BOSIET with EBS for Hyderabad engineers

BOSIET with EBS training in Kochi for Hyderabad engineers on cold-water and international postings

The engineer this page is written for is not heading to an Indian warm-water platform. They have an offer, or a shortlist, from a contractor or operator working in the North Sea or on an international project, and the paperwork says BOSIET with EBS. It explains what the standard version is, how it differs from the tropical course, which questions to settle with the client before paying, and how to fit three days in Kochi around a job in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad has no sea, but it is well placed for overseas offshore jobs

Telangana has no coastline and no offshore industry, so no one in Hyderabad needs this course because of the neighbourhood. They need it because of a contract. Wikipedia's airport page lists nonstop services from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to London Heathrow with British Airways, to Amsterdam with KLM and to Frankfurt with Lufthansa. Those are the gateways to a North Sea industry that recruits internationally. Check current schedules before you plan anything, but the practical point stands: a Hyderabad engineer can reach a European client's office, yard or heliport without a change in India.

Which version you need depends on the asset, not on your home city. Hyderabad's engineering base also serves warm-water clients. In 2018 an Abu Dhabi EPC contractor opened a Hyderabad engineering office to support global energy projects alongside its offices in Abu Dhabi, Mumbai and La Ciotat, according to Gulf News. An engineer on Gulf work for such an office might be asked for the tropical certificate, and for the standard one if a project belongs to a European or other international client. We are not suggesting that every Hyderabad engineer needs offshore training. Hyderabad had about 515 global capability centres in March 2026, according to a FICCI-Anarock report, and most are in technology, finance and life sciences.

The standard course is OPITO 5700, BOSIET with an emergency breathing system (EBS). OPITO sets it at 21 guided learning hours in four mandatory units. The induction unit is all theory, and the others are roughly 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practical. OPITO's own bridging standard for people who already hold the tropical certificate describes the gap as aviation transit suits and EBS for helicopter escape, which is a useful way to picture what separates the two courses.

EBS also has types. OPITO's 5700 is written for a rebreather EBS. OPITO publishes separate standards that use a compressed-air EBS (CA-EBS), and operators choose what their helicopter provider supplies. If the client's paperwork names CA-EBS, tell us before you book so our team can tell you what we offer and what we do not.

Nonstop services to Europe

Wikipedia lists British Airways to London Heathrow, KLM to Amsterdam and Lufthansa to Frankfurt from Hyderabad.

OPITO 5700

21 guided learning hours and four mandatory units; the induction unit is theory and the rest is about 60 per cent practical.

OPITO 5704 bridging standard

Five hours for T-BOSIET holders who need the extra elements, including aviation transit suits and EBS; ask us whether it is on our schedule.

Medical entry options

OPITO accepts an offshore medical, an employer-approved equivalent, a fitness-to-work-at-sea certificate, a diving fitness certificate or a centre screening form.

OEUK offshore medical

UK-sector jobs normally have their own medical, which sits outside this course; recruiters say what they will accept.

Hyderabad engineers who should look at the standard course

Mechanical and rotating-equipment engineers placed with international contractors

A client's site-access rules often list BOSIET before anything else, whatever the engineer's home city.

Instrument, control and commissioning engineers

Commissioning is done on the installation, so a short offshore stay is part of the job, and a helicopter transfer is likely.

Third-party inspection, QA/QC and HSE personnel

They audit what others build, and are expected to hold the same induction as the crews they audit.

Project managers and planners who visit installations

Short visits are still helicopter visits. Many clients treat a visitor like a crew member for survival training.

Holders of a lapsed BOSIET or T-BOSIET who now need the standard version

A refresher needs a valid earlier certificate, so a lapsed one usually means taking the full course again.

Three questions to settle before you book

First, which version does the client name? If it says BOSIET with EBS or OPITO 5700, this is the course. If it says tropical or T-BOSIET, take that instead. Second, which EBS type is mentioned? Ours is the rebreather version. Third, can you take three days at once? If not, the Digital Delivery version moves the theory online and leaves one practical day in Kochi, at the same fee and validity. If you already hold the tropical certificate and the client wants the standard one, OPITO publishes a bridging standard, 5704, and our team can tell you whether it is on our schedule; otherwise the full course is the route. The client, not the training centre, decides what it accepts.

Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) →

The client names the tropical version, which is common for warm-water Indian and Gulf assets. OPITO 5501, three days, ₹35,000.

Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (Digital Delivery) →

You are employed and can spare only one day in Kochi. OPITO 5703: online theory plus one practical day, ₹35,000, valid four years.

Helicopter Underwater Escape Training with EBS (HUET with EBS) →

You already hold the other BOSIET modules and need only helicopter underwater escape. OPITO 5095, one day, ₹25,000.

Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS (FOET with EBS) →

Your BOSIET is still valid and due for renewal. OPITO 5858, one day, ₹25,000.

The five elements, explained for an engineer new to helicopters

Our course is delivered through classroom theory and instructor-led practicals. Helicopter escape and sea survival are practised in an indoor pool using a Modular Egress Training Simulator, and fire exercises run on a dedicated fire ground. OPITO-approved instructors assess continuously against the OPITO standard.

  1. 01

    Safety Induction

How risk is managed offshore, which safety laws apply, what the hazards are and how incidents are reported. It explains why an installation controls who comes aboard.

  2. 02

    Firefighting and Self-Rescue

Handheld extinguishers, smoke-filled environments and self-rescue. Many engineers have used an extinguisher, but few have had to find an exit in thick smoke.

  3. 03

    Sea Survival

Using lifejackets, boarding survival craft and staying safe in the water. Pool work follows a briefing, and you should tell the instructor at the start if you are not a confident swimmer.

  4. 04

HUET Safety and Escape (with EBS)

Helicopter ditching drills, controlled descent and use of the emergency breathing system. This is the element that separates the standard course from a basic fire and first aid certificate.

  5. 05

    Hands-on Pool Drills

Simulated emergencies in aviation suits, lifejackets and the EBS. It ties the earlier units together and is where assessors check that you can repeat the sequence under pressure.

For Hyderabad engineering offices, contractors and manning agents

Hyderabad buyers are usually project offices, inspection firms and recruiters who place engineers with overseas clients. They hold a client's induction list and a mobilisation date, and they need to match each person to the right version before the date arrives.

Planning a group booking

  • Ask each client for the exact certificate name and OPITO number in writing, and send them to us with the names and the mobilisation date.
  • For several people we can plan a group batch. Tell us if any already hold the tropical certificate.
  • A corporate account at portal.imostacademy.in/register stores bookings, GST invoices, certificates and expiry dates for the whole team.
  • Ask your doctor or the client which medical document you will present before the practical exercises, since that is where bookings most often stall.

A four-day plan from Hyderabad

  1. 1

    Confirm the paperwork first

Get the certificate name, OPITO number and EBS type from the client or recruiter, and decide which medical document you will bring.

  2. 2

Pick a batch and apply for leave

Ask our team for dates. Add a travel day at each end of the three course days, and keep a spare day if a visa interview or mobilisation date is close.

  3. 3

    Fly in the evening before

Take the direct flight, check in near the campus and sleep. The pool and helicopter drills are physical, so arrive rested.

  4. 4

    Days one to three

Pack swimwear, a towel, activewear and photo ID. Spectacle wearers need a retaining strap, and any medication must be declared to the instructor.

  5. 5

Fly home and record the expiry

Scan the certificate, send it to the recruiter and diarise the four-year expiry. Book a refresher within the last three months of validity.
