Commissioning and start-up engineers
They go where the plant is, and a hook-up or start-up on a platform is a week-long stay that requires the induction.
Vadodara's strength is design and delivery. Engineers India Limited, a company that lists offshore oil and gas as one of its business areas, has a regional office in the city. Linde Engineering India and a cluster of petrochemical and power-equipment firms operate in or near it, and L&T's Knowledge City houses engineering businesses of that group. ONGC and GAIL units are also listed among Vadodara's public-sector employers. Nobody in these offices spends a career on a rig, but the design package, the procurement list and the site-visit calendar all eventually point toward a fabrication yard, a gas complex, or a platform.
That makes the offshore induction a lumpy, occasional need. A piping engineer is asked to witness a hook-up. A commissioning lead is deployed with a vendor for a start-up. An inspector, an HSE auditor or a planner is asked to attend a revamp. The employer's mobilisation office then asks for a certificate name, and the name is often T-BOSIET for warm-water fields. OPITO describes the course as aimed at personnel who are new or returning to offshore oil and gas in a tropical environment, with four mandatory units and 19 guided learning hours.
The geography adds a twist. Vadodara is well placed for the onshore end of the western offshore business: ONGC's Hazira gas processing complex, which receives gas from Mumbai High, is about 165 km south by road, and Dahej, with its LNG terminal and petrochemical complex, is about 105 km away. Engineers on those projects often start in Vadodara and finish at a site, then discover that a visit to the platform side needs a certificate the onshore job never did. Our hub page for Gujarat explains the plant-side courses; this page is about the induction they lead to.
One more practical point. Vadodara has no direct Kochi flight on the lists we checked, so the journey needs a plan. Vadodara airport lists flights to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune, and Cochin International lists Ahmedabad on IndiGo. A three-day course, plus travel, is a week in the diary, so the choice between the tropical and standard version should be made before the ticket is bought.

The tropical induction standard: 19 guided hours, mostly practical once the opening theory unit is done.
They go where the plant is, and a hook-up or start-up on a platform is a week-long stay that requires the induction.
A design review is occasionally held on site. Having the certificate before the request saves a last-minute rush.
Inspection engineers travel to fabrication yards and platforms. Their calendar is set by contractor milestones, not by their own.
They review work rather than carry it out, but they still ride the same helicopter and use the same lifeboat drill.
A fresh joiner is easier to deploy once the first induction is behind them. Four-year validity covers a long learning curve.
Both courses cost ₹35,000 and last three days, so the fee does not decide it. The client's wording does. T-BOSIET is built for warm-water regions. BOSIET with EBS is the standard version with an emergency breathing system, and it is the one often named by international and North Sea operators. If you may later be deployed to a standard-version client, note that OPITO's five-hour tropical-to-standard bridging course exists, but the centres it listed when we checked were in Abu Dhabi and Nigeria, not India. For an engineer who might be deployed anywhere, ask the mobilisation office for the certificate list of the next two likely clients before you choose.
The client or the offshore field is outside the tropical region, or the contract names the standard version. OPITO 5700, three days, ₹35,000.
You already hold sea survival and fire training and the client asks only for helicopter escape. OPITO 5195, one day, ₹25,000.
Your T-BOSIET is still valid and its four years are nearly up, so you need the refresher, not a repeat. OPITO 5614, one day, ₹25,000.
The site handles hydrogen sulphide; this is a separate half-day. OPITO 9014, ₹12,500, valid two years.
Each unit is part classroom, part drill. A Modular Egress Training Simulator in the indoor pool is used for helicopter escape and sea survival, and a fire ground for fire-fighting and smoke escape. Instructors assess you exercise by exercise against the OPITO standard.
The hazards of offshore oil and gas, the legislation and management systems, and who does what on an installation. OPITO makes this unit theory only, and for an engineer it explains the permit and muster logic behind the operator's procedures.
Brace positions, how tropical helicopter travel differs, and getting out of a capsized, submerged helicopter. First-timers worry about this unit, and it matters most if your site visit is by air.
Survival in warm water without an immersion suit, lifejackets, rafts, the overheating risk and basic first aid. Engineers learn to help others as well as themselves.
Preventing fires, handling portable extinguishers and escaping smoke. Anyone who has reviewed a fire and gas drawing will recognise what it was protecting.
Buyers in Vadodara include HR and mobilisation teams at EPC contractors, HSE managers at engineering consultancies, and project directors who staff offshore packages. They tend to buy one induction at a time rather than a batch, which suits a three-day course held regularly.
| Course | Requirement note |
|---|---|
| Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (T-BOSIET) | Commonly named for offshore work in warm-water regions. The contract decides. |
| Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with EBS (BOSIET with EBS) | Often requested by clients whose fields lie outside the tropics; ask which version your next two clients expect. |
| Basic H2S Training | Paired with the induction for staff visiting sour-gas facilities. |
Operators and clients set their own requirements; confirm with your contract or HSE department.
No Kochi flight appears from Vadodara airport, and the rail option takes more than a day each way. The two realistic routes are a connection through another city, or a drive to Ahmedabad for a nonstop flight.
Vadodara airport lists flights to all four on IndiGo or Air India, and Cochin lists flights from each. A connection adds time but avoids the road transfer; check minimum connection times.
Ahmedabad airport is about 112 km from Vadodara by road, and Cochin International lists Ahmedabad on IndiGo. Leave early enough for the airport transfer.
A third-party timetable lists Vadodara at 17:22 and Ernakulam Junction at 02:50 on the third day, about 44 hours. It suits only a very flexible schedule.
Ask the mobilisation office for the exact course name and whether a tropical certificate is enough for the next two projects.
Choose which of the accepted routes you will use, and book it early so the paperwork is ready.
Send your name, home city and project to info@imostacademy.in or +91 8075 787307 on WhatsApp, and ask which batch fits. Compare the Ahmedabad route with a connection.
Induction in the classroom, helicopter escape and sea survival in the pool, fire-fighting on the fire ground, with assessment all the way through. Our team confirms the day-by-day timetable at booking.
Record the expiry. If you will need the refresher, T-FOET must be done before the four years run out.
