Permit to Work PTW System Training
Duration: Half Day
Fee: ₹10,000
For permit issuers and contractor leads in the Taloja and TTC estates, at Uran shutdowns and on JNPA tank farms.
View course →The Uran peninsula, at the south-eastern end of the Navi Mumbai region, is where offshore production meets the shore. ONGC's Uran plant is the onshore terminal for the Mumbai High fields: a 30-inch oil line and a 28-inch gas line, together about 204 km, were laid from the field to replace an older trunkline that had reached the end of its design life. Crude is stabilised at the terminal, and gas and condensate are processed to recover LPG, C2/C3 and naphtha; an expansion package awarded in 2010 added a gas sweetening unit and an LPG recovery unit. Most people employed here are onshore operators, technicians and shutdown contractors, who need plant-side certificates such as H2S awareness and permit to work far more often than helicopter escape. Engineers whose work orders cover both the terminal and the platforms may be asked for an offshore induction as well.
Across the creek, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) was commissioned on 26 May 1989. It lists five container terminals and says it handles about half the containerised cargo of India's major ports. Its liquid jetty is a twin berth built by a BPCL and IOCL consortium and working since October 2002, taking vessels up to 120,000 DWT, with 23 pipelines running to tank farms for petroleum products, edible oil, chemicals and acids. A container terminal rarely needs an offshore induction. The liquid berths, the tank farms behind them and the multi-product SEZ are where fire watch, hazardous-materials handling, oil-spill response and permit-to-work discipline count. Tug, launch and bunkering crews are more likely to be asked for first aid and firefighting.
Inland, the Trans-Thane Creek (TTC) MIDC estate along Thane-Belapur Road covers about 27 sq km, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board lists chemicals, dyes and dye intermediates, bulk drugs, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, petrochemicals and engineering units among its occupiers. Taloja MIDC, between Panvel and Kharghar and close to the port, is mainly a chemical estate with food processing and engineering alongside. The courses that fit these shop floors are permit to work, lockout and tagout, hazardous materials, fire watch and risk assessment, with Basic H2S for any process that can release the gas. Apart from H2S, these are iMost certificates rather than OPITO ones.
Navi Mumbai is also a seafarer town. The Indian Maritime University's Navi Mumbai campus at Karave, Nerul, is the shore-based successor to Training Ship Chanakya and has belonged to the university since 2008. Short-course institutes and crewing agencies cluster around CBD Belapur and Vashi; confirm any agency's licence on the DG Shipping site before paying anything. Cadets and junior seafarers building a first CV usually add an offshore induction when they move from ships to platforms: T-BOSIET for warm-water western offshore work, BOSIET with EBS when the job could involve the North Sea or a client who names the standard version.
Onshore terminal for Mumbai High crude and gas, with LPG recovery and condensate processing on site.
Five container terminals at Nhava Sheva, commissioned as a major port on 26 May 1989.
Twin-berth jetty working since October 2002, linked by 23 pipelines to tank farms for petroleum products and chemicals.
About 27 sq km estate of chemical, pharmaceutical, dye and engineering units.
Chemical-led estate between Panvel and Kharghar, close to the port.
Government maritime university campus training nautical cadets.

Half a day for Uran gas-processing staff and any chemical or pharma unit whose process can release hydrogen sulphide.
View course →Duration: 1 Day

For terminal, tank-farm and marine staff at the JNPA liquid berths.
View course →OPITO code: 5700
Duration: 3 Days
Fee: ₹35,000
For seafarers and cadets whose first offshore job may be with an international operator that names the standard version.
View course →OPITO code: 5501
Duration: 3 Days
Fee: ₹35,000
The usual induction for warm-water western offshore work, for contractors who mobilise crews from Navi Mumbai.
View course →The buyers here are very different from each other: ONGC contractors working at the Uran terminal, terminal and tank-farm operators at JNPA, plant EHS teams in the Taloja and TTC estates, marine service firms, and crewing agencies placing cadets and ratings. Most need a mix of OPITO and non-OPITO certificates.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Clients at chemical units, tank farms and the Uran terminal often want permit issuers and receivers trained. |
| Basic H2S Training | Asked for where a process or a gas stream may contain hydrogen sulphide. Confirm with the site whether it is required for your role. |
| Fire Watch Training | Hot work at tank farms and shutdown jobs calls for a trained fire watch; the site permit sets who may do it. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Some international operators and contractors name the standard version for offshore and helicopter work. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Njarakkal, on Vypin island, is the campus; Cochin International Airport lies about 40 km away and Ernakulam Junction about 15 km. Navi Mumbai has its own airport, so many candidates can fly from the same side of the harbour they live on.
NMI began commercial operations on 25 December 2025 and its destination list shows Kochi for both IndiGo and Akasa Air; one flight-schedule site shows about two hours and one daily service each. The airport sits near Panvel on National Highway 348, about 35 km from the older Mumbai airport. Check the airline site for your month.
NMI has an interchange with the Port line of the Mumbai suburban railway at Targhar station, and a link to Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is planned. Suburban trains from Nerul and CBD Belapur now run on to Uran through Nhava Sheva and Dronagiri.
The 21.8 km Atal Setu sea bridge from Sewri to Chirle opened on 12 January 2024, giving Uran residents a second route to Mumbai's main airport.
Panvel is the Konkan Railway junction for the Kerala-bound services, which makes it the practical boarding point for anyone going by rail. Check IRCTC for trains stopping at Ernakulam Junction (ERS), and allow a day or more.
If your work order or agency asks for an OPITO induction, you need BOSIET or T-BOSIET. If your supervisor asks for permit, H2S, fire watch or hazmat records, those are separate courses, and several can often be planned into one trip.
Ask for the exact course name and code. The contract decides between the tropical and standard versions.
Compare NMI and the older Mumbai airport. Vashi and Belapur residents will find NMI closer; Uran residents may prefer the Atal Setu route as a fallback.
Message our team on WhatsApp at +91 8075 787307 or email info@imostacademy.in for current batch dates. Batches run regularly. Arrive the evening before the course starts.
OPITO induction certificates are valid for four years and Basic H2S for two. Note the renewal month before you leave Kochi.
