Basic First Aid for Coimbatore

Basic First Aid training in Kochi for Coimbatore's pump, foundry and textile units

Coimbatore is the Tamil Nadu industrial city nearest to our Kochi campus, a road trip of about three hours through the Palakkad gap. That makes a half-day first aid course practical for a van-load of supervisors in a way it is not for most cities. This page covers who benefits, what the course teaches, and how its iMost certificate sits beside the first-aid certificate that Tamil Nadu's factory rules ask of the person in charge of a first-aid box.

Thousands of small plants, and few of them with a full-time safety officer

Wikipedia's profile of Coimbatore counts more than 25,000 small, medium and large industries in the city and describes it as the Pump City, supplying nearly half of India's motor and pump requirements. It also records textile strength, with about 15 per cent of India's cotton spinning capacity in 2009, and a wet-grinder industry that makes about three-quarters of the country's output. A 2016 investment guide adds foundries, with trade bodies working on sand reclamation. Many of these are units with a few dozen to a few hundred workers, where the safety role is carried by a supervisor or the owner's family, so a half-day course that adds trained people on every shift has a real effect.

The hazards differ by shop. In a foundry the immediate risks are burns, splashes and heat stress. In a machine shop or pump-assembly bay they are cuts, crush injuries and flying swarf. In a motor test bay an electric shock can stop the heart, which is why CPR and the defibrillator module matter there. In a spinning or weaving mill, long shifts, humid heat and moving machinery produce entanglement injuries and collapses. The course does not teach electrical or foundry safety as such; it teaches what to do for the person on the floor in the first minutes.

The Tamil Nadu rule that sets the formal bar is rule 63-B of the Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, 1950, which ties the person in charge of a first-aid box to a certificate from St John's Ambulance Association. A government order dated 6 December 2022, published in the gazette on 28 December 2022, added the Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Health Care to rule 63-B. An iMost certificate is neither of those, and we do not say it meets the rule. Keep your formal first-aid box in-charge certified through a recognised body, and use our course to widen the circle of people who can act.

One more point on the legal background. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 came into force on 21 November 2025, and state rules under it are still being framed. Until they settle, ask your factory inspector which first-aid arrangements your unit is expected to show.

Pump and motor makers

Wikipedia credits Coimbatore with nearly half of India's motor and pump requirements, hence the Pump City name.

Spinning mills and textile units

About 15 per cent of India's cotton spinning capacity in 2009, per Wikipedia.

Foundries and engineering shops

A 2016 investment guide mentions foundries and sand reclamation; the city counts more than 25,000 industries in all.

Wet-grinder manufacturers

Wikipedia puts the industry at about 75 per cent of national output and about 70,000 jobs.

Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, 1950, rule 63-B

Sets the certificate for the person in charge of a first-aid box; amended by an order of 6 December 2022.

Coimbatore roles that can use a half-day first aid course

Foundry shift supervisors and furnace crew leaders

Burns and heat collapse are the first emergencies a pouring bay produces, and the supervisor is closest.

Machine-shop and pump-assembly supervisors

Cuts, crush injuries and eye injuries happen at the lathe, the press and the assembly bench.

Motor test and electrical maintenance staff

After an electric shock the first steps are CPR and a defibrillator, which this course practises.

Textile mill shift managers and jobbers

Long shifts, heat and moving machinery make collapses and entanglement injuries a standing risk.

Safety and welfare officers in small units

They are often the only person trained to coordinate while the ambulance is called.

Owners and managers of small units

They carry the responsibility for the shop floor, even when they do not run it.

When Basic First Aid fits a Coimbatore unit, and when something else does

Take Basic First Aid when you want more people who can act before help arrives, and the certificate is for internal competence or a customer's supplier audit. Do not take it as a replacement for the certificate the factory rules require of the person in charge of a first-aid box; that sits with St John's Ambulance Association or the Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Health Care. If your real hazard is hot work or a chemical store, pick the course that addresses it and add first aid for the people who will respond. The journey is short enough that two courses in one visit are realistic.

Fire Watch Training →

Your maintenance team issues hot-work permits or someone must stand watch during welding and grinding. Ask our team for the current fee.

Permit to Work PTW System Training →

You want permit issuers and receivers to work to a single system. It is an iMost certificate, half a day, ₹10,000, valid two years.

Hazardous Materials HAZMAT Training →

Your floor stores or uses chemicals, and spills and exposure are the concern more than injuries.

The half day, applied to foundry, shop floor and mill

Training is interactive classroom work with practical demonstrations, case studies and scenario exercises. You are assessed by written test, demonstration and oral questioning, and receive an iMost certificate on completion.

  1. 01

    Introduction and legal considerations

Purpose and limits of first aid, and the duties around it. Use it to tie what you learn to your factory rules and your customers' safety lists.

  2. 02

Basic life support: CPR, AED and recovery position

The module for collapses and shocks. Practise it with the person who will actually be next to a motor test bench.

  3. 03

    Wounds, burns, fractures and sprains

Cuts from sheet and swarf, crush injuries, and burns from hot metal or surfaces, with practical dressing and splinting.

  4. 04

    Medical emergencies

Choking, heart attack, stroke and seizures, which are as likely among long-serving staff as any injury at the machine.

  5. 05

    Environmental emergencies

Heat illness, poisoning, hypothermia and cold injury. Heat stress is the one that Coimbatore foundries and mills see in summer.

  6. 06

    Special considerations and practical scenarios

Children, older people and mental health crises, then role-play and simulations that join the modules together.

For Coimbatore factory owners, HSE officers and industry associations

Buyers include owners and managers of pump, motor, foundry and textile units, HSE and welfare officers, and industry-association members who send supervisors together. Because the trip is short, a mixed batch from several small units is easy to organise.

Standards that shape training in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, 1950, rule 63-BAsks for a certificate from St John's Ambulance Association, or since December 2022 from the Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Health Care, for the person in charge of a first-aid box.
Factories Act, 1948, Section 45The central provision that lets the State Government recognise the first-aid certificate for the person in charge.
Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020In force from 21 November 2025; confirm which Tamil Nadu rules apply to your unit.
Customer and supplier auditsLarge buyers may ask for evidence of trained first-aiders. Ask what they accept.

What employers commonly ask for

CourseRequirement note
Basic First Aid TrainingAn iMost certificate. Check whether an inspector or customer needs a specific body's certificate for a named role.
Fire Watch TrainingCommon for contractors on hot-work jobs.
Permit to Work PTW System TrainingUseful for maintenance teams that issue permits for hot work or electrical isolation.
Hazardous Materials HAZMAT TrainingFor units that store or handle chemicals.

Planning a group booking

  • Several small units can share one vehicle and one batch. Send names and units together and we will suggest dates.
  • Say in the enquiry if an inspector or customer has asked for a particular certificate, so we can tell you before payment if ours fits.
  • Tamil Nadu companies are invoiced in rupees with GST. A corporate account (portal.imostacademy.in/register) keeps statements and certificate dates for later refreshers.
  • Train people from each shift, not only the day shift, so a trained first-aider is on site round the clock.

Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.

Coimbatore to the campus at Njarakkal

Coimbatore to Kochi is about 190 km by road, roughly three hours by car, and about 3 hours 45 minutes by train. Neither involves the long distances of other Tamil Nadu cities, so a half-day course can be a same-day or one-night visit.

Van or car through Palakkad

Road distance is listed at 191 to 194 km and about three hours. A group can leave before dawn, attend the course and return by night; a one-night stay is more comfortable. Check traffic on the day.

Bengaluru to Ernakulam Express (12677)

Listed at Coimbatore Junction at 13:00 and Ernakulam Junction at 16:55 daily. A good fit for arriving the afternoon before a morning course.

Alleppey Express (22639)

Calls at Coimbatore at about 04:00 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 08:40, so it puts you in Kochi at breakfast on the day.

Return: Intercity from Ernakulam (12678)

Leaves Ernakulam Junction at 09:10 and reaches Coimbatore Junction at 12:47. That departure is too early for a half-day course, so plan the return by road or a later train.

Fitting a half-day course into a Coimbatore visit

  1. 1

    Decide who needs to attend

Pick at least one person from each shift and each shop, and confirm whether anyone needs a state-recognised certificate for a first-aid box.

  2. 2

    Choose same-day or one night

A van can reach the campus area in about three hours. If your batch is a morning one, travel the afternoon before to avoid starting tired.

  3. 3

Pair a second course if useful

Ask our team about fire watch, permit to work or hazardous materials in the same trip.

  4. 4

    Attend and practise

Wear comfortable clothing for floor exercises and bring photo ID. Tell the instructor before the practical session about any health condition or medicines you take.

  5. 5

Brief the shop floor on return

Show colleagues where the first-aid boxes and defibrillator are, and file the certificate with your safety records.
