Deck and engine crew on offshore support vessels
Crew joining vessels that service installations are often asked for the same induction as platform staff.
A deck rating from harbour craft off Nhava Sheva, a technician from the Uran terminal's gas processing units, a cadet finishing at the Indian Maritime University's Nerul campus: each may be offered a first posting with an owner whose fields lie outside the Arabian Sea. The contract rarely says "offshore induction". It names a course, and the course is often BOSIET with EBS.
The reason is the helicopter. OPITO describes BOSIET with EBS as the induction for people who will be issued a rebreather emergency breathing system for helicopter travel offshore, and the standard requires 21 guided learning hours over four mandatory units. The tropical T-BOSIET is built for warm water and takes 19 hours. The difference is the equipment you train on, chiefly aviation transit suits and the EBS.
Navi Mumbai residents also have a shorter trip than before: the new Navi Mumbai International Airport lists Kochi flights, so you need not cross to the older airport.
Four mandatory units, 21 guided learning hours; helicopter escape is practised with aviation suits and the breathing system.
OPITO publishes a short bridging standard (5 guided learning hours) for people who already hold a valid T-BOSIET; ask our team whether we are running it before you plan around it.
OPITO accepts an offshore medical, an employer-approved equivalent, a certificate of medical fitness to work at sea, or a screening form completed at the centre.
Commercial flights began on 25 December 2025; IndiGo and Akasa Air list Kochi.
Crew joining vessels that service installations are often asked for the same induction as platform staff.
A posting with an operator abroad that flies crews to platforms adds the induction to the joining paperwork.
Cadets finishing in Nerul who want an offshore career may take BOSIET early to keep options open.
Contractors sending technicians on short overseas campaigns often list a current BOSIET among the required certificates.
Both inductions are listed at ₹35,000 and three days, so pick by where the client works. T-BOSIET covers tropical, warm-water regions; BOSIET with EBS is the standard version, and many international and North Sea operators name it. If you already hold a valid T-BOSIET and a new employer wants the standard certificate, ask whether you can take OPITO's bridging element instead of the full course, and whether the client accepts that route. If a contract names neither, ask your agency or employer in writing. Ask about the medical in the same message, because some operators expect an offshore medical from an approved doctor.
Your contract is for warm-water work and names the tropical standard.
You already hold a valid BOSIET and are renewing before the four years end.
You need helicopter underwater escape only, for example to add the EBS element to existing sea survival and fire training.
The assignment includes facilities that may handle sour gas; it is a half-day add-on, not part of BOSIET.
Training is classroom theory followed by instructor-led practical exercises. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in an indoor pool using a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire-fighting takes place on a fire ground. Assessment is continuous and practical, so you must show competence in every exercise.
Risk management, safety laws, offshore hazards and incident reporting, for people coming from a port or plant background.
Handheld extinguishers and escaping a smoke-filled space, practised on a fire ground.
Lifejackets, boarding survival craft and water survival techniques, assessed to the OPITO standard even if you know the ground from ship drills.
Ditching drills, controlled descent and use of the emergency breathing system. This is the module that separates the standard version from the tropical one.
Simulated emergencies in aviation suits, lifejackets and EBS.
Marine service firms, offshore contractors and crewing agencies around Vashi, Belapur and Uran send people on international contracts, usually in small groups timed to a joining date.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Often named by international operators and contractors for staff who will travel by helicopter in non-tropical regions. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Where the client works in tropical waters, T-BOSIET may be the named course instead. |
| Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS (FOET with EBS) | The four-year refresher for BOSIET holders; schedule it before the certificate lapses. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Our campus sits at Njarakkal on Vypin island. A flight from Navi Mumbai to Kochi takes about two hours, and the campus is a further road transfer away.
IndiGo and Akasa Air list the route (about two hours). Choose a flight that lands the evening before the first day.
Taxis cover the roughly 40 km from Cochin International Airport; from Ernakulam Junction it is about 15 km over the Goshree bridges.
Get the course name in writing from your employer or agency, arrange your medical evidence, and ask our team for batch dates on WhatsApp at +91 8075 787307 or at info@imostacademy.in.
Fly NMI to COK, check in near the campus and pack swimwear, a towel and a retaining strap for spectacles.
Theory and practical blocks run across the three days, with the pool and fire-ground exercises assessed as you go. Our team will give you the timetable for your batch; rest and eat well before the water sessions.
On success an OPITO certificate valid for four years is issued. Book your return flight for the evening of day three or the next morning.
