Training for Chennai, Puducherry, Coimbatore and Madurai

OPITO offshore survival training in Kochi, an overnight train or a short direct flight from Chennai

Chennai has the maritime institutes, the ports and the manning offices, but offshore survival courses are a separate certificate that many candidates still need to collect. Our Kochi campus is a direct IndiGo flight of about an hour and a quarter from Chennai airport, or one night on the Alleppey or Trivandrum Mail. Candidates from Puducherry, Coimbatore and Madurai usually reach us through the same Chennai-to-Kerala corridor.

Why Chennai crews look to the offshore certificate

Chennai is not an offshore oil city in the way Mumbai is, and that shapes who writes to us. The people here are seafarers and marine engineers who want to cross into offshore support vessels, young graduates from the city's maritime institutes building a first offshore CV, shore-side workers at the ports and the refinery who are being asked for a survival certificate, and Tamil Nadu candidates pursuing rig and platform jobs on either coast.

The industrial base is real, though. Chennai Port and its subsidiary Kamarajar Port at Ennore together handled 103.37 million tonnes in 2024-25, crossing 100 million for the first time. At Kattupalli, north of the city, L&T runs a shipyard and a modular fabrication facility that it describes as serving the Krishna-Godavari offshore basin, building jackets, topsides and subsea structures.

Further south, the Cauvery basin's gas and oil activity is run from Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, where ONGC's Cauvery Asset is based. The basin's production is largely onshore, so most of the safety conversation there is about H2S, permit to work and fire, with offshore survival entering for people who rotate to other assets or to vessels. CPCL's Manali refinery, listed by its parent IndianOil at 10.5 million tonnes a year, adds a large process-industry workforce whose contractors are more often asked for fire, first aid and hazardous-materials certificates than for BOSIET.

HACCP is also among the most searched topics from Chennai, so catering and hospitality staff heading for marine roles will find it listed with the OPITO courses.

Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port (Ennore)

Combined throughput passed 100 million tonnes in 2024-25; Kamarajar is mainly dry bulk and Chennai Port mainly containers.

L&T Kattupalli shipyard and modular fabrication facility

Builds offshore jackets, topsides and subsea modules as well as naval vessels; L&T signed MoUs with Ulstein and DNV for the yard in April 2026.

CPCL Manali refinery

Listed by IndianOil at 10.5 MMTPA; the small Cauvery Basin Refinery at Nagapattinam was decommissioned in 2019 and a larger complex is planned there.

ONGC Cauvery Asset, Karaikal

Regional hub for gas and oil produced mainly onshore in the Cauvery basin, between Puducherry and Ramnad.

Indian Maritime University, Chennai campus (Uthandi)

East Coast Road campus on about 20 acres with nautical science and marine engineering programmes; HIMT and AMET are other large maritime institutes in and around the city.

Courses recommended for Chennai

For Chennai and Tamil Nadu employers

Training here is bought by marine and offshore contractors, fabrication yards, ship managers and manning agencies, port-based service companies and refinery contractors. Safety teams often handle crews that are scattered between Chennai, Ennore, Kattupalli and the Cauvery sites, so one booking may cover people with very different certificate needs.

Standards that shape training in Tamil Nadu

OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate)A technical body under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, set up in 1986, that drafts safety standards for the oil and gas industry and audits compliance with them.
Petroleum and Natural Gas (Safety in Offshore Operations) Rules, 2008Notified in 2008 to govern safety in offshore petroleum operations, with OISD designated as the competent authority and a 500 metre safety zone around installations.
Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH)Technical and commercial support body for India's upstream sector, which also administers the exploration licensing rounds under which basins such as KG and Cauvery are offered.
Directorate General of Shipping (DGS)Implements the STCW convention for Indian seafarers, including Basic Safety Training, which is a separate DGS-approved course and not a substitute for OPITO offshore certificates.

What employers commonly ask for

CourseRequirement note
Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET)Many operators and contractors working in warm Indian waters ask offshore personnel for the tropical certificate. Confirm with the client contract.
Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS)Standard BOSIET is often requested where crew may be redeployed to international or cold-water assets. The operator or client sets the rule, so check the scope of work.
Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery)Useful for employers who want to limit time away from site; online theory is completed first and the practical day is booked separately.
Basic First Aid TrainingCommonly asked of supervisors and nominated first-aiders at yards, terminals and refineries.
HACCP Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points TrainingRelevant to catering contractors serving ships, camps and accommodation vessels; confirm what the client contract asks for.

Planning a group booking

  • Register on the corporate portal at https://portal.imostacademy.in/register. Approved companies get team logins, contract (rate card) pricing, group bookings, and a record of staff certificates and renewal dates.
  • Invoices to Tamil Nadu and other Indian companies are issued in INR and carry GST; purchase orders are accepted. Statements are available on the portal.
  • Group bookings work best when planned around vessel rotations and yard schedules. Tell us how many people and which courses, and we will propose batches.
  • Credit terms can be arranged for approved companies after a credit assessment; ask our team how it works.
  • Upload certificate scans to the portal so your HSE team sees expiry dates for a whole crew in one place instead of tracking them in a spreadsheet.

Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.

Getting from Chennai to our Kochi campus

Chennai is one of the easiest cities to reach us from. IndiGo flies non-stop between Chennai and Cochin International Airport on several departures a day, and two overnight trains from Chennai Central call at Coimbatore and Palakkad before reaching Ernakulam.

Direct flight, MAA to COK

IndiGo's published timetable shows about five non-stop flights a day, scheduled at roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes. The first leaves around 8:00 in the morning, the last around 9:40 at night. Cochin airport is about 35 to 45 km from Njarakkal depending on the route and traffic. Check the current timetable before booking.

Alleppey Express 22639

Leaves Chennai Central at 20:55 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 08:40, about 11 hours 45 minutes, with stops at Katpadi, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore and Palakkad. It ends at the Junction, the closest main station to Njarakkal.

Trivandrum Mail 12623

Leaves Chennai Central at 19:30 and reaches Ernakulam Town at 06:25. It also stops at Coimbatore and Palakkad, so candidates from Coimbatore can board it there. Confirm the stop and timings on the railway enquiry service before travelling.

Car or bus via Salem and Palakkad

NH 44 to Salem and then NH 544 through Coimbatore and Palakkad to Kochi. It is roughly 700 km and a long day behind the wheel, so it only makes sense for a group sharing a vehicle.

Planning your course from Chennai

  1. 1

    Decide which version you need

Ask the employer or manning agent whether the job sits in tropical waters (T-BOSIET) or needs the standard BOSIET. Seafarers from Chennai who are not yet attached to a contract can ask our team which of the two is more widely accepted in the sector they are aiming for.

  2. 2

    Check your paperwork

Collect a valid photo ID, and if you hold an earlier OPITO certificate, bring that too so the renewal is recorded correctly.

  3. 3

Choose between three days and one practical day

The standard routes take three days at the campus. T-BOSIET Digital Delivery does the theory online and leaves a single practical day in the pool and fire ground. If you are travelling from Chennai and want a one-night trip, ask for the digital route.

  4. 4

Book travel around the course dates

Batches run regularly, so check upcoming dates with our team before buying tickets. The morning flight from Chennai gets you to the campus the same day; the overnight train gets you in at breakfast.

  5. 5

    Pack for the water-based sessions

Bring swimwear, a towel, comfortable clothing and a valid photo ID. If you wear spectacles, bring a retaining strap, and declare any medication at the start.

  6. 6

Collect the certificate and note the renewal date

OPITO certificates are valid for four years and Basic H2S for two. Put the expiry in your phone before you leave; the next renewal is easier to book when your dates are known.

Questions from Chennai

Is there an OPITO centre in Chennai, or do I have to come to Kochi?⌄

Other OPITO-approved centres exist in India and abroad, so Kochi is not your only option. People from Chennai choose us for a mix of reasons: a direct flight or one overnight train, the tropical T-BOSIET course, a published fee of Rs 35,000 for the three-day course, and the chance to combine the course with a visit to Kerala. Compare dates and fees with other centres before deciding.
