Junior officers and ratings moving from ships to offshore support or rig jobs
Their STCW safety training covers survival and fire at sea. The helicopter is the new element, and one day of escape training targets it.
Pawan Hans, which uses Juhu aerodrome as its hub, carries ONGC personnel from there to the Bombay High platforms. A Navi Mumbai resident who boards one of those flights starts the day with a long drive: routing data puts Vashi about 25 km from Juhu by road and CBD Belapur about 31 km. Navi Mumbai's own airport, which opened for commercial flights on 25 December 2025, lies roughly 35 km from the older Mumbai airport and is described as having a planned heliport, but we found nothing to say that offshore crew transfers fly from it. The practical point is that the people who need T-HUET here do not work at the heliport. They are posted to it by an employer elsewhere.
Who they are is shaped by what Navi Mumbai is. It has a government maritime university campus at Nerul and the Belapur and Vashi belt of crewing agencies, so the city produces mariners who already hold sea-going safety certificates. Seafarers normally complete the STCW basic safety package, which includes personal survival and fire-fighting elements with a five-yearly refresher, as the IMO notes. For such a person the missing piece before a rig or platform posting is often the helicopter, not the whole induction.
Uran and the port belt supply the other group. ONGC's plant at Uran is where Mumbai High production comes ashore, and the neighbouring port and power plant employ operators, inspectors and technicians who are not offshore workers. Occasionally a work order covers a shutdown at the terminal and an inspection on a platform. That worker may need a helicopter seat for two days a year, which raises the question of whether a three-day induction makes sense.
T-HUET is built for exactly these people. OPITO describes it for personnel who are new, or returning, and who will travel to and from offshore installations by helicopter in a tropical environment. Delegates show they can use the safety equipment, follow the procedures for helicopter emergencies and escape after ditching, and demonstrate sea survival techniques. Whether your employer treats it as enough, or still asks for the full T-BOSIET, is the single most important question to settle before you book.
Pawan Hans's hub and the base for Mumbai's helicopter operations; ONGC personnel are flown from there to Bombay High.
Commercial flights began on 25 December 2025; about 35 km from the older airport, with Akasa Air and IndiGo serving Kochi.
The university's Navi Mumbai campus trains nautical cadets who build sea-going safety certificates before any offshore move.
A four-year certificate resting on two mandatory units and 8 hours 20 minutes of guided learning.
Their STCW safety training covers survival and fire at sea. The helicopter is the new element, and one day of escape training targets it.
Most of their work is onshore. A platform visit once or twice a year is better matched by a one-day course than by an induction they rarely use in full.
They fly out for a day to inspect, sign off or audit. They need to be able to leave a ditched helicopter, and little else offshore.
A lapsed certificate means starting again. Check whether you also need the rest of the induction before choosing the one-day option.
Short campaigns pay for a helicopter seat and rarely for a full course. The employer must say which certificate it needs.
Ask the work order two questions: where is the field, and what does the contract name? For a warm-water field such as the western offshore, T-HUET is the tropical helicopter-only course, one day at ₹25,000, and T-BOSIET adds the safety induction, fire-fighting, self-rescue and first aid over three days for ₹35,000. The extra ₹10,000 buys the broader induction. If the contract names HUET with EBS, you need the standard version with the emergency breathing system, not the tropical one. If you already hold a valid T-BOSIET or T-FOET, your helicopter training is already covered and you do not need T-HUET.
The contract names it, or you are new to offshore work and will stay on platforms. It runs three days at ₹35,000 (OPITO 5501) and lasts four years.
The client is outside the tropical regions or asks for the standard version with a breathing system. OPITO 5095, one day, ₹25,000.
You already hold a valid T-BOSIET or T-FOET and the certificate is nearing its four-year end. OPITO 5614, one day, ₹25,000.
International or North Sea work, where the standard induction is commonly named. OPITO 5700, three days, ₹35,000.
Theory comes first, then supervised practice. Helicopter escape and sea survival are rehearsed in an indoor pool, using a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and instructors judge each exercise as it happens against the OPITO standard.
How to put on and inflate the jacket, and why you follow the crew's briefing exactly. On a flight to a western offshore platform, you sit through a safety brief that is the same every time, so we teach what it is for.
Leaving the aircraft quickly and calmly in an emergency on land or on a deck. Many offshore flights involve helideck landings, so this is the realistic case.
Brace positions, waiting for motion to stop, then escape from a partially submerged or capsized cabin using push-out windows. The simulator is turned over in the pool so you meet the disorientation under controlled conditions.
Getting into an aviation life raft, keeping it in working order and helping other survivors until rescue arrives. In warm Arabian Sea conditions the issues are exposure to sun and fatigue, not cold.
Spray visor and managing emergency gear before, during and after ditching. Spectacle wearers learn why a retaining strap matters.
Buyers include contractors at the Uran and port belt, marine survey and inspection firms, ship managers and manning agents in Belapur and Vashi, and the HSE teams of firms whose people occasionally fly offshore. A one-day course is easy to fit around a duty roster.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) | For personnel who need helicopter escape and sea survival only. Confirm with the client that this alone meets the contract. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Often the certificate named for warm-water offshore work, since it includes tropical helicopter escape and the other induction elements. |
| Helicopter Underwater Escape Training with EBS (HUET with EBS) | For clients that name the standard version with the emergency breathing system. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
One day of training still needs two travel days, because 1,300 km is a flight, not a drive. The usual plan is an evening flight in, the course the next day, and a flight back that evening or the morning after.
Akasa Air and IndiGo list Kochi from the new airport. The airport has an interchange with the Port Line at Targhar and sits on National Highway 348 near Panvel, which makes it a short trip from Ulwe, Kharghar and Panvel.
Kochi is listed by Air India and IndiGo from the older airport. For people in Vashi or Nerul the choice between NMI and BOM comes down to timings and fares, so compare both.
From Cochin International Airport the campus is about 40 km by road. Pre-book a taxi, and ask our team about places to stay near the campus if you land late.
Ask the client whether T-HUET alone meets the contract. If the answer is unclear, keep the T-BOSIET option open.
Choose one of the accepted evidence routes and keep a copy. If you take regular medication, tell the instructor on arrival.
Share your name, destination field and certificate expiry date with info@imostacademy.in or on WhatsApp at +91 8075 787307. Batches run regularly.
Land by evening, eat lightly and rest; the pool session is physical.
Brief, then practice in the simulator, then assessment. Return that night if flights allow, or fly out the next morning.
