Start with the map. Puducherry and Karaikal lie on the Tamil Nadu coast, Yanam is on the Andhra coast, and Mahé is a small enclave of about 9 sq km on the Kerala coast, with 41,816 residents at the 2011 census. Mahé sits on National Highway 66 between Kozhikode, 58 km to the south, and Kannur, 27 km to the north, and its own railway station is on the Palakkad division. That makes Mahé the part of the territory nearest to our campus, and a place where the train to Ernakulam takes about five and a half to six hours. Yanam is an enclave inside Andhra Pradesh, with Kakinada Town railway station about 27 km away, so people there will find our Kakinada page more relevant.
The industrial base is in estates run by the territory's development corporation. The Industries and Commerce Department's table, last updated in December 2020, lists Thattanchavady (51 acres, 110 units), Mettupalayam (167 acres, 257 units), Sedarapet (62 acres, 83 units), Kattukuppam (27 units on about 16 acres), Kirumampakkam (19 units) and a small estate at Karaikal (18 units). Thirubuvanai is set aside for electronics on 50 acres. That is more than 500 working units. The practical question for a small unit is who on each shift can treat a burn, an electric shock or a collapse, and who leads people out if a fire starts.
The other large employer of ordinary workers is hospitality. In June 2025 the Tourism Minister put annual arrivals at about 19 lakh domestic and 1 lakh international visitors and set a target of 30 lakh a year by 2030. Hotels, guest houses and restaurants need staff who can handle food safely, lead an evacuation and give first aid, which is a different mix from the industrial estates. Hospitals add their own kitchens. JIPMER's Karaikal campus uses the 506-bed Karaikal General Hospital for clinical teaching, and a university profile of the main Puducherry institute describes nearly 2,000 beds.
On the education side, the Puducherry Technological University was formed on 5 September 2020 from the former engineering college, and its B.Tech streams include civil, electronics and communication, and mechanical. We could not find a marine or petroleum programme at it or at Pondicherry University's Karaikal campus, so graduates who want offshore work generally reach it through general engineering plus the right certificates. Many have staff split between shifts and sites, so batches need planning around rosters.

The three main starting points have different best routes. Mahé is on the main Kerala coastal line and has a number of daily trains to Ernakulam. Karaikal has its own overnight service, described on our T-BOSIET page. Puducherry city has no direct train to Ernakulam in the listings we checked, so it is a two-leg journey.
Listings show the Cannanore-Alleppey Express (16308) leaving at 05:39 and reaching Ernakulam Junction at 11:15, the Ernad Express (16605) at 10:05 reaching 16:15, and the Cannanore-Ernakulam Express (16306) at 15:18 reaching 20:50. The journey takes 5 hours 30 minutes to about 6 hours 15 minutes. By road it is about 242 km along NH 66.
Villupuram Junction is about 40 km from the city. The Guruvayur Express (16127) is listed there at 13:25 and at Ernakulam Junction at 04:45, daily, a journey of about 15 hours 20 minutes. Confirm times with the railway enquiry service.
IndiGo flies from Pondicherry Airport to Bengaluru, and Air India Express lists three daily non-stop flights between Bengaluru and Kochi. The connection suits people already travelling for work, though the train is cheaper.
Puducherry city to Kochi is about 575 km by road. Chennai is 145 to 165 km away, with a direct flight to Kochi of about 1 hour 15 minutes.
