Engineers on international offshore projects
A client with cold-water assets will usually name BOSIET, and a blended course lets you obtain it without three days away from the project.
The tropical certificates cover most local work. The standard BOSIET is for people whose next assignment may not be in warm water, and in Chennai that can mean three kinds of candidate: engineers on international projects whose clients operate cold-water fields, seafarers hoping to join offshore support vessels that serve European installations, and graduates of the city's ocean engineering programmes. IIT Madras, for example, traces its Department of Ocean Engineering to the Ocean Engineering Centre of 1977, and the department lists fixed, floating and compliant offshore structures among its fields. Graduates like these are choosing a career, not one contract, and the standard certificate keeps more options open. Which version a given operator accepts is for the operator to say.
The blended format suits them for a practical reason: they are rarely in one place for three days. Under our programme the theory is completed online, in the form of four e-learning modules on safety induction, helicopter safety and escape, sea survival with first aid, and fire fighting with self-rescue. The practical day repeats each subject hands-on and starts with a safety induction assessment, and you are assessed by a written test and practical drills. In OPITO's own digital-delivery standard for the tropical course, learners finish the online elements first and are then assessed against all outcomes at an approved centre, with no set minimum or maximum gap between the two. Ask our team how long your online access lasts and what window we work to between finishing the theory and the practical day.
Medical evidence is easy to overlook. OPITO needs proof of fitness before any practical exercise, whether an offshore medical, an equivalent your employer has approved, or the centre's screening form. For a UK posting, the UK industry has its own offshore medical from approved physicians, and an in-date one meets OPITO's first option. Those guidelines are being revised: one offshore wind operator's page says the current issue introduces conditional certificates and a safe weight limit of 124 kg clothed for everyone going offshore in the UK. Check your fitness against the UK rules before you book a flight to Kochi.
One more caution. Some employers additionally ask for compressed-air emergency breathing training, a separate OPITO product that this course does not replace. This page covers BOSIET with EBS, code 5703. If your offer letter lists anything beyond that, tell our team before you pay.
BOSIET with EBS in digital delivery: e-learning first, then a practical day with assessment.
Traces its origin to the Ocean Engineering Centre founded in 1977; offers a B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
A separate medical issued by approved physicians; guidelines are being revised, so confirm current rules with your employer.
About 1 hour 15 minutes in the air, with several departures a day on IndiGo.

You can study at home between contracts and spend one day at the campus. The operator decides which certificates it accepts.
A first job with an international contractor may require the standard certificate, and it is easier to have it ready than to arrange it later.
The format is meant for people new to offshore work or coming back to it. A lapsed certificate means starting again with the full course, not a refresher.
A cohort can finish the e-learning together at the office and travel once for the practical day.
There are three decisions, and the contract answers the first two. First, standard or tropical: if the posting is in warm water, T-BOSIET Digital Delivery may be enough, at the same fee; if it names BOSIET, use this page. Second, classroom or blended: the three-day BOSIET with EBS, code 5700, gives you instructor contact throughout, while this one trades two days at the campus for self-study at home. Third, whether your employer accepts the digital certificate at all. Both are valid for four years, but acceptance belongs to the client, so ask in writing. If you can study online with a reliable connection, the blended route saves time; if not, choose the classroom course.
The posting is confirmed in warm water and the client accepts the tropical certificate. Same ₹35,000, valid four years.
You prefer instructor-led teaching for the full three days or your employer asks for classroom delivery.
You already hold an in-date BOSIET and need the one-day refresher. ₹25,000; ask our team to confirm eligibility.
The theory comes as OPITO-approved e-learning; the practical day is run and assessed by OPITO-approved instructors. You meet the same four subject areas twice, first as theory and then hands-on.
Four modules: safety induction, helicopter safety and escape, sea survival with first aid, and fire fighting with self-rescue. Study for an exam rather than skimming.
The practical day opens with a written test on the induction content, so your online study is checked before you reach the pool.
Brace positions, controlled descent and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter using the Emergency Breathing System, practised in the indoor pool with a Modular Egress Training Simulator. EBS is what makes this the standard version.
Lifejackets, life rafts, individual and group survival and basic first aid, practised rather than described.
Hand-held extinguishers and a smoke-filled escape on the fire ground. Fitting four practical areas into one day is demanding, so turn up rested.
Companies that buy this version usually have people who might be sent to a cold-water asset, or who hold a pool of crew waiting for contracts. The blended format lets a training coordinator organise the online part in the office and book a single practical day.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (Digital Delivery) | For standard-version requirements where the client accepts the blended format. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | The classroom equivalent, for clients or people who want it. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) | For confirmed warm-water assignments. |
| Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS (FOET with EBS) | The refresher for people with an in-date BOSIET. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Because the course is a single day at the campus, the journey decides how much leave you use. Chennai has direct flights to Cochin, and overnight trains run in both directions.
The direct IndiGo flight from Chennai to Cochin takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. The airport is 40 to 45 km from the campus, so budget an hour or more for the taxi. Ask our team where to stay nearby.
Departs Chennai Central at 20:55, arrives Ernakulam Junction 08:40. Use it for a same-morning arrival only if our team confirms a late enough start.
Listings show the Chennai SF Express (22640) leaving Ernakulam Junction at 16:27 for Chennai at 05:15, the TVC-MAS Mail (12624) from Ernakulam Town at 19:20, reaching Chennai at 07:45, and 12696 at 21:30, reaching at 10:00. Confirm times and days on the railway enquiry service.
About 700 km via Salem and Palakkad. Only practical for a group, since the drive takes most of a day.
Ask for the code. BOSIET with EBS Digital Delivery is 5703; the classroom course is 5700; the tropical blended course is 5507.
Find out which OPITO option you can meet. If the posting is in the UK, check the UK offshore medical rules first.
Ask our team how access is arranged and how long it stays open. Finish all four modules before you book travel.
Agree the date with our team once the e-learning is done, then book flights or a train.
Keep swimwear, a towel, a retaining strap for spectacles and photo ID with you.
Sit the written assessment, complete the drills and collect the certificate. Set a reminder for the four-year expiry.
