Training for Bahrain

Offshore and industrial safety courses in Kochi for people working in Bahrain

Bahrain is a small island country, but its refinery, shipyard, port and offshore links to Saudi Arabia employ a wide mix of people, from rig-repair riggers to HSE officers. They tend to ask us for a range of courses, from T-BOSIET and BOSIET to H2S, fire fighting and permit to work. Direct flights to Kochi mean a short course during home leave is easy to fit in.

Planning around home leave

Most people from Bahrain attend during annual leave or between jobs. A one-day course such as FOET or HUET can fit into a short trip, while a three-day BOSIET or T-BOSIET needs a few days with an arrival day and a buffer.

Visa and entry

Indian passport holders do not need a visa for India. Foreign nationals living in Bahrain should check which Indian e-Visa category applies on the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, or ask the Indian Embassy in Manama. Only the visa authority can say which category fits a certified safety course.

Costs and payment

Fees are in Indian rupees, per person. Please confirm the currency and payment method with our team before you pay from Bahrain, and keep the transfer receipt for your records.

For HSE and training managers at Bahrain companies

Buyers in Bahrain include the refinery and upstream companies under Bapco Energies, shipyard and rig-repair teams at ASRY, port and marine operators, and the contractors and manning agencies that supply them. They need to keep crew current for different clients, each with its own induction. A company account on our portal keeps those dates in one place.

Standards that shape training in Bahrain

Bapco Energies group requirementsBapco Energies is the holding company for refining, upstream, gas and ASRY. Contractor HSE requirements are set through the contract, so ask your Bapco contract holder for the current document.
Saudi Aramco as operator of Abu SafahAramco operates the shared offshore field and applies its own contractor safety requirements for work there; confirm with your project team.
ASRY site and client rulesRig and vessel owners using the yard bring their own certificate requirements for crew and contractors on board.
OPITO standardsOPITO defines BOSIET, T-BOSIET, FOET, HUET and related courses and approves the centres that deliver them. Certificates are valid for 4 years.

Getting from Bahrain to Kochi and the Njarakkal campus

Fly from Bahrain International Airport (BAH) to Cochin International Airport (COK). Njarakkal is on Vypin island, roughly 35 to 45 km from the airport by road depending on the route, which is usually 1 to 1.5 hours by taxi.

Bahrain (BAH) to Kochi (COK)

Direct flights are listed with Gulf Air, IndiGo and Air India Express, taking about 4 h 40 min to 4 h 50 min. Schedules change by season, so check the airline's current timetable. Kochi is 2 h 30 min ahead of Bahrain.

Bahrain International Airport

The airport is on Muharraq Island, next to Manama and the city of Muharraq, so most trips from Manama are short. If you are coming from the Saudi side, the King Fahd Causeway is 28 km long.

What drives safety training demand in Bahrain

Bahrain was the first place on the Arabian side of the Gulf where oil was found, and the First Oil Well below Jabal al Dukhan has operated since 1932. The industry is still organised around Bapco Energies, the government holding company whose portfolio includes Bapco Refining, Bapco Upstream, which stewards the Bahrain Field, Bapco Gas, and the shipyard ASRY. The refinery sits at Sitra, on an island south of Manama, and has been in operation since 1936, making it the oldest refinery in the Gulf.

Bapco Energies has been modernising the refinery through the Bahrain Modernization Programme, which it describes as the largest energy investment in the country, with the final capacity of the Sitra refinery announced as 405,000 barrels a day. A project of this size brings in construction, commissioning and turnaround contractors, many of whom need site-induction level fire, first aid, permit to work and H2S training as a baseline.

The offshore link is mainly across the water. Abu Safah is an offshore field in the Gulf shared between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and jointly owned by Saudi Aramco and Bapco, with Aramco as operator. Bahrain has also offered offshore exploration blocks around the main island, though its onshore oil output remains small. Crew who move between Bahrain and the Saudi side, and those at the ASRY yard working on rigs, tend to be asked for offshore survival certificates.

ASRY, founded in 1977 and based at Hidd, repairs and converts ships, rigs and naval vessels, and its facilities include a 500,000 dwt drydock. Jack-up rigs bound for drilling campaigns elsewhere have been upgraded there. People working on rigs at a repair yard are often asked for the same offshore safety certificates as rig crew, even when the rig is alongside. Khalifa Bin Salman Port, also at Hidd and operated by APM Terminals, adds container, ro-ro and general cargo work.

Planning a course around leave from Bahrain

  1. 1

Find out what your contract needs

Ask your employer, manning agent or the client's HSE team which courses are mandatory, and whether they specify BOSIET or T-BOSIET.

  2. 2

    Check your dates

OPITO certificates last 4 years and Basic H2S 2 years. Work back from your current expiry date.

  3. 3

    Agree a batch with us

Batches run regularly. Message +91 8075 787307 on WhatsApp or write to info@imostacademy.in with your leave dates and the courses you need.

  4. 4

    Combine courses

A half-day H2S or Permit to Work course can often be added to a three-day BOSIET or T-BOSIET stay, so one trip covers several requirements.

  5. 5

    Book your flight

Take a direct flight, land the day before, and allow a buffer day before your return.

  6. 6

Send the certificate to your employer

Share a copy with HR or your manning agent and note the renewal date.

Questions from Manama

Is there an OPITO centre in Bahrain, and why would I come to Kochi?⌄

Training providers in the Gulf offer OPITO courses, so compare dates and prices locally first. People choose Kochi when they are going home on leave anyway, when they prefer to pay in INR, or when they want to combine the course with a family trip to Kerala.
