Island and platform maintenance technicians
Mechanical, electrical and instrument staff on rotation to island-based facilities are among the first to be asked for a survival certificate.
Four artificial islands in the Upper Zakum field were built by NMDC for ZADCO, an ADNOC subsidiary, in water six to thirteen metres deep. The contract was worth AED 2.3 billion, and the islands came with a turnkey camp for 1,000 people, a quay wall and four ports. A worker on such an island is surrounded by sea but sleeps in a camp, so the practical question for each job is how you get there and what the contractor asks you to hold before you board.
The islands are one model. ADNOC Offshore operates the Umm Shaif and Nasr and the Lower Zakum concessions, with Umm Shaif reported about 135 km and Lower Zakum about 65 km off the coast, and artificial islands have been developed at the Satah Al Razboot fields. ADNOC Logistics and Services reported owning 39 jack-up barges in September 2023 and, in 2024, bought two accommodation barges that each house 300 crew. Crews on such vessels can be reassigned between fields, so the certificate version matters.
T-BOSIET suits this setting because the Arabian Gulf is a warm-water region and OPITO describes the course for a tropical environment. But Abu Dhabi's concessions have international partners, and what each project's contract names is the only reliable guide. Ask the contractor before you book, and never assume that a certificate accepted on one job is accepted on the next.
Four artificial islands, central island 1,200 m by 600 m, completed by 2014 for ZADCO.
Operated by ADNOC Offshore; Umm Shaif lies around 135 km and Lower Zakum about 65 km from the coast.
Artificial islands developed with up to 44 wells each at the SARB 1 and 2 fields.
39 jack-up barges as of September 2023, plus accommodation barges for 300 crew each.
Mechanical, electrical and instrument staff on rotation to island-based facilities are among the first to be asked for a survival certificate.
Deck crew, engineers and riggers move between fields and need sea survival and fire-fighting competence on every vessel.
Catering, housekeeping and medical staff living offshore need the same emergency training as the technical crew they serve.
People working on offshore structures and island works face boat transfers and heavy marine equipment.
They visit sites on tight schedules and cannot join a transfer without the certificate.
T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501) and BOSIET with EBS (5700) both cost ₹35,000 and take three days. The tropical course leaves out the immersion suit and covers hyperthermia instead, which suits Gulf summers. The standard course is what many international operators and North Sea employers name. Abu Dhabi contractors who also bid for work outside the tropics sometimes hold both over time. For one posting, match the course to the contract's wording.
Choose it if the project documents say OPITO 5700 or the employer plans to move you outside tropical regions.
Consider it when leave is short; the theory moves online and our team will explain the practical day.
Renewal for T-BOSIET holders; OPITO says it must be completed within four years of the T-BOSIET.
Relevant when the only gap in your record is helicopter underwater escape.
Continuous assessment by OPITO-approved instructors runs through every practical exercise, and you must demonstrate competence in each before a certificate is issued.
Offshore hazards, risk controls, safety legislation and management systems. On an island this is the routine you will meet again in the site induction.
Brace positions, emergency procedures and getting out of a capsized, submerged helicopter, practised on the Modular Egress Training Simulator in an indoor pool.
Tropical sea survival techniques, lifejackets and life rafts, hyperthermia and basic first aid, relevant when a boat transfer to a barge goes wrong.
Fire prevention, portable extinguishers and escape from smoke on a dedicated fire ground, which are the skills needed in a generator hall or accommodation module.
Buyers here include marine construction firms, jack-up and support vessel operators, island facility contractors and manning agencies. The tender or contractor HSE plan states what must be held before mobilisation, and the language of those documents, not our course page, decides what is acceptable.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly requested for Gulf offshore work; confirm that the project accepts 5501 before moving a team onto it. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Named by some operators and for rotations outside tropical waters. |
| Basic H2S Training | Frequently asked of crews working on sour-gas assets. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Zayed International Airport (AUH) sends direct flights to Cochin International Airport (COK), a flight of about four hours. From COK it is a drive of around 40 km to the campus on Vypin island.
Route listings show Etihad, Air Arabia, Air India Express and IndiGo; schedules change with the season, so confirm with the carrier.
Expect a car ride of an hour or more from COK; the Goshree bridges bring you onto Vypin.
Indian time is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Abu Dhabi. Where you can, attach the course to a home leave in Kerala so the trip costs one flight instead of two.
For an Indian passport no visa is needed. Other passports usually need an e-Visa or regular visa, so confirm the category on the official portal before booking flights.
Our price is per person in rupees, and payment from the UAE is generally an international transfer; ask our team which reference to use.
Get the exact OPITO code and its validity rule from the project HSE team in writing.
Island and barge rotations leave a block of time at home. Choose a batch that fits it and book flights only after our team confirms dates.
Three days of training with a travel day each end and a spare day for delays.
A half-day Basic H2S course can ride on the same trip if the sequencing works; our team can check.
Note the 4-year expiry, share the certificate with your employer and book the refresher early.
