Common effluent plant operators and shift chemists
Equalisation, neutralisation and sludge areas are where mixed streams and still liquid give gas a chance to build.
Start with the industrial estate. The Trans-Thane Creek MIDC area along Thane-Belapur Road is described in the pollution board's action plan as home to about 3,254 units making chemicals, dyes, dye intermediates, bulk drugs, pharmaceuticals and pesticides, with trade effluent of about 26 million litres a day. Large units treat their own effluent first and then send it to a common plant of 27 MLD, built in two phases in 1997 and 2006 on the extended aeration activated-sludge process. Its parts include a collection, equalisation and neutralisation sump, aeration tanks, clarifiers and sludge drying beds. Sulphide-bearing streams meeting acid in a sump is the textbook way for H2S to come off, which is why those tanks matter.
Taloja has its own common effluent plant, recorded in tribunal papers at about 22.5 MLD in two phases, serving a chemical-led estate between Panvel and Kharghar. Staff at such plants include process operators, laboratory chemists and the maintenance contractors who clear screens and sludge. Their hazard is a slowly changing enclosed atmosphere, not a pressurised leak.
The city's sewage works add a second group. In the same action plan, the municipal sewage treatment plants of Navi Mumbai are listed at eight sites, from Belapur to Airoli, with Nerul Sector 50 and Vashi at 100 MLD each and a combined capacity of 473 MLD. Pumping stations, inlet chambers and sludge handling in works of that size are classic H2S locations, and a good share of the crews running them are contract staff.
Uran is the third setting. ONGC's plant at the south-eastern tip of the region receives Mumbai High production, and an expansion package awarded in 2010 added a gas sweetening unit, the stage that removes sulphur compounds from gas. Operators and shutdown contractors there meet H2S as a process hazard behind alarms and permits. Be realistic about the port: a container-terminal job has little to do with the gas, though tank-farm and tank-cleaning work behind the liquid berths may, so ask your employer before you book.
27 MLD, commissioned in two phases (12 MLD in 1997, 15 MLD in 2006), serving an estate of about 3,254 units.
Recorded in tribunal papers at about 22.5 MLD in two phases; the estate is chemical-led.
Eight plants from Belapur to Airoli, 473 MLD in total, with Nerul Sector 50 and Vashi at 100 MLD each.
Onshore terminal for Mumbai High; a 2010 expansion added a gas sweetening unit.
Equalisation, neutralisation and sludge areas are where mixed streams and still liquid give gas a chance to build.
Inlet works and wet wells are enclosed, low-lying and often contract-operated, so the person at the grating may not be the site's own employee.
They open the tanks others close; a client's induction may ask for gas-awareness proof before the work order is issued.
Gas-treating units are process areas where portable detectors and escape sets form part of the kit.
They write confined-space plans and may be the first to respond when a colleague falls ill in a pit.
Basic H2S teaches you to recognise the gas, use a detector and an escape set, and respond to a casualty. It does not teach you to plan or authorise entry into a sump or tank, which is the job of your site's permit system. Permit to work covers who may issue and receive such permits. If your chemicals arrive in drums and tankers more than they leak from a process, hazardous materials training is wider. If a colleague may need help before the plant's responders arrive, add first aid. If your posting involves offshore installations as well, you will also need the tropical or standard offshore induction. For many Navi Mumbai staff, H2S is the only card needed when no offshore work is planned.
You issue, receive or close permits for entry into sumps, tanks and chambers.
Your risk is drums, tankers and spills of chemicals rather than a gas given off by a process.
You lead a small team and want casualty care alongside gas awareness.
Your Uran contractor also posts people to platforms in warm water.
A medical questionnaire comes first. Teaching follows, then hands-on work with gas detectors and escape breathing apparatus, and a simulated rescue. You sit a theory paper (with an online option) and a practical evaluation.
How the gas behaves, including its tendency to gather low in still air, which describes a wet well, a pit or a sludge bay.
How exposure affects the body as concentrations rise, and why a worker who can no longer smell it may be in more danger, not less.
Fixed and personal detectors, alarms and monitoring. You practise reading a detector and judging what a clear reading at the grating does and does not tell you about the chamber below.
Donning and running the set correctly before you ever need it, which matters for gas-plant crews and any pumping-station team that carries sets.
Steps to take in a leak or exposure, and a casualty rescue exercise. It trains out the instinct to rush into a pit unprotected to reach a colleague.
The questionnaire before practical work, and the two assessments that decide the result.
Employers here include estate common-plant operators, municipal sewage works and their contractors, factories with their own treatment plants, and contractors at the Uran terminal. Few need every employee certified; the useful question is who enters, who monitors and who leads a rescue.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Asked for where a process or enclosed space may contain hydrogen sulphide; confirm against the site induction or work order. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Often paired for supervisors who authorise entry into sumps and tanks. |
| Hazardous Materials HAZMAT Training | For stores, tanker unloading and effluent chemical dosing teams. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | For Uran contractors whose staff may also be posted offshore in warm water. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Our campus is on Vypin island at Njarakkal. The airport on the Navi Mumbai side lists flights to Kochi, so most people fly in the evening, sit the half day and leave the next morning.
IndiGo and Akasa Air list Kochi among the destinations from Navi Mumbai International Airport, at about two hours on one schedule site. Check the airline for your month before buying.
Panvel is the Konkan line junction closest to Taloja and Uran. The ride to Ernakulam Junction takes a day or more, which is worth it for a half day only if you already have leave booked.
A taxi from Cochin International Airport covers roughly 40 km to Njarakkal; from Ernakulam Junction the Goshree bridges shorten it to around 15 km.
Check the induction pack or work order for the H2S wording and the validity it accepts. Note the expiry of any card you already hold.
Tell our team the month and headcount on +91 8075 787307 (WhatsApp) or at info@imostacademy.in. Batches run regularly.
If you also need permit to work, hazmat or an offshore induction, ask whether the dates can sit in the same stay.
Report in the morning: questionnaire, classroom session, detector and escape-set drills, a mock rescue, then both assessments.
Give the certificate to your employer or client and set a reminder for the month before the two years end.
