Process engineers at EPC and consultancy offices
They prepare the P&IDs and cause-and-effect charts the team reviews, and must defend design choices in the room.
HAZOP stands for hazard and operability study. A facilitator leads a team through the piping and instrumentation diagrams of a plant, splitting the design into short sections called nodes. For each node the team applies guide words such as no, more, less and reverse to process parameters like flow and pressure, writes down credible causes and consequences, and records the safeguards already in the design. Anything that looks thin becomes an action with an owner. The method is described in an international standard, IEC 61882, which is the usual reference for how a session should be set up and recorded.
Abu Dhabi has a great deal of the kind of plant that gets studied this way. Borouge 4 at Ruwais was reported as a USD 6.2 billion expansion let in five EPC packages, including a 1.5 million tonne a year ethane cracker and two polyethylene plants of 700,000 tonnes a year each. Every new unit of that kind passes through design reviews long before steel arrives, and older units are revisited when they are modified. Each review needs several disciplines in the room, and many of them have never recorded a session.
The regulatory picture is worth stating plainly. We went through the public index of ADOSH-SF codes of practice, which runs from 1.0 Hazardous Materials to 54.0 Waste Management and includes permit to work and hot work, and found no code titled process safety or HAZOP. ADNOC's 2024 sustainability report says contractors account for over 75 per cent of hours worked and states a goal of eliminating serious process safety events. In practice the demand for HAZOP skills comes from the client specification and the project HSE plan, not from one public rule, so this course is pitched as preparation for taking part. Your employer decides whether a certificate is needed.

They are the people who know how the unit behaves at start-up and during trips, which is what the guide words probe.
Many safeguards are trips, alarms and relief devices, and the team needs someone who can say what they really do.
They can tell the team which valve sticks and which line is hard to isolate, facts that never appear on a drawing.
They are asked to sit in, challenge the risk ranking and make sure the actions list is closed out.
HAZOP is a design and review method. It looks at a process on paper, before or between operations, and asks what could go wrong with the system as drawn. The other iMost courses deal with what people do on the day: how work is authorised, how energy is isolated, how an incident is written up. A study leaves an actions list that someone must turn into work, which is where permit to work and isolation come in. Choose HAZOP when your role is to prepare for, take part in or follow up a study, and the others when you carry out the work it produced. A half-day course gives awareness of the method; it does not make anyone a qualified chair, and it does not replace the facilitator your client appoints.
Your task is to issue or hold the permits that apply a HAZOP action on a live unit.
A study action calls for better isolation points and your team must apply them during maintenance.
You are working backwards from an event and need to find causes, not review a design before it runs.
You need a general risk method for task or workplace assessments rather than process deviations.
The programme is interactive classroom teaching with a worked walkthrough and a simulated session. Delegates sit a written test, show the method in a demonstration and answer oral questions before an iMost certificate is issued. It is not an OPITO course, and we have not been given a published expiry for it, so ask our team what the certificate shows.
Purpose, history of the method and the basics of risk assessment. Useful for engineers who have attended sessions but never been told why the worksheet looks as it does.
The stages of a study, the roles of team members and how to prepare for a session. This is the module that answers who sits where, and what the chair and the scribe do.
Applying words such as no, more, less and reverse to flow, pressure and temperature, and judging which deviations are credible. A sour-gas line and a polyethylene reactor will not give the same list.
A practical walkthrough using piping and instrumentation diagrams, then recording findings and recommendations so that each action can be assigned and closed.
Examples from different industries and a simulated session where delegates take turns in the seats, which is the nearest thing to practice before a real study.
Training is bought by engineering contractors preparing design teams, by operators' HSE and process departments, and by manning and consultancy firms that second people into project offices. A company can send engineers, operations staff and HSE officers together, so that the first time they meet the method is not in front of the client.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Teams who turn study actions into work often need permit competence as well. The certificate is from iMost, so your client decides whether it counts. |
| Incident Investigation Training | Investigators and HSE staff frequently sit in HAZOP follow-up meetings; this half-day iMost course covers the investigation side. |
| Basic H2S Training | Studies of sour-gas facilities are attended by people who also need H2S awareness at site. It is an OPITO course valid for 2 years. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
From Zayed International Airport (AUH) the direct service to Cochin (COK) takes roughly four hours. The campus is on Vypin island, about 40 km from the Kochi airport by road, and you cross the Goshree bridges to reach it.
Etihad, Air Arabia, Air India Express and IndiGo turn up in route listings. Check the current schedule with the airline, since timings change by season.
From the Corniche or Al Reem Island, allow about 45 minutes to Zayed airport outside peak traffic; from Mussafah or KEZAD, longer. Leave margin for check-in.
A prepaid taxi or app cab covers the last leg, usually an hour or a little more. Use a map app for live timing.
A half-day course adds one night to a trip home, because you fly in the day before. Many people place it on the first or last day of a break in Kerala, which saves a separate trip. India is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of the UAE.
If you hold an Indian passport, no visa is needed for India. Holders of other passports should check which e-Visa category applies to their nationality on the official portal before booking flights.
Fees are quoted in Indian rupees per person. Ask our team how to pay from the UAE before you transfer, and keep the receipt for your accounts department.
Ask your project lead if you will be a participant, a scribe or an owner of actions. That decides how much of the course matters to you.
Write to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307 with your days off. The fee is quoted on request and batches run regularly.
A half day leaves time in the same stay for Permit to Work or Incident Investigation, which suit the people who follow up a study.
Take the direct flight, arrive the evening before, and report on the morning given by our team.
A P&ID sketch from your own project makes the walkthrough use lines you actually know.
