Gas-plant operators and maintenance technicians
Amine and sulphur units carry the gas by design, and an alarm in a unit like that is an event for the whole crew.
The Sajaa gas plant in Sharjah was designed around the gas this course teaches. Published project descriptions of the SajGas plant say it sweetens feed gas in two parallel trains of 300 million standard cubic feet a day each, using an amine process to bring hydrogen sulphide in the sweet gas down to 4 ppm or less. A Claus sulphur recovery unit with a design capacity of 350 tonnes a day converts the removed gas into elemental sulphur, which is degassed, formed into pastilles and loaded into road vehicles. Those are 2005 to 2007 design figures and we have not seen current operating data, but they show the shape of the work.
The people in between are a wide group. Operators and technicians work around the amine and sulphur units, while analyser and instrument technicians calibrate the detectors that guard them. Contractors arrive for maintenance and overhauls. Truck drivers and loaders handle the finished sulphur. The feed gas reaches the plant by a pipeline of about 85 km that the project description routes through Hamriyah, and the sweetened gas then goes to an LPG plant before the Northern Emirates grid. For each of these roles, the H2S course gives a shared baseline: what the gas does, how detectors report it and how to put on an escape set before you need it.
The second Sharjah setting is the Al Saja'a wastewater treatment plant. A 2019 account by the contractor says the plant takes about 30,000 cubic metres of sewage delivered by up to 1,600 tankers a day, dries the sludge and sends it to the Sharjah Cement Factory as fuel. Tanker discharge, screening, sludge handling and drying are all places where trapped gas can reach the people nearby. We have not found published gas readings for the plant and make no claim about them, but anyone who works around tanker reception or sludge tanks should know the symptoms and the escape routine.
Sharjah's regulator has published its own guidance on the closest legal topic. The Prevention and Safety Authority's code of practice OSHJ-CoP-06, Management of Confined Spaces (version 2, July 2024), lists sewers and tanks among confined spaces. It asks the entity to have the atmosphere tested by a competent person before entry, for oxygen, flammable gas and toxic gas, and to keep toxic gases below the permissible exposure limit. It also expects workers to be trained in permits, equipment and rescue. We found no Sharjah rule that names an H2S certificate, so ask your employer which one it accepts.
Project descriptions give two trains of 300 million standard cubic feet a day, amine sweetening to 4 ppm H2S or less, and a sulphur unit rated at 350 tonnes a day.
Liquid sulphur is degassed to below 10 ppm H2S in the design, formed into pastilles and loaded into road vehicles.
Receives about 30,000 cubic metres of sewage a day by up to 1,600 tankers, according to its 2019 contractor account; sludge goes to the Sharjah Cement Factory as fuel.
The authority's code of practice (July 2024) calls for atmosphere testing for oxygen, flammable gas and toxic gas before entry.

They test and calibrate the fixed and portable detectors that others trust, so they need to know exactly what a reading means.
Liquid sulphur and the vessels around it can release gas, and a driver who knows the warning signs will not wander towards a leak.
Tanker discharge at a wastewater plant releases gas from the load, and a busy station concentrates people in one place.
The attendant outside a tank or chamber must not rush in, and the course shows what rescue involves and where its limits lie.
They arrive on a time-limited contract and are the people whose site induction usually asks for proof of H2S awareness.
Basic H2S (OPITO 9014) is the course for recognising the gas, using detectors and escape sets, and carrying out a rescue. It does not teach entry rules. Confined spaces and hot work depend on the permit, so many supervisors add Permit to Work, an iMost certificate. If your posting goes offshore, the three-day T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501) comes first. A person who may need to treat a casualty until help arrives could add first aid, which is a different half-day skill.
You control or supervise entries to tanks, vessels and chambers, where the permit and gas test belong together.
Your next posting includes an offshore installation or a vessel working offshore.
You may be first on the scene for a collapsed colleague and want basic casualty care as well.
You complete a medical questionnaire before the practical work, then classroom teaching, then hands-on use of gas-detection equipment, escape breathing apparatus and a simulated casualty rescue. A theory exam, with an online option, and a practical evaluation close the session. OPITO sets four guided learning hours.
Where the gas comes from and how it behaves. In a sweetening plant it is the process stream, and in a sewage tanker it is a by-product of decay.
How exposure affects the body as concentration rises. Smell is an unreliable warning because it fades at higher levels.
Fitting and using the set correctly under time pressure, so that the first time you wear one is not an alarm.
Detectors, alarms and monitoring, including what a personal monitor can tell you in a tank or chamber and what it cannot.
The steps to take when an alarm sounds or someone goes down, including the simulated casualty rescue you practise.
A questionnaire you fill in before the start. Mention any health condition or regular medication to the instructor beforehand.
A theory exam, with an online option, plus a practical evaluation. Both must be passed for the certificate.
Buyers here are the HSE and training teams of gas and wastewater operators, maintenance and turnaround contractors, and agencies that place people on sites around the Gulf. A two-year certificate means renewals can be planned in batches rather than person by person.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic H2S Training | Often asked for before access to sour-gas facilities and on tank-cleaning and sewage work. Check the site's wording. |
| Permit to Work PTW System Training | Suits people who control entries. An iMost certificate, so confirm that your client agrees. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Needed in addition for postings that include an offshore installation. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) has nonstop flights to Cochin International Airport (COK) in about four hours. From COK the campus on Vypin island is about 40 km by road; from Ernakulam Junction it is about 15 km across the Goshree bridges.
Route listings show Air Arabia and Air India Express on this nonstop service. Schedules change by season, so check with the airline.
A second option with more daily services. Allow for the road leg between Sharjah and Dubai airport and for traffic on the Sharjah side.
Book a taxi ahead to Puthuval Road in Njarakkal. The drive takes about an hour.
A half-day course is easy to place at either end of a family trip to Kerala.
For an Indian passport no visa is needed to enter India. Holders of other passports should check which e-Visa category suits a short training course on the official portal, because eligibility depends on nationality.
Fees are in rupees for each person. Ask our team how to pay from the UAE before you transfer anything, and keep the receipt for your company's records.
Ask the HSE office which H2S certificate the site names and how recent it must be.
Write to info@imostacademy.in or message +91 8075 787307 with your days off and your role. Ask whether Permit to Work or another course can sit in the same trip.
It is done before the practical session. Declare any condition or medication.
Take the nonstop to Kochi and a taxi to your stay near Vypin. The clock moves 1 h 30 min ahead.
Classroom teaching, detector and breathing-apparatus practice, the casualty rescue, then the theory exam and practical evaluation.
Return next morning, send the certificate to your HSE office and note the two-year expiry.
