Technicians and tradespeople heading to Gulf oil and gas contractors
Electricians, fitters, welders and instrument technicians posted to platforms, jack-up rigs or marine facilities may be asked for the offshore induction as part of mobilisation.
Thrissur is a Gulf-linked district more than an offshore one. There is no rig or platform within reach, but families here have long sent workers to the Gulf, and the Kerala Migration Survey 2023, commissioned by the state's NORKA department, lists Thrissur among the districts with large numbers of emigrants and returnees. The people who write to us are electricians, mechanical technicians, welders, pipe-fitters, safety officers and marine staff who have been offered, or are applying for, jobs with Gulf contractors that support oil and gas fields and platforms.
T-BOSIET is OPITO's tropical version of the offshore induction, designed for warm-water regions. Its helicopter escape and sea survival exercises assume tropical conditions, which is why many operators and contractors working in the Arabian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal ask for it. Operators in cold-water regions, and some international clients, still specify standard BOSIET. The job offer or the client's induction document is what settles it.
The Thrissur coast has its own link to the water. Azhikode, in Kodungallur taluk, sits on the Periyar river mouth opposite Munambam on Vypin island, and a ferry crosses between them. Munambam, at the northern tip of Vypin, has the largest fishing harbour in Kochi. Anyone from that stretch of coast who works on boats and is moving into supply vessels or offshore support work is within a short hop of our campus, which is also on Vypin.
If you are returning from the Gulf on leave, treat T-BOSIET as a leave-time task. Landing at Cochin airport and going straight to the campus saves a trip, and the certificate is then in hand before you go home to Thrissur for the rest of your holiday.
About 71 km on the main Kerala line; aggregator timetables show a journey of roughly 1 h 50 min on the fastest trains.
Frequent services run along NH 544 to Ernakulam from early morning to late night, and journey times are quoted at one to two hours.
A ferry links Azhikode in Thrissur district to Munambam on Vypin; a bridge between them has been under construction since 2023.
About 40 km from the campus, and the arrival point for most Gulf-based candidates coming home on leave.
Electricians, fitters, welders and instrument technicians posted to platforms, jack-up rigs or marine facilities may be asked for the offshore induction as part of mobilisation.
Crew who want to move onto offshore supply and support vessels need the certificate in addition to their sea-going documents.
Safety officers who inspect or audit offshore worksites are often required to hold the same induction as the people they supervise.
Three days of the leave period can be turned into a certificate valid for four years, avoiding a rush when a new contract comes with a mobilisation date.
Read the certificate line on your offer letter. If it says T-BOSIET or tropical BOSIET, this is the course. If it says BOSIET with EBS, the standard version is requested, and you should book that instead; the fee and the three days are the same. If it says only offshore survival training, ask the recruiter or the client's HSE department for the exact name and OPITO code before you pay. There is no point in guessing: clients decide which version they accept. If you already hold other modules and only need the underwater helicopter escape, ask our team about the one-day T-HUET before booking the full course.
The offer or the client specifies the standard BOSIET, as some international and cold-water operators do.
You already hold the other induction modules and only need helicopter underwater escape.
Your Gulf role involves gas processing or sour-gas sites; a half-day OPITO 9014 course, valid for 2 years, that can be added to the same trip.
You are a supervisor or team leader and want a first aid certificate on top of the first aid content already inside T-BOSIET.
Four modules, assessed continuously by OPITO-approved instructors against the OPITO standard. You must show competence in every exercise before the certificate is issued.
Offshore hazards and risk controls, the safety legislation and management systems that apply, and the roles and responsibilities offshore. For a technician new to the Gulf, this is where the idea of permits, muster points and reporting becomes concrete.
Helicopter travel hazards in tropical regions, brace positions and emergency procedures, and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter. Offshore workers who are flown to site need this exercise before they board, and it is the centre of the course.
Tropical survival techniques without an immersion suit, lifejackets and life rafts, hyperthermia and tropical-environment considerations, and basic first aid. Warm water brings different risks from cold water, and the course teaches them.
Fire hazards and prevention, using portable fire-fighting equipment and self-rescue from a smoke-filled environment on our fire ground.
Recruitment agencies, manning offices and Gulf-bound contractor teams based in the central Kerala belt often book several candidates at once. A group of five or ten technicians working to the same mobilisation date is better booked as a batch than as separate individuals.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Many operators in warm-water regions ask offshore personnel for the tropical certificate. Confirm against the client contract. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Requested by some international operators and wherever crew may be redeployed to cold-water assets. |
| Basic H2S Training | Many oil and gas sites ask for H2S awareness before access; valid for two years. |
| Basic First Aid Training | Often added for supervisors and nominated first-aiders on contractor teams. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Plan your visit around the course reporting time, including any same-day journey.
You do not need to leave Kerala. The campus is on Vypin island, and the journey from Thrissur is by train or bus to Ernakulam, then a taxi or local bus over the Goshree bridges. The road distance depends on your route; the shortest is about 67 km and the others are longer.
Frequent services run from Thrissur to Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town, taking roughly 1 h 15 min to 2 hours depending on the train. The Junction is about 15 km from the campus and the Town station about 14 km. Check live timings on the railway enquiry service.
Buses between Thrissur and Ernakulam run from early morning to late at night and take roughly one to two hours. From the Ernakulam bus stand you continue by taxi, bus or Water Metro to Vypin.
By road, allow about two hours with normal traffic, longer in the weekday evening rush around Ernakulam. A shared taxi suits a group of three or four candidates from the same area.
The Azhikode-Munambam ferry crosses the Periyar river mouth to Vypin. Ask locally about current timings and whether it carries vehicles before relying on it, and keep the road route as a backup.
A candidate living near Thrissur railway station faces about two hours each way, so four hours of travel for each course day. Candidates from the coast near Kodungallur may find the journey shorter.
You can commute daily, but a 3-day OPITO course with helicopter escape and pool drills is physically demanding, and a long journey on either side adds fatigue. A late train home after a pool day is a poor end to the day.
Most candidates from Thrissur travel on the evening before day 1 or very early on the first morning, and stay near Njarakkal until the last day. Our team can suggest places to stay near the campus. There is no accommodation on campus.
Batches run regularly. Write to info@imostacademy.in or WhatsApp +91 8075 787307 with your name, the version of the certificate and your preferred dates.
Swimwear, towel, comfortable clothing and valid photo ID. Spectacle wearers should bring a retaining strap, and any medication should be declared to the instructor.
