Process, subsea and structural engineers in operator and contractor centres
Site visits to a platform, FPSO or yard are the usual reason for a certificate, and they arrive with little notice.
Two announcements show the kind of work now done in the city. Shell's Technology Centre Bangalore opened on 31 March 2017 on a 52-acre site built for up to 1,500 experts, and it is one of Shell's three main technology hubs worldwide. Its listed expertise includes liquefied natural gas, subsurface modelling and engineering design. In August 2024 Chevron announced its Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center in Bengaluru, a spend of about ₹8,300 crore (roughly $1 billion) over five to six years, with 600 hires planned by the end of 2025 across disciplines that include petroleum engineering and geology. We could not verify comparable announcements from other service companies, so we name only these two.
Neither announcement says that the people in those centres will go offshore, and we do not claim that any company asks its Bengaluru staff for T-BOSIET. The point is narrower. An engineer who models a field or designs a topside will sooner or later be asked to see the real thing, at a fabrication yard, on a platform or on a floating unit. The asset's operator then decides the induction, and for warm-water assets in and around India the tropical certificate is a common answer.
Where the asset sits matters more than where the employer is. For a platform in the North Sea, many operators ask for the standard BOSIET with an emergency breathing system, so a tropical certificate may not be accepted there. For a field in the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea or elsewhere in warm water, T-BOSIET is the tropical equivalent. If you do not yet know the asset, wait for the travel request before you pay for the course.
The last piece is the air link. Air India Express says it operates three daily non-stop flights between Kochi and Bengaluru, and aggregators list more from other carriers, so a three-day course fits around a flight without a long rail journey.
Opened 31 March 2017; 52 acres, room for 1,500 experts, with work in LNG and subsurface modelling.
Announced in August 2024 with a plan to hire 600 professionals by the end of 2025.
Air India Express lists three daily; aggregators put the block time between 1 hour 5 minutes and 1 hour 35 minutes.
Listed daily from Bengaluru at 20:10, arriving at Ernakulam Town at 07:10.
Site visits to a platform, FPSO or yard are the usual reason for a certificate, and they arrive with little notice.
Occasional asset reviews or well-site visits may need the same induction as the crew.
Anyone who inspects an offshore installation is normally inducted to the standard the installation uses.
Commissioning and fault-finding on control systems can mean time on site, often with a deadline.
A first offshore application is easier with the certificate in hand, but check what the employer will accept.
Ask the asset's HSE contact, not the recruiter, which induction their site accepts, and get the answer in writing. Tropical assets accept T-BOSIET far more often than cold-water ones, but some clients still name BOSIET with EBS, which costs the same and takes the same three days. A working engineer who can finish the theory in the evenings may prefer the digital route, which needs one practical day and saves two days of leave. The three-day course suits people who learn better in a room.
The asset is in the North Sea or the operator names BOSIET. Same fee, same length, valid four years.
You can study the theory online and take one practical day in Kochi. Same fee, valid four years.
The asset handles sour gas and you will be on site. Half a day, ₹12,500, valid two years.
In OPITO's definition, T-BOSIET has four mandatory units and 19 guided learning hours. Unit one is classroom theory, and the rest mix theory with practice under continuous assessment. Competence must be shown in every exercise.
Offshore hazards, safety legislation and management systems. For an engineer who has read many HAZOP reports, it shows the same risks from the viewpoint of the person standing on the deck.
In the indoor pool, on a Modular Egress Training Simulator, you rehearse the brace position and the actions that follow, then get out of an inverted, flooded cabin. People who have never trained in water usually find this the hardest part.
Warm-water survival without an immersion suit, using lifejackets and life rafts, along with how heat affects the body and basic first aid. You work as part of a group, which suits a visiting specialist who will join a muster.
You use hand-held extinguishers on the fire ground and find your way out of a smoke-filled space. Office-based staff are the least likely to have done either before.
Buyers here are HSE leads and training coordinators in engineering centres, and the procurement or travel desks that arrange visits to assets. Their problem is the gap between a visit request and a departure date, which is usually a week or two.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly requested for warm-water Indian assets; the operator's matrix decides. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Requested where the asset or contract is outside the tropical region. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) | A way to shorten the time away from desk and project. |
| Basic H2S Training | Often added for sour-gas sites; confirm with the operator. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
Bengaluru is about 360 km from Kochi by air, and Cochin International Airport lies roughly 40 to 45 km from Njarakkal. The rail route is 638 km, served by a Vande Bharat and several overnight trains.
Air India Express says it flies three daily non-stop services, and IndiGo and others also operate the route. The flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Land the evening before day one and check the airline for the current schedule.
Listed daily from Bengaluru at 20:10, arriving at Ernakulam Town at 07:10. It is a cheaper way to arrive on the morning before a late-morning reporting time.
Listed to leave Bengaluru at 16:35 and reach Ernakulam Junction at 04:10, daily. Too early for most people, but workable for a team that wants to be at the campus by breakfast.
Leaves Bengaluru at 05:10 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 13:50, daily except Wednesday. The return, 26652, leaves Ernakulam at 14:20 and reaches Bengaluru at 23:00.
Get the name and code in writing. T-BOSIET and BOSIET are different certificates.
Work out which of OPITO's fitness options you can meet, from an offshore medical to the centre's screening form.
Land in Kochi, take a taxi towards Vypin and stay near the campus. Pack swimwear, a towel, a retaining strap for spectacles and photo ID.
Safety induction, then fire ground, sea survival and helicopter escape in an order set by the instructors. Declare medication and conditions.
Ask for the finish time before booking a flight back. Put the four-year expiry date in your calendar and send a scan to your travel desk.
