and a practical evaluation on site.
What the gas is and how it moves, including why it gathers low down in still air, which describes a tank, a sump and a hold.
How exposure affects the body as levels rise, and why your nose cannot be trusted as the alarm.
Fixed and personal detectors and their alarms. A tank can read clear at one position and not at another, so you learn the limits of a reading as well as its use.
Fitting and running the set correctly, practised in advance so that the alarm is not your first lesson.
The steps to take in a leak or when a colleague goes down, with the rescue you rehearse. Rushing in unprotected is the mistake the course trains out.
The pre-course questionnaire, then the theory paper and practical check that decide whether you pass.
Employers here are ship managers and crewing agents, repair yards and the contractors who support them, along with utility and fish-processing operators. Few of them need H2S for everyone, so the question is whom to certify: the crew who rotate to sour sites, and the supervisors who control tank and chamber entry.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Requested for sour-gas sites and sometimes for tanker or FPSO crews. Check the wording in the contract. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Taken alongside H2S when the job is on an installation out at sea. |
| Hazardous Materials HAZMAT Training | For port and yard staff who handle chemical cargoes. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Margao is about 740 km from Kochi by road, so the sensible choices are a short flight or an overnight train. The campus is on Vypin island, about 40 km from Cochin International Airport and about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction by the Goshree bridges.
IndiGo flies this route, listed at roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes. Weekly frequencies differ between listings, so check the airline before you commit to a date.
The Madgaon-Ernakulam Superfast (10215) is shown leaving Madgaon at 21:00 and reaching Ernakulam Junction about 11:00 the next day, though sources disagree on its running days. Several other Kerala-bound trains stop at Madgaon, so use IRCTC for live timings.
Route planners show about 738 km and close to 11 hours of driving. It suits a group travelling together, but not a half-day course on its own.
From the airport or Ernakulam, take a taxi or app cab across the Goshree bridges to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal.
Ask for the H2S wording from the site, vessel manager or contract, and note when any current card ends.
If you also need an offshore induction, ask for batches that fit both into one trip.
Message +91 8075 787307 or email info@imostacademy.in with your days off. Batches run regularly.
Fly from Dabolim, or take the evening train and add a rest day.
Health form, teaching, equipment practice and rescue, then the theory paper and the practical check.
Send the certificate to your employer or crewing agent and set a reminder for the second anniversary.
