Healthcare is the first thing most people name about Kottayam. Government Medical College, Kottayam, began work in 1962 and now occupies a 265-acre campus at Gandhinagar, and the Government College of Nursing, founded in 1982 in the same area, is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council. The Kerala Migration Survey 2023 found that women make up 19.1 per cent of the state's emigrants, and that just over half of those women work as nurses or nursing assistants. Nursing registration and licensing abroad are outside what we do. What we can offer the same people and their employers are workplace safety courses for the staff around the wards: first aid for non-clinical staff, security and hostel teams, fire training, and food safety for hospital and campus kitchens.
The same survey estimates 2.2 million Keralites living abroad, with the Gulf countries still taking about 80.5 per cent of them. In a district like Kottayam that is not abstract. Many households have a relative on a Gulf contract, and some of those relatives are electricians, fitters, instrument technicians and plant operators whose employers ask for an induction before mobilisation. T-BOSIET and Basic H2S are the two courses that come up most often for that group, and the contractor's own rules decide which applies.
The other large employer of people with food and first-aid needs is tourism. Kumarakom is about 16 km from Kottayam town, on Vembanad Lake, and the lake is used by houseboats whose kitchens are covered by Kerala Tourism's norms for clean storage, insect-free kitchens and waste treatment. The same norms make firefighting equipment and lifebuoys mandatory. Staff on those boats, in resorts and in the restaurants around them are the people most likely to need a food safety or first aid certificate for their employer. Since early 2023 Kerala has also required food handlers to hold a health card issued after a medical examination, which is a separate document from any training certificate.
