Gas plant and sulphur recovery unit operators
They work in the units where acid gas is separated and converted, and run the tail gas treatment.
Karan, Hasbah and Arabiyah are non-associated gas fields in the Gulf, and the plants that receive their gas sit on the coast near Jubail. Karan is about 160 km north of Dhahran in 40 to 60 metres of water, with five wellhead platforms and 21 wells designed for 1.8 billion cubic feet a day. A 110 km subsea pipeline brings the gas to the Khursaniyah plant, about 50 km north-west of Jubail, and Offshore Technology records that three trains of 600 million cubic feet a day were added because existing capacity was not enough for Karan's sour gas. Gas began flowing in July 2011.
Wasit, which began operations in October 2015, is designed to process only non-associated gas, much of it from the offshore Hasbah and Arabiyah fields. Saudipedia lists its capacity as 2.5 billion standard cubic feet a day and its sulphur output as 4,800 tonnes of molten sulphur a day, with recovery of up to 99.3 per cent. MEED's profile of the Arabiyah and Hasbah programme describes four sulphur recovery units of 1,200 tonnes a day each. Aramco's own page for Fadhili says the plant reached its design capacity of 2.5 bscfd in 2021 and recovers about 99.9 per cent of sulphur with tail gas treatment, taking gas from Hasbah offshore and Khursaniyah onshore. Offshore Technology gives its sulphur output as 4,000 tonnes a day, and MEED reports an expansion adding about 1.5 bcf/d and 2,300 tonnes a day of sulphur, expected by November 2027.
Further inland, Jafurah is the unconventional gas development about 400 km east of Riyadh. Samsung Engineering's first gas treatment package covers 1.1 bcf/d and includes an acid gas removal unit, with sulphur among its products. Sulphur is a commercial product here too: Saudipedia records a 2014 arrangement for Aramco to supply molten sulphur to Ma'aden at 1.78 million tonnes a year.
We did not find a public Aramco standard that sets out an H2S training rule, so we do not claim one. Operators and contractors write their own requirements into the contract and site induction.

Design capacity of 2.5 bscfd reached in 2021; about 99.9 per cent sulphur recovery, per Aramco.

They work in the units where acid gas is separated and converted, and run the tail gas treatment.
Offshore gas is raw at the platform and travels by subsea pipeline to the plant.
They open lines and receive pigs from pipelines that carried sour gas.
The Fadhili expansion and similar projects bring construction and commissioning crews to plants that handle live gas.
They handle gas and liquid samples from several streams in a shift.
They are the ones who respond when a detector alarms.
Start with where you will physically work. If your next site is a processing plant or sulphur unit, Basic H2S is the course that matches the hazard. If it is a Karan or Hasbah platform, the three-day T-BOSIET (or BOSIET with EBS if your client names the standard version) comes first, because without it you cannot make the transfer, and Basic H2S is the half-day addition that makes sense in the same trip. For permit holders and supervisors in turnaround work, Permit to Work is the other half of the picture. OPITO's standard has no prerequisite apart from a medical screening form before the practical exercises, so first-timers and renewers take the same course.
You will travel to an offshore wellhead platform and need the tropical induction as well.
Your client names the standard BOSIET, or you may be moved to non-tropical waters.
You issue, receive or close permits on live sour-gas units.
OPITO allows four guided learning hours. The classroom part is followed by exercises with gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty rescue, and a medical questionnaire is completed first. Assessment is a theory exam, with an online option, and a practical evaluation.
How the gas behaves, which matters in a plant where it is present in feed gas, acid gas and sulphur-handling areas.
How exposure affects the body. OSHA lists loss of smell after 2 to 15 minutes at around 100 ppm, and NIOSH says smell cannot be relied on as a warning.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring systems. Benchmarks include OSHA's 20 ppm ceiling and ten-minute 50 ppm peak, and NIOSH's 10 ppm ceiling.
Using the set correctly and quickly, with the pressure of a real alarm in mind.
What to do when a detector alarms or a colleague is affected, including a casualty rescue.
Contractors working at the gas plants, pipeline companies, inspection firms and manning agencies in Dammam and Al Khobar buy H2S training. Because plants are expanding while running, contractors need many people certified in the same window, and the expiry dates are staggered.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Sour-gas sites commonly ask staff to hold H2S awareness before access. Track the two-year validity on its own cycle. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Booked for platform crews alongside H2S awareness; confirm which version the client names. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | A fit for supervisors; as an iMost certificate it is accepted only if your client says so. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
King Fahd International Airport (DMM) serves Dammam. Flight-comparison sites list direct services to Cochin International Airport (COK) at about 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 25 minutes, and one-stop options via Indian cities. The campus is on Vypin island, 40 to 45 km from Kochi airport.
Air India Express and IndiGo are listed; frequencies change by season.
Jubail is about 87 km and under an hour from Dammam by road. If you finish a shift at a plant, drive to Dammam the day before.
A prepaid taxi from the airport reaches Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, via the Goshree bridges.
A half day adds little to a Kerala trip, and many people place it at either end of leave. Two nights in Kochi can cover it on a short break.
If your passport is Indian, you do not need a visa for India. For other passports, check the e-Visa category on the official portal or with the nearest Indian mission.
