Mechanical and rotating-equipment engineers from power and heavy engineering
Turbine, compressor and pump skills transfer to platforms, and the first offshore application normally asks for the induction.
Hyderabad's heavy engineering and science base is public-sector and long established. Wikipedia's account of the city's economy lists HAL, DRDO, BHEL, BEL, ECIL and NMDC among enterprises set up in Hyderabad in the 1950s and 1960s. BHEL's Hyderabad site is described as making turbines, compressors and heavy power equipment, and its corporate research centre there dates from 1977. Rotating equipment and power systems are exactly the skills a process platform runs on, which is one reason engineers from such backgrounds look at offshore work.
A second strand is the earth and ocean sciences. CSIR-NGRI, founded in 1961, lists hydrocarbon and coal exploration among its research areas, and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services at Nizampet issues ocean state forecasts for the Indian Ocean as part of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. These institutions do not send people offshore as a matter of course, but staff and project engineers who join a survey or an offshore campaign can be asked for the same induction as a rig hand.
The basin itself is within reach. Hyderabad to Kakinada is about 463 km by road and 10 to 11 hours by train, so a Telangana engineer can take an interview in Kakinada and be back on the same weekend. ONGC's KG-DWN-98/2 block and Reliance's KG-D6 are among the offshore developments closest to the state. Both are warm-water assets, which is the case for T-BOSIET rather than the standard cold-water BOSIET.
If you are already in Hyderabad and have no offer, the useful step is to read three or four recent postings for the roles you want and see which course names appear. If they say T-BOSIET, or simply offshore survival for Indian waters, this course fits. If they mention international operators, the standard version may be the safer choice.
Makes turbines, compressors and heavy power equipment; its corporate R&D centre was set up there in 1977.
Founded 1961; research areas include hydrocarbon and coal exploration.
Issues ocean state forecasts for the Indian Ocean under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
About 463 km by road; roughly 10 to 11 hours by train. The KG basin's shore base is Kakinada.
At Shamshabad, about 24 km from the city, with direct flights to Cochin.
Turbine, compressor and pump skills transfer to platforms, and the first offshore application normally asks for the induction.
Commissioning and maintenance on process platforms happen on site, not from an office.
Staff attached to a drilling or survey campaign may be flown to a rig or vessel for a short stay.
A certificate on the CV lets a recruiter move you to mobilisation without a training delay.
They inspect and audit installations and are held to the same induction standard as the crew.
Hyderabad's geography makes the choice simple on logistics: there is a direct flight, so the three-day classroom course is not a hardship. The decision is about acceptance. Indian warm-water operators commonly ask for the tropical T-BOSIET, OPITO 5501, at ₹35,000. International operators, some helicopter providers and North Sea work often want the standard BOSIET with EBS, OPITO 5700, at the same fee. If your target list is mixed, ask a recruiter which they see more often, and choose after that. If you are employed and cannot take three days together, the digital version leaves one practical day in Kochi. If you only need helicopter underwater escape, T-HUET is a one-day course at ₹25,000. In every case the operator, not the course provider, decides what it accepts.
Your target employers are international, or posting wording says standard BOSIET or EBS. OPITO 5700, three days, ₹35,000.
You are in a job and cannot be away for three days. Online theory plus one practical day, same fee.
Only helicopter escape is required. One day, ₹25,000, valid four years.
OPITO sets T-BOSIET at 19 guided learning hours. The induction unit is theory, and the others are about 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practical. We run the practical work in an indoor pool with a Modular Egress Training Simulator and on a fire ground, and assessment is continuous against the OPITO standard.
Hazards, regulations, management systems and responsibilities on an installation. For an engineer it explains permits, musters and why site access is controlled.
The brace position, then getting out of a helicopter that has rolled over underwater. If your future work involves a helicopter transfer, this is the unit you are paying for.
Tropical survival techniques without an immersion suit, lifejackets, life rafts, heat effects and basic first aid. Inland engineers should note that you will be in the water.
Hands-on use of portable extinguishers, then a self-rescue through a smoke-filled room.
Hyderabad buyers are less often offshore operators than contractors, engineering offices and project teams that will need people on installations for a defined period. The coordinator typically has a client list, a mobilisation date and a short roster of names.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly asked for warm-water Indian assets. Confirm the code with the client. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Often asked by international operators and some helicopter providers. |
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (Digital Delivery) | Reduces days away from site; confirm the client accepts it. |
| Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) | A one-day option where only helicopter escape is required. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
The direct flight from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to Cochin takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, which makes the three-day classroom course workable for people with jobs. The Sabari Express is the slower and cheaper alternative.
Flights are listed on IndiGo and Air India Express. Shamshabad is about 24 km from the city centre, so leave extra time for the road to the airport. Check the airline for current times.
Listed as leaving Secunderabad at 12:20 and reaching Ernakulam Town at 11:55 the next day, about 23 hours 35 minutes and 1,336 km. Confirm running days before booking.
Ask a recruiter or employer for the course name and code. Check you have a valid photo ID and think about which medical option you will use for the practical exercises.
Ask our team for upcoming dates. The classroom course takes three days; add a day for the flight in and a buffer for the flight home.
Take the direct flight to Cochin, reach the campus area in the evening and sleep near it.
Bring swimwear, a towel, comfortable clothing and spectacle straps if you wear glasses. Declare any medication.
Photograph it, note the four-year expiry and add it to your CV and your recruiter profile.
