Refinery process operators and shift supervisors
Hydrotreating, amine and sulphur units are the places where the gas is produced and handled.
The Mahul and Trombay belt on Mumbai's eastern seafront holds two large refineries. BPCL states that its Mumbai refinery processes 12 million tonnes of crude a year and has added a diesel hydrotreater, a naphtha isomerisation unit and a gasoline treatment unit to meet BS-VI fuel standards. HPCL's Mumbai refinery, in the south-eastern part of the city, has grown from 7.5 to about 9.5 million tonnes a year, and its diesel hydrotreater complex includes a sulphur recovery unit, an amine regeneration unit and a sour water stripper. Sulphur removal is where H2S is concentrated, which is why operators, shutdown contractors and laboratory staff in these plants are the group most often asked for the course.
Offshore, the exposure is different. The Bassein processing complexes, BPA and BPB, were commissioned in 1987 and 1989 and handle acidic, corrosive gas containing H2S before it continues to Hazira. ONGC's Uran terminal, where western offshore gas comes ashore, added a gas sweetening unit under an expansion package awarded in 2010. People who work on these facilities, and the contractors who maintain them, meet H2S in enclosed modules and around many flanges.
A practical warning explains why classroom training is not optional. The smell of H2S is not a reliable alarm, because people can lose the ability to smell it even at low concentrations. OSHA guidance says the nose should not be used as a detector. That is why detection equipment and escape breathing apparatus sit at the centre of the course rather than awareness alone.

Opening lines and vessels that have been in sour service exposes fitters, riggers and scaffolders to residual gas.
Staff working on sour-gas complexes are commonly asked for H2S awareness on top of the offshore induction; confirm with the site.
Rescue in a gas atmosphere requires breathing apparatus and a rehearsed plan.
Basic H2S is a different kind of course from the offshore inductions. T-BOSIET and BOSIET with EBS cover helicopter escape, sea survival and firefighting; they do not teach you to use a gas detector or escape set. If your job is offshore on a sour-gas asset, you may need both, in sequence. If you are a shift operator or contractor at a Mahul refinery, you may only need H2S plus a permit-to-work course. Check your site's rules rather than guessing, as site orders vary. Because the course is half a day and each induction runs three, ask our team whether the half day can be put before or after your induction days in a batch you are attending.
You are heading to a warm-water platform and need the induction as well; H2S is a separate course.
Your client names the standard induction and also works with sour gas.
You issue or receive permits for jobs on lines and vessels that may contain H2S.
Your plant handles several hazardous substances beyond H2S.
The course combines classroom theory with practical exercises using gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty-rescue scenario. There are two assessments: a theory exam, with an online option, and a practical assessment. A medical questionnaire is completed before the course starts.
Properties and behaviour of the gas, and why sour water strippers and sulphur units need controls.
How exposure affects the body at different levels. It also explains why smell is an unreliable warning.
Correct use, operation and safety procedures for the escape set that refinery and platform workers carry.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring systems. India's Factories Act schedule has long listed 10 ppm as the eight-hour limit and 15 ppm as the short-term limit; your site states the limits it applies.
Steps to take during a leak or exposure, including casualty rescue under the simulated scenario.
Theory exam, with an online option, and a practical evaluation.
Refinery contractors, shutdown companies, plant EHS teams and offshore service firms send groups on short courses that fit between jobs. A half-day course is easy to place next to a longer programme.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Asked for where a process, line or gas stream may contain hydrogen sulphide; confirm for your site. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Often paired with H2S for turnaround supervisors and permit receivers. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | For offshore crew working on warm-water platforms with sour gas. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Our campus is at Njarakkal on Vypin island. The flight from Mumbai takes about two hours, so a half-day course normally means one night in Kochi.
Land the evening before rather than relying on a morning flight.
The airport is about 40 km from Njarakkal by taxi; from Ernakulam Junction the Goshree bridges bring you to Vypin in about 15 km.
Fly in the evening before, take the half-day course, and fly home that evening or the next morning. Ask our team for batch dates that suit.
If you are travelling for a three-day induction, ask whether the H2S half day can be placed before or after it in the same stay. That saves a flight.
Complete the medical questionnaire first. The theory exam has an online option; the practical covers the escape set, detector use and a simulated rescue.
Valid for two years. Set a reminder ahead of your next shutdown season.
