Basic First Aid, for Jamnagar's refinery coast and brass trade

Basic First Aid training in Kochi for Jamnagar refinery contractors, brass workshops and port crews

Jamnagar is two industries in one town: a refinery coast where contractor crews arrive by the thousand for shutdowns, and an old brass trade whose small workshops are cluttered with furnaces and lathes. The people who get hurt in either are rarely near a clinic. Our half-day Basic First Aid course, ₹10,000 per delegate, is taught at Njarakkal in Kochi and ends in an iMost certificate. Kochi is far from Jamnagar, so we say below who should make the trip.

A very large site, a very hot town

Reliance Industries' refinery at Motikhavdi began operating on 14 July 1999 and stands on more than 7,500 acres, as of 2013, within a special economic zone, with a township of 415 acres. A site of that size has its own medical arrangements, but it also has its own distances. A contractor's rigger, scaffolder or welder who is hurt at one end of a unit may be a long walk or drive from the nearest gate, and the person beside them in the first few minutes is another contractor. That is the situation Basic First Aid is built for.

The refinery is not the only large employer on this coast. Nayara Energy's refinery at Vadinar, in Devbhumi Dwarka district, began operating in 2006, is rated at 405,000 barrels a day, about 20 million tonnes a year, and is listed with about 1,600 employees. Bedi, an all-weather intermediate port inland on the Rangamati River, and Rozi on the Gulf of Kutch add port and marine work. Hot work, scaffolding, crane lifts and long shifts are common to every one of these sites, which is why contractors who supply gangs for them often ask about first aid.

Then there is the town itself. Wikipedia credits Jamnagar with more than 5,000 large and 10,000 small brass workshops, making it India's largest producer of brass items. Brass means furnaces, pouring, grinding and polishing, in small premises where there may be no first-aid box at all. The climate adds to the problem: the highest recorded temperature is 47 °C, on 5 May 1990, and annual rainfall is only about 500 mm. Heat illness in a closed workshop or on an open steel deck is a real event, not a theoretical one.

For serious cases, Jamnagar's main government hospital is the Guru Gobind Singh hospital, part of the complex linked to M. P. Shah Medical College. The hospital opened in 1927 and has been listed as the second-largest hospital complex in Gujarat. Even so, the minutes before an ambulance arrives belong to the crew. Operator rules, not this page, decide what first aid evidence a contractor must hold at the gate; our course is an iMost certificate and we do not claim that any operator accepts it.

Jamnagar refinery, Motikhavdi

Began operating 14 July 1999; over 7,500 acres in 2013, in a special economic zone, with a 415-acre township.

Who in Jamnagar should be on the course

Contractor supervisors and gang leaders on refinery and terminal jobs

They manage crews for shutdowns and tie-ins. The first response to a burn, a fall from scaffold or a heat collapse falls to them.

Scaffolders, riggers and welders who may be asked to act as buddies

Working in pairs on tall structures means the partner is the first aider. A short course gives both of them the same drill.

Foremen at brass foundries, polishing and casting workshops

Molten metal, grinders and lathes cause burns, eye injuries and cuts. A foreman who can cool a burn and control bleeding helps right away.

Marine and port-side staff at Vadinar, Bedi and Rozi

Mooring, lifting and night work on open quays. Help is often a vehicle ride away.

Transport, security and canteen staff on large estates

They see collapses and road incidents. A trained driver can stabilise a casualty while the right vehicle is found.

Labour-supply and manning agencies placing workers on site

Individual certificates show that every member of the gang has had the same basic training, whatever the site induction adds on top.

First aid, or the safety course that fits the hazard

Refinery coast work usually needs several certificates, and first aid is rarely the first. A site's induction, permit-to-work training and gas awareness often come before it. Choose Basic First Aid for general readiness of the gang, and the others when the contractor's list names them. If you are travelling 2,030 km, it makes sense to bundle two half-day courses on adjacent days rather than make the trip for one.

Basic H2S Training →

Crews working on sour streams or near sulphur plants; a half-day OPITO 9014 course at ₹12,500, valid for two years.

Fire Watch Training →

Hot-work crews who must stand watch during welding and cutting in shutdown windows.

Permit to Work PTW System Training →

Supervisors who raise or receive work permits, which is a different skill from treating a casualty.

Hazardous Materials HAZMAT Training →

Stores and tank-farm staff who handle drums, cylinders and chemicals, and need spill response skills.

The seven modules, read for a refinery gang or a brass shop

The half day is classroom teaching with demonstrations, case studies and scenario work, ending in a written test, a practical demonstration and oral questions. Here is how each module reads against Jamnagar's two kinds of workplace.

  1. 01

    Introduction to first aid

Aims, importance and legal considerations. We make clear that this is a trained colleague's first response, not a site clinic or a recognised factory first-aider course.

  2. 02

Basic Life Support (CPR, AED, recovery position)

Hands-on CPR and AED practice. On a big site the key drill is raising the alarm clearly, stating where you are, and sending someone to meet the ambulance at the gate.

  3. 03

    Managing common injuries

Wounds, burns, fractures and sprains. Refinery groups work on falls from scaffold, hand injuries and burns from hot surfaces; brass groups on molten metal splashes and grinder cuts.

  4. 04

    Medical emergencies

Choking, heart attack, stroke and seizures, including how to give a controller a clear message when a casualty is far from the gate.

  5. 05

    Environmental emergencies

Heat illness is the practical case in a town that has reached 47 °C. We also cover poisoning, hypothermia and frostbite for completeness.

  6. 06

    Special considerations

Children, older people and mental health crises, since workers' families live on township sites and visitors come to workshops.

  7. 07

    Practical scenarios

Role-play and simulation. Bring a scenario from your own site, such as a collapse during hot work or a splash in a polishing shop.

For Jamnagar contractors, workshops and manning agencies

Buyers here are contractor safety officers and HR leads, brass workshop owners, port-service firms and labour-supply agencies. They tend to mobilise people in gangs, which suits a group booking for a long trip.

Standards that shape training in Gujarat

Operator contractor-safety rulesRefinery and port operators set their own induction and first-aid expectations for contractors. The contract and the site safety office decide, so ask them before booking.
Section 45 of the Factories Act, 1948Factories keep first-aid boxes in the charge of a person holding a certificate recognised by the State Government. Our certificate is not that.
Gujarat Factories Rules, 1963, Rule 70-AA notice must name the trained first-aid persons, say where they work, and give the nearest hospital and its number.

What employers commonly ask for

CourseRequirement note
Basic First Aid TrainingGeneral readiness for gang leaders, drivers and workshop foremen. It does not replace site induction or a recognised first-aider certificate.
Basic H2S TrainingRequested by some refinery and gas-processing contractors; the site's own list says so.
Fire Watch TrainingHot-work crews often hold it alongside first aid. An iMost certificate; confirm what the permit issuer accepts.

Planning a group booking

  • Send a gang of six to twelve with their supervisor so the journey pays for itself. Tell us the trades and we will set scenarios to match.
  • If your people are on a short break between shutdowns, ask our team about adjacent-day batches so they can sit two courses on one trip.
  • Portal accounts at portal.imostacademy.in/register hold group bookings, GST invoices and certificate dates in one place.
  • A manning agency should confirm with its principal what first aid evidence is needed before paying for a long trip.

Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.

Jamnagar to Njarakkal, the practical routes

Rome2Rio lists the road distance at about 2,033 km and the straight-line distance at about 1,563 km. Flying with a connection takes roughly seven hours, so most groups lose two days to travel for a half-day class. Plan the trip around more than one course if you can.

Fly via Mumbai

Jamnagar's airport sits within an air force enclave and, per Wikipedia, has a daily direct flight to Mumbai plus a few weekly services to Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Onward flights reach Cochin, about seven hours in all on a typical itinerary. Check the airline for your date.

Okha-Ernakulam Express 16337

A third-party timetable lists departure from Jamnagar at 09:16 and arrival at Ernakulam Junction at 02:50 two days later. Journey planners quote 37 to 41 hours depending on the source. Confirm running days on IRCTC and arrange rest on arrival.

Vehicle convoy

About 2,030 km. Only sensible when you are moving plant or vehicles for other reasons, and not for a half-day class.
