Commissioning and service engineers of pump, valve and compressor makers
They follow equipment from the factory to its first start-up, which for oil and gas customers can be on an offshore facility.
Nobody drills for oil near Coimbatore, so it helps to be exact about why the question arises. The city's link to offshore work is the equipment trade. Flowserve opened a pump plant here in 2007 to make process pumps for chemical and oil and gas markets, added a second block in 2008 for medium-range vertical and multistage barrel pumps, and announced a third block in March 2014 for single- and multistage high-energy API pumps, with a package bay for assemblies of up to 50 tons. The company described it as serving power and oil and gas customers across Asia Pacific. A pump is tested on the shop floor in Coimbatore, but its first start-up, its performance trials and its warranty visits happen wherever it is installed.
That is where an offshore certificate enters. An engineer who has never left the workshop may be asked to attend a start-up on a platform or floating unit, and the operator will want evidence that the visitor can escape a ditched helicopter and survive in the water. The tropical certificate is the one most often discussed for Indian waters, which are warm. Many operators and contractors ask for it, though the contract decides, and some name the standard BOSIET.
The second source of candidates is seafarer training. Maritime courses in and around the city lead to cadet and officer careers under the Directorate General of Shipping, and cadets and officers who later move to offshore support vessels are usually asked for an offshore survival certificate in addition to their seafarer papers. We could not confirm a dedicated petroleum or offshore degree at any Coimbatore college, so for most graduates the route into oil and gas runs through equipment makers, contractors and service companies.
Buying the course before an offer is a judgement call. A certificate on the CV can shorten a mobilisation, but a client that names BOSIET may not accept the tropical one, so ask the employer or agent which version first.
Opened in 2007; a third block announced in 2014 covers API pumps and package assemblies of up to 50 tons.
STCW basic safety is set by the Directorate General of Shipping and is a separate qualification from OPITO offshore induction.
19 guided learning hours and four mandatory units; the safety induction unit is entirely theory.
Dozens of services are listed on the corridor, including the Kerala SF Express (12626) at 12:35, arriving 16:30 at Ernakulam Town.
They follow equipment from the factory to its first start-up, which for oil and gas customers can be on an offshore facility.
Skid and panel work is often finished on site by the technician who wired it.
Witnessing an installation or acceptance test usually means the same induction as the crew.
Holding the certificate before the interview removes one item from the mobilisation list. Check what the employer wants first.
Seafarer training and offshore induction are separate, and vessel operators often ask for both.
Read the scope of work first. If it says T-BOSIET or tropical offshore induction, this is the course. If it says BOSIET, you need the standard version with the emergency breathing system, which costs the same and runs for the same three days. Coimbatore is close enough that the classroom format is realistic, because the online route mainly saves leave days, not travel. If you can study at home and want one day away, the digital version fits. Helicopter escape alone is the one-day T-HUET, which leaves out the induction, fire and first aid parts most platform visits require.
The contract or operator names BOSIET, or your equipment may go to a non-tropical region.
You can study the theory online and want one practical day at the campus. Same ₹35,000, valid four years.
Your client wants helicopter underwater escape only. One day, ₹25,000, valid four years.
Your equipment goes into sour-gas service and the site asks for hydrogen sulphide awareness. Half a day, ₹12,500, valid two years.
OPITO fixes the syllabus, so every candidate covers the same four units. The first is all theory; the others split about 40 per cent theory to 60 per cent practice. Assessment runs through the three days, and the certificate is issued only when you have shown competence in each exercise.
Offshore hazards, safety legislation and the roles people hold on an installation. A factory engineer will find the muster discipline new, because every visitor is part of the emergency organisation.
You practise brace positions and emergency procedures, then escape from an upturned, submerged cabin in the indoor pool, using a Modular Egress Training Simulator. Visiting specialists often fly out, so this is the part they would use first.
Tropical survival techniques with no immersion suit, lifejackets, life rafts and the effects of heat, plus basic first aid. Someone who tests pumps in a dry bay rarely handles a lifejacket, so expect to learn the sequence from scratch.
Hand-held extinguishers on the fire ground, then a way out of a smoke-filled space. Workshops hold fire drills; the difference here is controlled smoke and a restricted route out.
Training here is bought by field-service departments of equipment makers, contractors who send inspection and commissioning staff, maritime institutes and crewing agents. Service teams travel at short notice, so the task is knowing in advance who holds a valid certificate.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly asked of personnel visiting or working on warm-water Indian installations. The contract decides. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Asked where staff may be sent to non-tropical or international assets. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) | Useful for teams who want fewer days off site; the theory is done online beforehand. |
| Basic H2S Training | Often added for work in sour-gas service; confirm with the site. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
The road is about 190 km through Palakkad and takes roughly three hours without stops. By train, the journey is about 3 hours 45 minutes, and a long list of daily services runs through the evening and morning.
Listed at Coimbatore Junction at 12:35 and Ernakulam Town at 16:30, daily. The Ernakulam Express (16377) is listed at 13:00 and arrives at Ernakulam Junction at 17:10. Either gets you there for an early night before day one.
Listed to leave Coimbatore at 09:15 and reach Ernakulam Town at 12:50, daily. It suits travelling on the day before the course and resting in the afternoon.
The Kerala SF Express (12625) is listed from Ernakulam Town at 16:10 and the Chennai SF Express (22640) at 16:27, reaching Coimbatore at 20:50 and 21:32. Ask our team the day-three finish time before you book.
Roughly 190 km and about three hours. A company group can leave after lunch and arrive for dinner; allow extra time for traffic around Kochi.
Ask your employer for the exact course name. Check which of the medical options OPITO lists you hold or can obtain, or plan to complete the screening form.
Pick a train that arrives before dark, and keep swimwear, a towel and your ID in the bag you carry on. Ask our team where to stay close to the campus.
The theory unit comes first, then practical sessions in an order set by the instructors. Declare any medication on arrival.
Helicopter escape and sea survival in the indoor pool. Tell the instructor early if you are a weak swimmer so the exercises can be supervised accordingly.
Finish remaining exercises, collect the certificate and put the four-year expiry in your phone. Book the return only after you know the finish time.
