Kochi's economy is built around its harbour. Cochin Shipyard, the largest public-sector shipyard in India by dock capacity, builds and repairs ships here. A new dry dock of 310 metres opened in January 2024, and the yard's International Ship Repair Facility is on Willingdon Island inside Cochin Port. Yard and contractor staff work with cranes, confined spaces, hot work and heavy lifts, so fire, first aid and permit-to-work courses are routine purchases here.
On the same island as our campus, Puthuvypeen is home to Petronet LNG's Kochi terminal, with a nameplate capacity of 5 million tonnes a year, commissioned in 2013. The BPCL Kochi Refinery at Ambalamugal, operating since 1966, and DP World's Vallarpadam container terminal, opened in 2011, complete the cluster. In the 2023-24 year Vallarpadam handled about 754,000 containers, which gives a sense of the terminal and logistics workforce that needs basic safety certificates.
Off the harbour, the other half of the local demand is hospitality and catering. Kerala received 22.25 million visitors in 2024, and Kochi is one of the state's main arrival points for tourists, which keeps hotels, restaurants, houseboat operators and caterers hiring. Food Safety, HACCP and First Aid are the courses searched for most from Kochi. A note on food safety: FSSAI's own supervisor scheme (FoSTaC) is delivered by FSSAI-authorised providers, whereas our food safety and HACCP courses carry an iMost certificate, so check what your licence requires before you book.
