OPITO 5501 for contractors working out of Ras Laffan Industrial City

T-BOSIET Training in Kochi for Ras Laffan Crews Going Offshore

Most of Ras Laffan's workforce stays on land, among LNG trains, a refinery and a port. The smaller group that travels out to the North Field platforms is the one QatarEnergy's own contractor standard has in mind when it names a tropical offshore induction. T-BOSIET (OPITO 5501) takes three days in Kochi at ₹35,000 and stays valid for four years, so the useful question is whether your next job puts you on a platform.

What the contractor standard says, and where Ras Laffan crews actually go

QatarEnergy publishes the standard its contractors work to: CORP-HSE-STD-080, Managing HSE in Contracts. In the revision dated 3 March 2024, the section on contractor personnel at offshore locations says that everyone travelling to work at, or visit, an offshore location must be trained under the company's training standard, CORP-HSE-STD-024, and must hold a valid H2S/BA certificate and a Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (TBOSIET) certificate. The same standard caps continuous stays at 90 days on Halul and 60 days on a production station, with at least seven days of rest onshore. Revisions change, so ask which one your contract cites.

That wording matters at Ras Laffan because the industrial city is the onshore address of an offshore resource. QatarEnergy LNG says its offshore operations lie about 80 km north-east of the mainland, where wellhead platforms feed eight subsea pipelines to shore. North Field Bravo (1996) and RasGas Alfa (1999) each have a living module joined by bridge, and wells are controlled remotely from a control room on Alpha.

The complex built for Ras Laffan LNG trains 1 and 2 shows what a platform stay is made of: about 94 km north-east of Ras Laffan in 230 feet of water, a process platform, a living quarters platform, three wellhead platforms and a riser platform, linked by five bridges. Newer work repeats the pattern on a bigger scale. McDermott lists eight wellhead topsides for North Field East and five for North Field South, with 300 miles of subsea pipeline and 140 miles of subsea cable, under awards made in 2022.

Onshore the scale is easy to state. QatarEnergy LNG operates 14 LNG trains with 77 million tonnes a year of capacity, two condensate refineries and three helium plants. A process operator on one of those trains does not normally need a helicopter escape certificate. T-BOSIET matters at the edges: shutdown technicians, inspectors, marine crew, and anyone whose contract lists offshore locations.

CORP-HSE-STD-080, Rev. 04 (3 March 2024)

Names a valid H2S/BA certificate and TBOSIET for contractor personnel working at or visiting offshore locations.

North Field platforms

Wellhead platforms about 80 km north-east of the mainland, with bridge-linked living modules on the older complexes.

North Field East and South topsides

Eight and five wellhead topsides respectively, with 300 miles of subsea pipeline, according to McDermott.

Offshore supply vessel base

Listed by QatarEnergy among the facilities of Ras Laffan Port, alongside 33 berths and an exports mooring offshore.

Ras Laffan roles that can end up on a platform

Wellhead platform technicians and operators

Maintenance, inspection and shutdown visits are offshore transfers, even where wells are controlled remotely.

Hook-up, commissioning and tie-in crews

New topsides become working platforms only after fitters, electricians and instrument staff finish them offshore.

Marine crew on vessels serving the platforms

Deck hands and engineers share the survival and fire skills of the platform crew they carry.

Onshore LNG technicians sent out for tie-ins

A shutdown can reach from the plant fence to the platform; ask your supervisor early.

Mobilisation coordinators and contractor HSE advisers

They check the certificate matrix before anyone is cleared, so they need to know what each version means.

T-BOSIET, BOSIET or neither: a Ras Laffan checklist

Start with the job, not the course. If your role is on a train, in the refinery or on the quay, ask whether any offshore visit is planned before spending leave on a survival course. If one is, read your contract's clause: QatarEnergy's standard names the tropical induction, which points to T-BOSIET (5501), but the contractor and client decide what counts. If your next posting could be in colder waters, the standard BOSIET with EBS (5700) is the safer certificate to hold. Product 5704, a five-hour OPITO bridging course, exists for valid tropical certificate holders who later need the standard one; ask us whether it can be arranged before assuming you must start again. Finally, the standard asks for an H2S/BA certificate as well, and Basic H2S is a separate half-day course.

Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) →

Your contract or next posting names the standard version, or you may be moved to non-tropical waters.

Basic H2S Training →

Your site asks for H2S/BA as well; confirm with your HSE office whether OPITO 9014 meets its wording.

Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (T-FOET) →

You already hold a T-BOSIET that is nearing OPITO's four-year limit before the refresher; ask us to confirm the entry rules.

Permit to Work PTW System Training →

You receive or issue permits on the onshore side of the same job.

The four modules, read against a platform stay

OPITO's standard allows 19 guided learning hours, with the induction taught entirely as theory and the remaining units split roughly 40:60 between classroom and practical work. Medical fitness comes first: a valid offshore medical certificate, an employer-approved equivalent, a fitness certificate for sea or diving work, or a screening form completed with the centre. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in an indoor pool, and fire fighting on a fire ground.

  1. 01

    Safety induction

Offshore hazards, risk controls, legislation, management systems and the roles on an installation. For a Ras Laffan contractor it is the vocabulary behind a platform permit, a muster call and a toolbox talk.

  2. 02

Helicopter safety and escape (tropical HUET)

Helicopter travel hazards in tropical regions, brace positions and escape from a capsized, submerged helicopter. It is the module for anyone whose transfer to the platform is by air.

  3. 03

    Sea survival and first aid

Tropical sea survival without an immersion suit, lifejackets, life rafts, hyperthermia and basic first aid. In the Gulf the risk you train against is heat, not cold.

  4. 04

    Fire fighting and self-rescue

Fire prevention, portable extinguishers and escape from a smoke-filled space. On an older complex the way out may be a bridge to the next platform.

For Ras Laffan contractors, EPC teams and manning coordinators

Training at Ras Laffan is arranged by contractors who answer to QatarEnergy or its LNG and refining subsidiaries. A mobilisation coordinator usually holds a short list of names, a platform or vessel date and a certificate matrix that must be complete before sign-off. The usual risk is a gap found late, such as a medical not on file or the wrong version.

Standards that shape training in Qatar

QatarEnergy CORP-HSE-STD-080, Rev. 04Managing HSE in Contracts. Its offshore personnel section names H2S/BA and TBOSIET and sets maximum continuous stays and rest periods.
Fitness to workSection 3.18.5 requires compliance with the corporate Fitness to Work standard, CORP-OHH-STD-011, and fitness certificates kept on each worker's file. We have not seen that standard's contents, so ask your occupational health team how it sits beside the OPITO medical rule.
OPITO T-BOSIET (5501)Learners or sponsoring companies must declare known medical conditions, and the centre keeps the declaration.

What employers commonly ask for

CourseRequirement note
Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET)Named in the published contractor standard for personnel working at or visiting offshore locations. The client confirms whether a given certificate meets the wording.
Basic H2S TrainingThe same clause asks for H2S/BA, so many crews book the half-day course on the same trip. Check the wording your site uses.
Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS)Some rotations or clients name the standard version. Ask for the requirement in writing.

Planning a group booking

  • Open a corporate account at portal.imostacademy.in/register; once approved it gives you team logins, contract rates, group booking, invoices and statements, and an expiry tracker for every employee.
  • Build the certificate matrix first: for each name, the offshore medical date, any T-BOSIET or BOSIET expiry and the H2S date. Send it with the sail or flight date and we can suggest how to split batches.
  • Fees are in rupees. Agree the invoice currency and the remittance route from Qatar before the first booking.
  • Purchase orders are welcome. Extended credit is considered only after a credit assessment.

Ras Laffan to Njarakkal: a road leg, a flight and three course days

Ras Laffan is about an hour's drive north of Doha, and a route calculator puts Hamad International Airport at roughly 90 km from the industrial city. Doha to Kochi is listed as a direct route of around four and a half hours. From Cochin International Airport the campus, on Vypin island, is about 40 km by road.

Ras Laffan to the airport

QatarEnergy describes the industrial city as about an hour north of Doha by road, and the national visitor portal gives about 80 km.

Doha (DOH) to Kochi (COK)

Air India Express, IndiGo and Qatar Airways are listed on the route. Kochi is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of Qatar. Timetables change, so check with the airline.

Planning around home leave

Count five to six days door to door: the road to Doha, the flight, three course days and a buffer. Your employer's rota rules apply.

Visa and entry

Indian passport holders can enter India without a visa. Everyone else should confirm the right e-Visa category on the official portal before buying flights.

Costs and payment

Fees are in rupees, per person. Agree the payment route from Qatar, and who bears bank charges, before you transfer anything.

A six-day trip, with the medical checked first

  1. 1

Read the clause and your dates

Find the training clause, the expiry on any current T-BOSIET or BOSIET, and your offshore medical date.

  2. 2

    Choose a week

Tell us which week you can spare, by WhatsApp on +91 8075 787307 or at info@imostacademy.in. Batches run regularly.

  3. 3

    Place it in your leave

With a seven-day minimum rest between offshore stays, a six-day round trip uses most of a short break. Many people use a longer leave block.

  4. 4

    Travel in two stages

Drive to Doha the day before, then fly DOH to COK and rest.

  5. 5

    Days 1 to 3

Induction and fire ground work, sea survival, then helicopter escape and pool exercises. Keep the three days free of other commitments.

  6. 6

    Return and file

Hand the certificate to your contractor's HSE office and diarise the four-year point.
