OPITO offshore safety training in Kochi for Mumbai crew

Mumbai is where India's western offshore business is run from: ONGC's Mumbai High and Bassein assets, the contractors that serve them, and the manning agencies that place seafarers worldwide. If your next job is on a platform, a supply vessel or a rig, you will be asked for an OPITO induction certificate, and the quickest way to get it is a three-day trip to our campus in Njarakkal, Kochi. Candidates and company teams from Navi Mumbai and Thane come to the same campus, and the flight from Mumbai takes about two hours.

Why Mumbai crew need an offshore induction

The Mumbai High field lies roughly 160 km off the Mumbai coast in the Arabian Sea, and ONGC has operated it since production began in 1976. It is divided into Mumbai High North and Mumbai High South, two blocks that can be developed independently, and ONGC has kept approving new development phases and wells in both. Crude and associated gas travel to the Uran plant on the Navi Mumbai side of the harbour by a long subsea pipeline, so a large part of the workforce sits in the Mumbai region even though the platforms are far out at sea.

In January 2025 ONGC picked BP as technical service provider for Mumbai High under a ten-year contract, with a stated aim of lifting output from the field. Work of that kind brings reservoir, well and facilities engineers, and inspection and maintenance teams, who fly or sail out on rotation. Separately, ONGC announced in 2023 a drilling programme of more than 100 locations on the Bassein and Satellite assets, which keeps demand for rig, hook-up and logistics crews steady in the same offshore basin.

Mumbai is also the administrative centre for Indian seafarers. The Directorate General of Shipping has its headquarters here and the Seamen's Employment Office in Mumbai issues Recruitment and Placement of Seafarers (RPSL) licences, so many manning agencies are registered and operating from the city. Their candidates tend to be younger and in the process of building a first offshore or marine CV, which is why a basic induction is the first certificate asked for.

Water temperature decides which version of the induction you take. Mumbai High is a warm-water operation, and OPITO's tropical programme (T-BOSIET) was written for exactly that environment. It is the course our Mumbai enquiries ask about most. Standard BOSIET is usually the answer only if your employer or client names it, for example when the job could move to the North Sea or to an operator that insists on it.

Training for Mumbai offshore operators, contractors and manning agencies

The buyers in the Mumbai region are offshore service contractors, drilling and construction companies, vessel owners, inspection firms and manning agencies, plus the HSE teams of onshore plants in the Uran and Navi Mumbai belt. Most send crew in groups timed to a rotation or to a mobilisation, which suits a three-day residential course in Kochi.

Standards that shape training in Maharashtra

Petroleum and Natural Gas (Safety in Offshore Operations) Rules, 2008Notified by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on 18 June 2008 under the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Act; they set the safety framework for offshore installations in India.
OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate)Designated as the competent authority for safety in offshore oil and gas installations under those Rules; it grants consent to operate and carries out safety audits.
DGH (Directorate General of Hydrocarbons)The upstream technical regulator and the host of the Rules on its website; operators work with it on field development and data.
Directorate General of Shipping (DGS)Mumbai-based regulator for Indian seafarers; its circulars tell crew to deal only with valid RPSL-licensed agencies, and it checks agency compliance.
Operator and contractor induction rulesONGC and its service contractors set the induction certificates required for each contract. Your work order or contract decides, not a general rule.

What employers commonly ask for

CourseRequirement note
Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET)Operators and contractors working in tropical offshore waters often accept T-BOSIET as the entry induction for offshore crew. Confirm against your contract.
Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS)Some clients and international contractors ask for the standard BOSIET (with EBS), especially when personnel may be deployed outside warm waters.
Basic H2S TrainingWhere assets may handle sour gas, H2S awareness is commonly asked for. Whether your site needs it depends on the client and asset.
Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET)The four-year refresher for T-BOSIET holders. Companies tracking rotations often schedule it in the final months of validity.

Planning a group booking

  • Register your company at portal.imostacademy.in/register to get team logins, contract (rate card) pricing and group bookings once approved.
  • Invoices to Indian companies are issued in INR with GST; purchase orders are accepted. Credit terms are considered after a credit assessment.
  • Group your people by rotation: sending a crew-change cohort together keeps hotel and flight costs predictable. Ask our team about batch dates for your month.
  • The portal tracks certificates and renewal dates for your staff, which helps manning agencies and contractors keep a roster compliant ahead of mobilisation.

Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.

Getting from Mumbai to the Kochi campus

The campus is at Njarakkal on Vypin island, about 40 km from Cochin International Airport and about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction. Most Mumbai candidates fly in the evening before the course, sleep in Ernakulam or on Vypin and report the next morning.

Fly Mumbai to Kochi (COK)

IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air list direct BOM to COK flights, with a block time of about two hours. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), which opened in December 2025, also lists IndiGo and Akasa Air services to Kochi, which helps if you live in Navi Mumbai or Thane. Timetables change by season, so check the airline site when you book.

Konkan Railway to Ernakulam Junction

The Netravati Express (16345) leaves Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at about 11:40 and reaches Ernakulam Junction (ERS) at about 14:10 the next day, roughly 26 hours. The LTT to Ernakulam Duronto (12223) takes about 23 hours but does not run daily. Check running days on the IRCTC site before you plan around either.

Driving the coast road

Mumbai to Njarakkal is about 1,360 km by road down the NH66 coastal corridor, a drive of 18 hours or more without stops. It makes sense mainly for a team travelling with equipment, not for a three-day course.

Planning your trip from Mumbai

  1. 1

    Confirm which certificate you need

Ask your agency or employer whether they want T-BOSIET or BOSIET, and whether Basic H2S or a helicopter-only module is also needed. If you are building a first offshore CV and the employer has not decided, T-BOSIET is the usual starting point for tropical work.

  2. 2

    Check dates and book

Batches run regularly. Message our team on WhatsApp at +91 8075 787307 or email info@imostacademy.in with the course and the month you prefer.

  3. 3

Book flights around the three days

Arrive the evening before. Book your return for the evening of day three, or the next morning if you want a margin. Single-day courses such as T-HUET can be done as a day trip only if a morning flight lands in time.

  4. 4

    Pack for the water sessions

Swimwear, towel, comfortable clothing and valid photo ID. If you wear spectacles, bring a retaining strap. Declare any medication to the instructor on the first morning.

  5. 5

    File your certificate

OPITO certificates are valid for four years and Basic H2S for two. Keep a copy for your agency and your next employer, and note the renewal month before you leave Kochi.
