OPITO 5501 for marine and offshore staff in Sharjah

T-BOSIET Course for Sharjah Marine and Offshore Crew

Most of Sharjah's energy industry sits on land, which makes the question for a Sharjah worker simple: will my next job take me out to sea? If it will, in warm Gulf waters, the three-day T-BOSIET is the OPITO tropical survival course. This page covers who in Sharjah and Hamriyah needs it, how it differs from the standard BOSIET, and the flight from Sharjah airport to Kochi.

Where Sharjah work meets the sea

Sharjah National Oil Corporation runs the Sajaa assets, which include producing gas fields at Sajaa and Kahaif, the Mahani field with Eni (first well on stream in January 2021) and a gas storage reservoir at Moveyeid. That is onshore work, and a plant operator there is more likely to need H2S awareness than helicopter escape. The sea enters at Hamriyah, where the condensate terminal loads tankers through a single buoy mooring about 15 km off the coast and an LPG terminal has its own jetty inside the port.

Hamriyah Port and Free Zone is also where Sharjah's marine fabrication is growing. The free zone authority promotes shipbuilding, repair and offshore fabrication, and a 162,000 square foot facility announced in November 2024 is planned for repairs at anchor and for structures used offshore, subsea and in wind farms. Workers who fabricate parts for offshore jobs are sometimes sent to install or inspect them, and that is when a survival certificate is requested.

On the Gulf coast in Sharjah city, Port Khalid has more than 21 berths and lists dry dock, bunkering and ship repair among its marine services. Sailors, repair crews and port staff here may be assigned to vessels that work offshore. Whichever side of the emirate you work on, T-BOSIET is the tropical option when your client's contract names OPITO 5501.

Sajaa gas assets (SNOC)

Gas fields at Sajaa, Kahaif and Mahani feed a processing complex, with Moveyeid used for gas storage.

Hamriyah condensate terminal

Tankers load through a single buoy mooring about 15 km offshore.

Hamriyah Free Zone marine cluster

Shipbuilding, repair and offshore fabrication are promoted by the free zone authority.

Port Khalid

More than 21 berths, with dry dock, bunkering and ship repair listed as marine services.

Sharjah roles that may need a T-BOSIET

Offshore fabrication and installation crew from Hamriyah

Structures built in the free zone may travel to a site where the crew must follow offshore access rules.

Vessel crew serving terminals and offshore work

Deck hands and engineers on tugs, supply boats and tender craft often have to show sea survival and fire-fighting competence.

Plant technicians on rotation to offshore fields

A Sharjah technician posted to a Gulf offshore platform for a contractor will normally be asked for the survival certificate first.

New entrants moving from a shore job

You do not need offshore experience, only medical fitness for the practical exercises.

T-BOSIET or the standard BOSIET for a Sharjah worker

T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501) is the tropical course for warm-water operations, and it is the right match when your contract names it and the work stays in Gulf waters. The standard BOSIET with EBS (5700) is what many international operators ask for, so a Sharjah employee who might be sent beyond the tropics should check before choosing. Both cost the same ₹35,000 and last three days. The client's contract decides which code you need.

Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) →

Pick it if the client or a future employer names OPITO 5700 or works outside tropical regions.

Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) →

Worth asking about when leave is tight; part of the learning is online and our team will explain the practical part.

Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) →

The refresher for people nearing the end of the 4 years, since OPITO says the T-FOET must be completed within four years of the T-BOSIET.

Basic H2S Training →

Add Basic H2S (OPITO 9014, half a day, ₹12,500, valid 2 years) if you also work around gas and condensate.

The four T-BOSIET modules in a Sharjah context

OPITO-approved instructors assess each exercise against the standard. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in a controlled indoor pool using a Modular Egress Training Simulator.

  1. 01

    Safety Induction

Offshore hazards, safety legislation, management systems and who does what offshore. It helps you read the induction of any client, including the incident reporting duties that Sharjah employers already carry.

  2. 02

Helicopter Safety and Escape (Tropical HUET)

The hazards of helicopter travel in tropical regions, brace positions, and getting out of a helicopter that has capsized and sunk.

  3. 03

    Sea Survival and First Aid

You practise tropical sea survival without an immersion suit, plus lifejackets, life rafts, hyperthermia and basic first aid. Heat is the issue to understand for Gulf work.

  4. 04

    Fire Fighting and Self-Rescue

Fire hazards and prevention, portable extinguishers and self-rescue from smoke, all practised on a fire ground.

For Sharjah contractors, Hamriyah companies and manning teams

Training is usually bought by marine contractors, free-zone fabrication firms, vessel operators and agencies that second staff to clients elsewhere in the Gulf. Ask for the client's course code before you book a batch.

Standards that shape training in United Arab Emirates

Sharjah Occupational Safety and Health SystemExecutive Council Resolution 15 of 2021 applies to employers and employees in the emirate, and requires employers to investigate incidents and report to the Prevention and Safety Authority.

Plan your visit from Sharjah

Planning around home leave

Plan for five or six days door to door. India is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of the UAE, so time your first day with that in mind. If you are visiting family in Kerala, take the course at the beginning or end of the stay.

Visa and entry

An Indian passport does not need a visa for India. If you hold another passport, find out early which e-Visa or visa category applies to you on the official portal.

Costs and payment

Our fee is per person and in rupees. Many Sharjah residents pay by bank transfer, so ask our team to confirm the amount and the reference to quote.
