Vendor and commissioning specialists
A pump, turbine or control-system visit to an island or platform is a short helicopter trip with no overnight stay, so the operator may ask only for the escape skill.
Abu Dhabi's offshore work is reached through island bases, and the way people get there varies by leg. Falcon Aviation Services began scheduled turboprop flights in 2015 from Abu Dhabi Bateen to Das Island and Zirku Island for ADMA-OPCO, at three flights a day and about 400 passengers daily, according to ch-aviation. A turboprop seat to an island needs no helicopter escape skill. The helicopter is the next leg, from an island or heliport to a platform, barge or rig, and that is where operators look for HUET.
The helicopter side is large. Gulf News describes Abu Dhabi Aviation as the largest commercial helicopter operator in the Middle East, with 58 aircraft including 51 helicopters, and attributed its 2022 revenue growth partly to additional oil and gas offshore flights. The company says it was formed in 1976 to support the offshore oil industry. So a steady stream of engineers, inspectors and vendor specialists are passengers on short trips, without being offshore workers in the long-stay sense.
That gap is why a one-day course has a real place here. A person who goes out for a day or two does not need the induction, first aid and fire modules of a three-day course if the client has not asked for them, and may already hold other training. Whether the operator accepts HUET alone is the client's decision. We found no public ADNOC document that names T-HUET as a rule, so get the requirement in writing from your contract or the visitor procedure.
There is a catch. T-HUET is the tropical form, written for warm-water regions, and some contracts name the standard HUET with the emergency breathing system. If your visit could be to cooler waters, or you are asked for a specific variant, check before you book. OPITO also lists a T-HUET variant with initial sea survival, and a separate standard for adding emergency breathing system training to T-BOSIET and T-HUET.

Falcon Aviation's 2015 turboprop service for ADMA-OPCO ran three flights a day for about 400 passengers; it is the aircraft before the helicopter leg.
Two mandatory units and a four-year certificate; OPITO sets the guided learning at 8 hours 20 minutes.
OPITO lists a version with initial sea survival and an emergency breathing system add-on, so ask which one the client means.
A pump, turbine or control-system visit to an island or platform is a short helicopter trip with no overnight stay, so the operator may ask only for the escape skill.
STCW basic training covers personal survival and fire fighting, so a helicopter crew change may be the only gap. Whether the client accepts that mix is for the client to say.
They fly out to look at facilities across several operators, so each trip needs a helicopter passenger credential and little else.
A site walk twice a year is a poor reason to spend three days training when the operator accepts one.
They decide who goes on which course, and a split roster of T-BOSIET and T-HUET can save days and fees.
First, how long do you stay offshore? If you live on an installation, take the three-day T-BOSIET (5501), because T-HUET has no induction, first aid or fire-fighting content. Second, what do you already hold? A valid T-BOSIET or T-FOET already contains the helicopter escape module, so adding T-HUET repeats it. Third, what does the contract name? Tropical T-HUET suits warm water; the standard HUET with EBS is the one cooler-water operators usually write down. OPITO's T-HUET page lists no prior certificate as an entry condition, but fitness must be shown before the pool work. The operator and the helicopter company decide what a passenger holds, so treat this as a map and the paperwork as the answer.
You will stay on an installation, or the contract says T-BOSIET or asks for first aid and fire fighting as well.
The client names the standard version with the emergency breathing system, or you may be posted outside warm water.
You hold a valid T-BOSIET and want to renew it; the full refresher includes the helicopter escape you need.
A short briefing leads into pool drills, with a cabin simulator standing in for the helicopter. Instructors assess every exercise as you go.
Wearing and inflating the aviation life jacket and obeying the crew's emergency calls, the routine you meet at every boarding.
Leaving the aircraft in a controlled emergency on dry land, and then exiting during a water ditching.
Getting out of a partly submerged or capsized helicopter, including the use of push-out windows. This is the exercise people remember.
Getting into an aviation life raft, keeping it serviceable and supporting other survivors.
Using the spray visor and managing your equipment before, during and after a ditching.
Companies that send visitors offshore usually run a mixed roster: some people stay on an installation and some only fly out and back. Buying the right course for each group is a planning decision, and getting it wrong costs either days of leave or a refused boarding.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) | Asked for when the person is a helicopter passenger only. Confirm with the operator, in writing, before you buy. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Named when the person stays on an installation, or when the contract lists induction, first aid and fire as well. |
| Helicopter Underwater Escape Training with EBS (HUET with EBS) | The standard variant for operators that do not use the tropical standard. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Nonstop services link Zayed International (AUH) with Cochin International (COK) in roughly four hours. From there the campus on Vypin island is around 40 km by road, and about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction.
Four carriers show up in route listings: Etihad, Air Arabia, Air India Express and IndiGo. Choose a flight that lands in the evening, and recheck the timetable close to the date.
Book a taxi or app cab to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal. The route crosses the Goshree bridges, so allow more than an hour.
India is an hour and a half ahead of the UAE, so the clock barely matters. The usual pattern is to land one evening, train the next day and fly back the following morning, which suits a long weekend or a handful of days off.
If you travel on an Indian passport, you can enter India without a visa. Holders of other passports should read the e-Visa categories on the government portal before paying for a ticket.
Course fees are in rupees for each person. Confirm the payment route from the UAE with our team before you transfer, and keep the receipt for your company records.
Get the written requirement: T-HUET, T-BOSIET or the standard variant, plus any expiry date you already hold.
Message +91 8075 787307 or write to info@imostacademy.in with the days you can spare. Batches run regularly, so ask for current dates.
Land the day before, with passport, medical evidence and swimwear in your cabin bag.
A briefing, then the pool drills. OPITO allows 8 hours 20 minutes of guided learning, so expect a full day rather than a half one.
Leave the next morning if you want a margin. Send the certificate to your office and diarise the fourth anniversary.
