Plant operators and panel operators
They respond when a fixed detector alarms and must know what to put on, where to go and who to warn.
Shah is the example people quote. The field is onshore, about 180 km south-west of Abu Dhabi, and its gas is reported at more than 23 per cent hydrogen sulphide, which makes it one of the most sour gas fields operating anywhere. The plant is run by Adnoc Sour Gas, owned 60 per cent by ADNOC and 40 per cent by Occidental, and it has four sulphur recovery units and a sulphur granulation package rated at 11,000 tonnes a day. At that scale, a worker is not just near the gas, they are near the equipment that exists to take the gas apart.
Habshan is older and broader. ADNOC Gas describes the Habshan complex as five plants and 14 processing trains with 6.1 bscfd of capacity, producing sales gas, NGLs, condensate and sulphur. A 1997 Oil and Gas Journal account puts the complex some 150 km south-west of Abu Dhabi city and gives its original Thammama gas at 0.5 to 4 per cent H2S, a reminder that sour does not mean one single concentration. ADNOC Gas is also tendering Habshan 7, a further train, so shutdown and construction crews will keep arriving.
Then the sulphur travels. MEED reported in May 2025 that the second sulphur handling terminal at Ruwais receives about 22,000 tonnes a day of solid granules from Habshan and about 11,000 tonnes a day from the Shah sulphur station by Etihad Rail, and that ADNOC Gas was tendering to raise the terminal's capacity to 27,000 tonnes a day. Granulated sulphur is a different hazard from sour gas, but H2S is the reason the product exists and it can collect around storage and loading. Rail loaders, terminal operators, laboratory staff and the contractors who maintain them are all on the same chain.

A further processing train under tender, bringing more shutdown and construction work to the complex.
Receive granulated sulphur from Habshan and, by Etihad Rail, from the Shah sulphur station.

The product moves through a chain of handling points, each with its own routines for gas monitoring and escape.
They calibrate and bump-test the detectors everyone else relies on, often in alarm-prone areas.
Opening equipment that has been in sour service is a normal part of a shutdown, and contractors arrive from many employers.
Sampling points on sour streams are small, frequent exposure points that are easy to overlook.
They walk the site on short visits and should understand the alarms and escape routes before they enter a unit.
Basic H2S teaches the gas, the detectors and the escape set. It does not cover helicopter escape, sea survival or permit systems, so it sits beside the other courses instead of replacing them. If your contractor sends you to an offshore island or barge as well as a plant, you may need a survival course in addition. If you issue or receive permits for work on sour lines, permit training is a separate subject. Because H2S is a half-day course, the practical way to buy it is as an add-on to a longer visit, or as a standalone trip for someone whose certificate lapsed before a shutdown.
You will also travel to offshore islands or barges, where the three-day OPITO 5501 survival course is the usual first question.
You request or receive permits for hot work and confined space entry on lines that may contain sour product.
Your site handles several hazardous substances and you want a broader view than one gas.
You supervise a crew and want the half-day first aid course for casualties before help arrives.
Classroom theory is followed by practical work with gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty rescue. There are two assessments: a theory exam, with an online option, and a practical assessment. A medical questionnaire is completed before the course starts.
Where the gas comes from and how it behaves. On a site with a sulphur recovery unit, this is the reason the unit exists.
OSHA lists nausea and eye tearing at 2 to 5 ppm and rapid knockdown at 700 to 1,000 ppm. The module explains why a worker can be affected before an alarm is understood.
Donning and using the escape set correctly, which is the skill you practise instead of reading about it.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring systems. You learn what an alarm means and what each level asks you to do, whichever site you work at.
What to do in a leak or exposure, including the casualty rescue scenario with a simulated casualty.

Sour-gas work in Abu Dhabi runs on contractors: EPC firms on new trains, shutdown companies, rail and terminal operators, inspection firms and manning agencies. They are usually asked for H2S evidence at mobilisation, and the date on the certificate is checked as closely as the name.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Commonly asked for before access to sour-gas units. Check that the certificate will still be in date on the mobilisation day. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Often paired with H2S for shutdown supervisors. This is an iMost certificate, so confirm acceptance with your client. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | For crew who also work offshore or on islands. The client decides between the tropical and standard versions. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Zayed International Airport (AUH) to Cochin International Airport (COK) takes about four hours on a direct flight. The campus is on Vypin island, about 40 to 45 km from the airport. Plan one night in Kochi for a standalone course.
Etihad, Air Arabia, Air India Express and IndiGo are listed on this route. Schedules change by season, so check the airline.
Shah is about 180 km and Habshan about 150 km south-west of Abu Dhabi city, and Ruwais lies further west. Plan to reach the city the evening before an early flight.
A pre-booked taxi crosses the Goshree bridges to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal. Allow an hour or more.
Abu Dhabi time is 1 hour 30 minutes behind India. A half-day course needs only one night in Kochi, so it is easy to add to the start or end of a family visit to Kerala.
Indian passport holders do not need a visa for India. Other nationalities should check which e-Visa category applies on indianvisaonline.gov.in, since eligibility depends on nationality.
The fee is ₹12,500 per person, quoted in INR. Confirm the currency and payment method with our team before sending money from the UAE.
If your certificate lapses before the next shutdown, book now. Some sites check the date on the day you arrive.
Send your leave dates to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307. Batches run regularly; ask for current dates.
A standalone trip is one night in Kochi. If you also need T-BOSIET, ask whether the half day can sit before or after it so you fly once.
The medical questionnaire comes first. The theory exam has an online option; the practical is in person.
Send it to your employer and set a reminder for the two-year renewal, ahead of your next shutdown season.
