Training in Kochi for crew and contractors in Doha, Ras Laffan and Mesaieed

Permit to Work and offshore survival courses for Qatar's gas industry

Qatar's energy work is built around gas and LNG, with offshore wells feeding processing plants onshore at Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. For the people who supervise, isolate and sign off that work, Permit to Work is the course Doha asks about most, and the offshore workforce adds BOSIET and T-BOSIET to that. Kochi is a direct flight from Hamad International, so a course can sit inside a trip home.

Plan your visit from Doha

Planning around home leave

Qatar is 2 hours 30 minutes behind India. A three-day course plus travel adds up to five or six days. If a half-day course is all you need, a short stay of two to three days may work, since you can arrive the day before and fly back after.

Visa and entry

Indian passport holders do not need a visa for India. Foreign nationals usually need an e-Visa or a regular visa. The official portal lists short non-structured courses among permitted purposes for the e-Tourist category, but eligibility depends on nationality, so check which e-Visa category applies before applying.

Costs and payment

Fees are quoted in INR per person. Payment from Qatar is normally by international transfer. Confirm the currency and payment method with our team before booking, and check bank charges on your side.

For Qatar HSE managers and training coordinators

Training in Qatar is bought by EPC and maintenance contractors working in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, offshore drilling and marine contractors, industrial service companies, and manning agencies. Buyers are usually working to a QatarEnergy-linked contract, whose HSE terms set the training a contractor must show before mobilising.

Standards that shape training in Qatar

QatarEnergy contractor HSE documentsBidders and contractors are asked to follow the latest versions of Corp-HSE-Std-080 (Managing HSE in Contracts), Corp-HSE-Prc-080 and Corp-Saf-Prc-006.
Contractor HSE management systemQatarEnergy's standard expects each contractor to maintain its own HSE management system that meets or exceeds QatarEnergy's requirements.
Qatar Labour Law and OSH policyLaw No. 14 of 2004 sets employer duties on safe workplaces. A National OSH Policy was published in October 2020 by the labour and public health ministries with ILO support.
OPITO standardsBOSIET, FOET and HUET are OPITO's standard versions; T-BOSIET (5501), T-FOET (5614) and T-HUET (5195) are tropical versions.

Ras Laffan, Mesaieed and the offshore fields

Qatar concentrates its energy industry in three industrial cities that sit about an hour from Doha in different directions. Ras Laffan, around 295 square kilometres, lies to the north and is the onshore base for gas produced offshore in the North Field. Mesaieed, to the south, hosts gas processing, refining, petrochemicals and metals, and receives oil and gas by pipeline from both Ras Laffan and Dukhan. Dukhan, west of Doha, is the onshore concession for crude oil and gas production.

That layout shapes training demand. A large turnaround or construction job at an industrial city runs on permits to work, isolations and gas-test certificates, so contractors there are likely to be asked about Permit to Work first. The sour character of the gas matters too: North Field gas goes through acid gas removal and sulphur recovery at Ras Laffan, and Dukhan produces light sour crude and sour gas, so H2S training is a regular requirement for plant and wellsite crews.

Offshore, QatarEnergy runs oil fields such as Al-Shaheen, now operated by North Oil Company, a joint venture of QatarEnergy (70 per cent) and TotalEnergies (30 per cent). Its next phase includes more than 200 wells, nine remote wellhead platforms and a new central processing complex, with first oil expected in 2027. Halul Island serves as a base for the country's offshore operations. Crews travelling to platforms and the island by helicopter or boat are where BOSIET and T-BOSIET apply.

Ras Laffan Industrial City

About 295 sq km and an hour's drive north of Doha; processes North Field gas and hosts Ras Laffan Port, an LNG export hub.

North Field expansion

Construction began in October 2023 and aims to raise Qatar's LNG capacity from 77.5 to 126 million tonnes a year by 2028.

Mesaieed Industrial City

About an hour south of Doha with gas processing, refining and petrochemicals, fed by pipelines from Ras Laffan and Dukhan.

Al-Shaheen field

Offshore oil field operated by North Oil Company, with a new phase adding wellhead platforms and drilling more than 200 wells.

Halul Island

Offshore island used as a base for QatarEnergy's offshore operations and crude export.

Planning a trip from Qatar

  1. 1

Check the course the contract names

Ask your employer which certificates the contract or QatarEnergy-related prequalification requires, and which OPITO code. The client or operator decides.

  2. 2

Pick a batch within your leave

Permit to Work is a half-day course, while BOSIET and T-BOSIET take three days. Batches run regularly, so check upcoming dates with our team.

  3. 3

    Stack courses into one trip

A half-day Permit to Work and a half-day Basic H2S can be taken around a three-day survival course. Ask our team how to schedule them together.

  4. 4

    Book flights and a stay

Fly DOH to COK and stay near Vypin. Keep your return flexible while the course date is being confirmed.

  5. 5

    Bring the right kit

Swimwear, towel, comfortable clothing and a valid photo ID. Spectacle wearers bring a retaining strap, and medication should be declared.

  6. 6

    File the certificate

Send a copy to your employer and note the expiry: 4 years for OPITO survival courses and 2 years for Basic H2S.
