Fire extinguisher course for Mumbai employers

Fire Extinguisher Training in Kochi for Mumbai Buildings and Factories

In a Mumbai building, extinguishers are inspected by a licensed agency twice a year, but on the day of a fire the person holding one is a security guard, a receptionist or a kitchen supervisor. This half-day iMost course trains those people to choose the right extinguisher and use it, and to check the equipment between inspections. The certificate is valid for two years. This page is for society committees, facility managers and factory safety officers who want to know what the course does and where it stops.

What Maharashtra asks of a building, and what the course adds

Maharashtra's Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 puts a regular duty on owners and occupiers. Under section 3(3) and Rule 4(2), the Directorate of Maharashtra Fire Services expects a certificate called Form B from a licensed agency in January and July each year. The January form covers July to December of the previous year, and the July form covers January to June. The Directorate's guidelines say the agency must show that fire and life safety systems are kept in order according to the relevant Indian Standards, and they name IS 2190:2024 for selecting, installing and maintaining first-aid extinguishers and IS 15683:2018 for the extinguishers themselves.

That is an inspection regime, not a training one. A licensed agency checks, services and certifies; it does not stand beside your staff when something ignites. The guidelines' sample declaration includes a line that a mock fire drill is held periodically and that attendance is attached. The National Building Code of India 2016, Part 4, goes further for large buildings: clause 4.10 expects a qualified fire officer for business buildings of 30 m and above, residential buildings of 60 m and above and starred hotels, among others, with a duty to train occupants in the use of firefighting equipment. Smaller premises have no such officer, which leaves a gap that a trained guard or supervisor can fill.

Licensing also has a Mumbai-specific edge. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's list of documents for renewing a health licence, for premises that had earlier fire safety requirements from the Chief Fire Officer, includes a validity certificate where only fire extinguishers are stipulated. The list marks it as not mandatory, but it shows that for trades that need a health licence, such as food premises, working extinguishers can feature in the licence paperwork.

The scale of the need is plain. PTI reported that Mumbai recorded 5,074 fire incidents in 2023, 15 per cent more than the 4,417 of 2022. We cannot say how many involved a small, controllable fire, but every one of those started with someone nearby deciding whether to reach for an extinguisher or run. Training does not remove that decision, it makes the first response informed. One limit is worth saying plainly: this course does not make you a licensed servicing agency, and it does not replace the Form B visit.

Mumbai roles that end up holding the extinguisher

Housing society watchmen, secretaries and committee volunteers

A society has a Form B visit twice a year, yet its first responders are the people on duty at the gate and on the floors.

Mall, hotel and office security and engineering staff

They know the building, and large premises depend on their first minute more than on any later arrival.

Restaurant and kitchen supervisors

Cooking fires call for a different extinguisher from an electrical panel, and picking wrongly makes things worse.

Factory, godown and workshop supervisors

Stored materials and machinery bring several fire classes into one shed, so the choice of extinguisher is a daily judgement.

Office administrators and facility coordinators

They arrange the Form B visit and walk the floors, and they are expected to notice a blocked or expired extinguisher.

Fire extinguisher, fire warden, basic fire fighting or fire watch

Each course answers a different question. The extinguisher course is about the equipment: which type for which fire, how to use it, and how to inspect it. Fire warden is about evacuation and headcounts. Basic fire fighting is the wider skill set for people who may have to tackle a fire as part of their job. Fire watch is a hot-work role. A Mumbai society or office usually starts with extinguisher training for all guards and supervisors, then adds wardens for the floors. Factories and godowns with heavier risks often add basic fire fighting for their trained team.

Fire Warden Training →

Your plan needs named people to clear a floor, count heads and brief the fire brigade.

Basic Fire Fighting Training →

Staff are expected to go beyond a first response and fight a fire that is growing.

Fire Watch Training →

The job is to stand watch while someone welds, grinds or cuts under a hot work permit.

Five modules, read against Mumbai premises

The half day mixes classroom teaching, live demonstrations, case studies and scenario work. You are tested through a written paper, a practical demonstration and oral questions, and a pass earns an iMost Academy certificate valid for two years. It is not an OPITO course.

  1. 01

    Fundamentals of fire safety

The fire triangle and tetrahedron, and the classes A, B, C, D and K. This is the starting point for choosing between a kitchen oil fire, a switchboard fire and burning paper.

  2. 02

    Types of fire extinguishers

Water, CO2, foam and dry chemical types, and which class each suits. Many buildings hold several kinds, and the label decides what is safe.

  3. 03

    Proper use of fire extinguishers

The pull, aim, squeeze and sweep technique, with demonstrations. You also learn when not to use one and walk away.

  4. 04

    Fire prevention and emergency response

Spotting hazards in your own workplace, and the response routine that follows the first alarm, such as who to call and where to meet.

  5. 05

    Inspection and maintenance

A standard checklist for routine inspection, finding defects and documenting what you saw. It supports the licensed agency's work and does not replace it.

For Mumbai facility managers, societies and factory safety teams

Training here is usually bought by whoever answers for the premises: a facility manager, a society secretary, a factory safety officer. The sensible pattern is to train all gate and floor staff on one cycle, then keep the dates in a register beside the Form B paperwork.

Basic Fire Fighting TrainingFor teams that may be expected to fight a growing fire, not just handle a small one.

Planning a group booking

  • A company login on the portal (portal.imostacademy.in/register) lets an approved buyer book groups at contract rates, receive GST invoices and see when each person's certificate lapses.
  • Fees are on request: send the headcount and preferred dates, and our team will quote. For a society or factory, one batch of guards and supervisors is the usual unit.
  • Stagger the shift teams so the premises are never left without a trained person on duty.
  • Upload a purchase order if you work that way; extended credit is considered only after an assessment.
