Structural fabricators, welders and riggers at the offshore yard
When a jacket or deck leaves the yard, installation and hook-up are offshore work, and a contractor may ask for yard people with experience of the structure.
The honest starting point is that Sohar is not an offshore town. Our Muscat T-BOSIET page covers the small amount of offshore work Oman does have, and none of it is based here. What Sohar has is a port and a heavy-fabrication yard, and both touch the sea in ways that sometimes lead to a platform. The L&T Modular Fabrication Yard in the Sohar Industrial Port Area lists offshore process platforms, jack-up rigs and SPAR or TLP structures among what it can build and load out, with a stated capacity of 60,000 tonnes a year. In 2021 a trade report described a 3,207-tonne jacket, 92 metres long, rolled out on self-propelled trailers onto a barge there. A structure like that is installed and hooked up offshore by marine and commissioning crews, and yard people with the right skills are sometimes asked to join them.
The second group works on the water at the port itself. Sohar Port and Freezone reported more than 3,000 vessel calls in 2024, with ship-to-ship operations up 19 per cent, according to Times of Oman. Tugs and pilot boats at the port are run by Svitzer: two pilot boats, each carrying 12 people, were named at the port in October 2019, and a separate agreement covered five tugs. Seafarers on such craft hold maritime certificates under their own rules, and those are separate from OPITO. A client may or may not treat one as a substitute for the other, so ask rather than assume.
The third group is made up of people who live in Sohar and take contract jobs elsewhere. Fabricators, riggers, scaffolders, welders and technicians hired through a contractor can find the offer letter naming a barge, a jack-up or a Gulf platform. We found no public figure for how many Sohar residents do this, so we make no claim about numbers. The practical advice is simple. Do not buy the course on a hope. Buy it when there is an offer, a named employer or a contract wording that asks for it, because a three-day course at ₹35,000 plus travel is a real cost.
One reason the tropical course suits Sohar is the water. One weather aggregator puts the sea off Sohar at roughly 24 °C in January and 32 °C in August. OPITO's T-BOSIET page speaks of a tropical environment without defining it, so the client wording matters more than any temperature figure. If a cooler-water posting is possible, the standard BOSIET with EBS is worth considering instead.

Reported in May 2021 as moved on self-propelled trailers onto a client-supplied barge at the yard.
Svitzer operates tugs and two 12-person pilot boats at the port, which handled over 3,000 vessel calls in 2024.
Up 19 per cent in 2024, which means more boat-based work alongside vessels at anchor.

They work at the edge of the water with marine contractors who may mobilise them for the tow or the installation.
Their daily work is at sea, though the maritime certificates they already hold are a separate matter from OPITO.
A fabrication inspector may be asked to witness installation, which means a boat or helicopter transfer.
A current certificate in hand shortens the gap between an offer and the flight, as long as the employer names the tropical version.
Three questions settle it. First, is there a named posting? If not, wait. Second, what does the wording say? OPITO 5501 means T-BOSIET, and 5700 means the standard BOSIET with EBS; they cost the same here and run the same three days. Third, where is the water? A tropical posting is the home ground of T-BOSIET, but a posting that could move to a cooler basin points to the standard course. If your work is a plant or a quay with no sea transfer, the real need may be permits or gas awareness, and our Sohar Permit to Work page is the better starting point.
The wording names 5700 or BOSIET, or the employer may post you outside warm water within four years.
You hold a T-BOSIET that is close to its four-year mark and want the one-day refresher.
You will only fly as a passenger and the client accepts helicopter escape without the full induction.
Your job is on the quay or in the yard and the real gap is permit knowledge, not survival at sea.
OPITO sets 19 guided learning hours and four mandatory units, with the safety induction taught as theory and the rest split roughly 40:60 between classroom and practical. Instructors assess each exercise as you do it, and a certificate follows only when you have shown competence in all of them.
Offshore hazards, risk controls, safety legislation and who does what on an installation. A yard worker sees the other end of the life of a structure, and this block explains how an offshore crew sees it.
Brace positions, emergency procedures and escaping a capsized, submerged helicopter in the pool simulator. It is part of the course even if your own transfer would be by boat.
Tropical survival techniques without an immersion suit, lifejackets, rafts, heat illness and basic first aid. For anyone who works from a barge or launch, this is the block most like the job.
Fire prevention, portable extinguishers and leaving a smoke-filled space. Welders and riggers know the extinguisher drill, but the smoke exercise is new to many.
Buyers in Sohar are fabrication and marine contractors, port service companies and recruitment offices that place people on projects away from the port. Since the need is project-driven, the sensible approach is to certify a short list of named people rather than the whole workforce.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Named for many warm-water offshore jobs. Confirm the code in the mobilisation papers before moving anyone onto it. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Named by some clients and for crews that may move beyond warm water. |
| Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) | Put the four-year date in the matrix so the one-day refresher is booked before a mobilisation. |
| Basic H2S Training | Add it where the destination handles sour gas; it runs on a two-year cycle. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
There is no direct flight from Sohar, so most people drive to Muscat International Airport (MCT) and fly to Cochin International Airport (COK). The campus on Vypin island is about 40 km from COK by road, and about 15 km from Ernakulam Junction over the Goshree bridges.
Route planners put the drive at about 210 km and around two and a half hours without traffic. For an early flight, leave in the small hours or sleep in Muscat the night before.
Direct services of about 3 hours 45 minutes are listed with Oman Air, Air India Express and IndiGo. Frequencies change by season, so confirm with the airline.
Book a taxi or app cab to Puthuval Road, Njarakkal, Ernakulam District, and allow an hour or longer for the bridges.
If you are going to Kerala for leave anyway, put the course in the first days of the break so that a repeated exercise cannot cost you a flight. For a stand-alone trip, count five days: the road and flight out, three course days, and the way back.
An Indian passport needs no visa for India. If you hold another passport, check the e-Visa categories on indianvisaonline.gov.in or ask the Indian Embassy in Muscat, since only the visa authority can say which fits a short safety course. Confirm your Omani residence permit covers the dates of your return.
Fees are in Indian rupees, per person. Before sending money from Oman, ask our team which payment route to use, and keep the receipt for any claim to your employer.
Ask for the offer letter or the mobilisation checklist, and find the line that names the survival certificate and its code.
Choose which of OPITO's five fitness routes you will use and keep the paper with your passport.
Write to info@imostacademy.in or message +91 8075 787307 with your dates. Batches run regularly, so ask our team for current dates before buying tickets.
Drive to Muscat, take the direct flight and settle near Vypin. The clock is 1 h 30 min ahead of Oman time.
Theory and the fire ground, then sea survival with first aid, then the helicopter simulator in the pool. Keep the days free of work calls.
Fly back with a spare day in hand. Send the certificate to your employer and diarise the four-year date.
