Kozhikode is known across Kerala for its eating-out culture, from long-running Malabar restaurants to the catering units that serve weddings and Gulf-bound travellers. Food Safety and HACCP were the most searched courses from Kozhikode, and enforcement explains why: in 2023 Kerala's food safety department ran a statewide inspection drive, and fines in Kozhikode district rose from Rs 13 lakh to Rs 24 lakh between 2021-22 and 2022-23. Restaurant owners and catering managers are the people who most often ask us about these courses.
Visitor numbers add to this. Kerala recorded 25.88 million visitors in 2025, and Kozhikode district logged about 1.47 million domestic arrivals, the sixth-highest among Kerala's districts. That keeps hotels, homestays, banquet halls and caterers busy, and each needs staff who can give first aid and run a safe kitchen.
The Gulf is the other half of the story. Calicut International Airport at Karipur, about 28 km from the city, lists services to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Bahrain, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Kuwait City, Muscat, Ras Al Khaimah, Riyadh, Salalah and Sharjah, and it handled about 3.86 million passengers in 2025-26. Malappuram, next door, received 21 per cent of Kerala's remittances in the 2018 migration survey, the highest of any district. Malabar families have a long history of working in the Gulf, and some of them now move into offshore or industrial roles where an induction certificate is requested.
Beypore, at the mouth of the Chaliyar river near Kozhikode, is a minor port with a long record of trade with the Middle East.
